Shay, director, McHenry County Civil Defense, announced the graduation of twelve volunteers of the Civil Defense Auxiliary Police course. It was conducted under the authority of McHenry County Sheriff Arthur Tyrrell, and with the direct supervision of Captain Robert Crabtree. The Auxiliary police received instruction in Traffic and Crowd Control, Protection of Property, Communications, Radiation Hazards, Press Relations, Criminal Law, County Geography, and Tornado Spotting. The 20-hour course was taught over a five- week period. The Auxiliary police are always under the direct control of the chief law enforcement officer of the jurisdiction where they are called. They have been trained primarily to assist the police in disasters. However, they will be used in other emergencies or wherever needed. They volunteer their time, and buy their own uniforms and equipment. This brings the personnel complement to thirty-eight. In the past, the volunteers have assisted the McHenry county Sheriff's department, and the Algonquin and the McHenry Police departments for various civic events including the McHenry County Fair, McHenry VFW and American Legion carnivals, Algonquin Founder's day, and the Wonder Lake Ski show. The par ticipation at these events enable the volunteers to obtain actual field training. Anyone interested in ob taining additional information may contact the McHenry County Civil Defense office in Woodstock. In session last week, the McHenry County board passed an ordinance to adopt the policy that the basis for the appraisal value of livestock or poultry killed or injured in the county by dogs will reflect the reasonable market value of the livestock or poultry at the time losses were sustained. Maximum amounts were listed as follows: Cattle, $250 per head; horses, $175; goats, $25; turkeys, $5; swine, $40; sheep, $30; geese, $5, and other poultry and commercial rabbits, $2.50. An increase of 50 per cent is allowed for animals for which a certificate of registry can be presented. A report of the County Liquor and License committee was distributed. This includes the granting of fifty-six Class A licenses, fifty-five Class AA licenses, two Class B licenses, five Class BB licenses, one Class A-Aux license and one Class AA-Aux license for a tot&l' fee of $97,180. Homemaker Aspaidgus, which is the fifth most popular vegetable in the United States, is a member of the lily-of-the-valley family. The name comes from a Greek word meaning "stalk" or "shoot". It probably was a native to the eastern Mediterranean lands and Asia Minor where it still grows wild. Thomas Jefferson grew asparagus in his greenhouses at Monticello. Not all asparagus is green. In some areas blanched or white varieties, which are somewhat milder, are popular. Asparagus is good hot, cold, lukewarm, pickled, in sauces, aspics, or with salad dressing. Asparagus has a tender stalk that punc tures easily. The best quality tips should be tightly closed. Spreading tips indicate over maturity, This vegetable is sold your week ahead BY DR A W DAMIS ARIES Mar. 21-Apr. 19 TAURUS Apr. 20-M ay 20 GEMINI May 21-June 20 MOONCHILD June 21-July22 LEO July 23-Aug. 22 VIRGO Aug. 23-Sept. 22 LIBRA Sept. 23-Oct. 22 SCORPIO Oct. 23-Nov. 21 SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22-Dec. 21 CAPRICORN Dec. 22-Jan. 19 AQUARIUS Jan. 20-Feb. 18 PISCES Feb. 19-Mar. 20 Forecast Period: May 25 to May 31 Your emotional reaction to a romantic situation should be highly favorable. You might be forced to put a few bad habits under control. However affairs of the heart, look good! It's possible that you'll exchange a few secrets. Be certain that what you hear isn't meant to manipulate you to fit into someone else's scheme of things Avoid poor communications with a member of the opposite sex. On the brighter side9 A long term sacrifice will begin to pay off, this week Most members of your sign will be "pinch hit ting," this week. In other words, it's highly S>robable that you'll be involved with an un-amiliar task. You will have to step out of character for a few days. Stellar patterns advise that you placate... settle for half instead of the whole It's during this cosmic cycle that smoldering animosity could break into open warfare So, curb the urge to provoke a routine associate; pamper the opposite sex. It's soft lights and sweet music, for most unat tached members of your sign Obviously, things should go well in affairs of the heart Look for an across the board improvement! Someone in authority will give you good advice. Also, take that sword out of your belt getting along with your associates is very important, now! This week, boredom might hit you as a fist It seems as