Horse Owners Urged To Start Season Slowly Too often novice horse owners rush to the stables on the first sunny spring weekend to ride their horses - and ride and ride and ride. On Monday, the horse is extremely sore or worse, permanently lame or dead. After a relatively inactive winter, few horses are capable of long spring jaunts, says Cheryl Knobloch, University of Illinois Extension equine veterinarian. Horse owners should follow both a regular winter exercise program and a spring con ditioning and checkup program. All boarded horses (excluding lame or sick animals) should be exercised for at least an hour each day of the year. If pasture is available, allow animals access to develop and maintain strong, sound feet and legs-without costly supervision and training, Ms. Knobloch adds. Preconditioning programs provide a gradual work load increase to rebuild muscle strength and stamina. It takes about six weeks to two months before a horse is properly conditioned for a heavy work load. But remember, as work load increases, increase the feeding rate accordingly, says the expert. She suggests the following feeding guidelines for mature (900-1400 pounds) pleasure horses: Idle, lVfe to l3/4 pounds of hay-cwt.; light use, 2-5 to xk pound of grain plus IV4 to lVfe pounds of hay-cst.; moderate Internship For Susan Blenner Susan Blenner, a graduate student in nutrition and food science at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, has received an internship for further work and study at St. Luke's hospital in Chicago. He was taken to McHenry hospital where he was treated and released. , use, % to 1 pound of grain plus IV4 to 2 pounds hay-cwt.; hard use, IV4 to 1-one-third pounds grain and 1 to lVt pounds hay- cwt. Start any spring conditioning program with a pyysical check up. Teeth, feet and leg in spection, as well as a check for internal parasitae, should be a part of this cheek-up. Check for decayed, broken or malformed teeth. Older animals are particulary susceptible to teeth problems. And floating or filing the teeth will eliminate sharp edges that develop with wear. A thorough feet and leg examination is essential. Leg problems can delay con ditioning and lameness can ruin an otherwise good animal. Trim the feet carefully every four to six weeks, says Ms. Knobloch. Worming is also essential for maintaining good health. A minimum worming program consists of three treatments- during the spring, fall, and mid winter. For Illinois horses, a treatment every two months is preferred.