though you'll undergo a period of much, much too much, self criticism It'll all pass! Listen, closely, to your mate or similar alliance According to prevailing stellar patterns, you'll receive excellent financial advice One more thing, nostalgia's in the air An associate, so it seems, will point out one of your bad habits. As the old saying goes A hint to the wise is sufficient One or more of your suggestions will be criticized It would be a good idea to keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself, at least, this week. mainly by weight in tied bunches usually 2'/2 pounds. One pound is equal to 16-20 stalks. In storing asparagus, do not wash before storage. Cook as soon as possible. Fresh asparagus will keep 4 days in the refrigerator. Frozen asparagus will keep 1 year in the freezer. The food value obtained is good for Vitamin A, fair for Vitamin B and C and iron. Dieters will like its Vk oz. at 21 calories served without benefit of sauce, butter, etc. The asparagus season is nearing its peak. So now is the time to freeze this tender spring delicacy for your family's enjoyment all year. The commercial season for asparagus starts in February, and reaches its peak in May. Nancy Moore, McHenry County Home Economics adviser, University of Illinois Extension Service, offers these tips for freezing asparagus ; -Select young, tender stalks with compact tips. Sort ac-i cording to the thickness of the stalk. One crate, or twelve two- pound bunches, will yield 15 to 22 pints frozen asparagus. A 1 to l'/z pound bunch will yield one pint, Mrs. Moore con cludes. For And About Teenagers KNOW HOW THIS WEEK'S LETTER: I'm writing to ask wha^ to do when you're 17, pregnant, in love, but unwed. I'm engaged to a very nice guy who is the father of the child I'm carrying I have one big problem. I don't know how to tell him I'm pregnant I'm afraid of losing him. I want the child and I'm afraid he'll want me to have an abortion. I don't believe in abortion. That's killing a helpless person. What do you think I should do? OUR REPLY: It sounds as if you've already made up your mind. If you don't believe in abor tion, don't have one. Have your child. The only way you can find out how the father feels is to com municate to him that you're preg nant. He has a right to know so don't keep it from him. He also has a right to his own views on the issue of abortion. Until you're cer tain what those views are don't assume anything. Once you've found out then the two of you can share the responsibility of making the decision that works. tecavM of tK« volume of to Hill column, r*qu*»t« fof p«f»oool ropliot cannol bo accommodated Editorial ponol Mlocti for woofcly v», lottor which b»*t ropmonti question! and/or commenti from reoderv FOR AND ABOUT TEENAGERS. IN V 0 i CHECKBOOK BALANCE Here are some helpful hints in the art of keeping an accurate record of your checking account: --Bank officials report that the most common checking error is faulty addition. This is usually simple carelessness or lack of at tention paid to the numbers --Neglect in entering a check is another common mistake This blank can cause financial chaos for the family when it comes time to balance the checkbook and there is no evidence of how much was expended on the missing check. --Entering a deposit more than once and on separate pages often occurs. --It is imperative that the stub be filled out before the check is written. --Write in the date, payee, amount, and even a little bit of in cidental information about the nature of the purchase Then im mediately deduct the amount from the previous balancce --Postponing the deduction of the amount of each check from the checkbook balance is the first step to an overdrawn checking ac count --Some banks charge for each check written. These charges should be deducted when Writing a check so that the balance is always kept up to date. --One good habit is to double- check each calculation as soon as you have finished with that par ticular check. --Bookkeeping chores can be handled alternately by husband and wife NOW F0RTHE/T7\ Lwj GOOD WNEWS THE LOS ANGELES VOLUNTARY ACTION CENTER MATCHES PEOPLE TO THE NEEDS OF 1,200 VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE LOS ANGELES AREA. a********************** 19 Belief 30 Dawdle 20 Trademark 32 Sault -- for Marie Bella 33 French Abzug article 22 Skylark's 34 Unruly tribute child 24 Showed 35 Affirmative contempt vote 25 Gardner 30 Fall 17 Mohammedan 27 Capable into sin saint of (suff.) 37 Stay at 18 Jellied 29 Epithet anchor dish for Durocher 38 Sea (Fr.) mmmw ^H§ ww/. i/'. ]> J • 1 • I- 1 > 1- l> , l> !• I ]> I J V Are You Mew In McHenry Area ? •••••••••• Do You Know Someone new?
