Kids can work out a way to earn some pocket money Summer vacation is the perfect time for kids to earn a little extra pocket money of their own. One effective way for your child to find odd jobs this year is to spread the word that there's a "kid for hire." Since many of your neigh bors undoubtedly have things that need doing, don't be surprised if this word-of-mouth search quickly grows into a lucra tive part-time business. A talent for fixing things can often attract numer ous customers who need anything from broken clocks, to bicycles, to back yard swings • repaired, or leaky houses patched. Or perhaps your youngster's talent lies in fixing worn or rusty lawn furniture which could be put to good use with the onset of warm weather. Other handy jobs include mowing lawns, of course, as well as washing cars and cleaning yards. Another way your child can earn pocket money is to take advantage of his love for animals and offer to walk your neighbors' dogs for a fee. Who knows, they might even ask him to "dog sit" when they go on vacation! For the younger child who may not have devel oped many sophisticated skills as of yet, a lemon ade stand can be a profit able venture that will bring old-fashioned pleas ure to your neighbors. For some modern tricks, use instant lemonade and serve it up in Dixie's new five-ounce kitchen refill cups in the beautiful bird design. An eye-catching A LEMONADE STAND can be a profitable summertime venture for young children. To avoid breakage and clean-up problt .ii», supply your child with Dixie's five-ounce cups in the beautiful new bird design. Good guys- tops with the pops! The list of famous Americans honored by the National Father's Day Committee since the first Awards Luncheon 40 years ago is a profile of the great men of our era, whose per sonalities and characters have shaped present day life styles. They include Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Ken nedy, Ford; Generals Mac- Arthur, Mark Clark, Alfred E. Greunther; Senators McClelland, Javits, Jack son, Percy, Robert Ken nedy; Supreme Court Jus tices William O. Douglas and Arthur Goldberg; be loved Bob Hope; Bing Crosby, Paul Douglas, Cab Calloway, Joel Gray, Irv ing Berlin, Burt Bacha- rach, Ed Sullivan, Dom DeLuise, Sid Caesar, Eddie Cantor, Arthur Godfrey; Sportsmen Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Fran Tarkenton, Jack Nicklaus, Roger Staubach, Bob Greise and Tom Seaver. Silence is deep as eternity, speech is shallow as time. Reep your mouth shut and your eyes open. A . element of your child's home-made "stand," Dixie cups also make the after math of an afternoon's business -- the cleaning up -- easier for you. Some of your neighbors might be looking for a "house sitter" -- someone to collect the mail, water the plants, feed the pets and turn on the lights at sundown -- while they are away. A responsible teen ager who is available for such a project can attract many customers who will gladly pay a small fee to insure that their house is secure until they return. Any way your child earns his pocket money this summer can teach him many positive things, including responsibility and ingenuity. But per haps the. most rewarding feeling your child can come away with is the sense of self-accomplish ment achieved by being paid for a job well done. FLYING HIGH Just for fun ... go fly a kite. The combined effects of the ecology craze, the nostalgia trend and the energy crisis have con tributed to the growing popularity of flying kites. Standard paper and wood construction kites cost un der 40 cents, while more elaborate models sell for up to two dollars. Or make one yourself. Bring summer indoors with bright furnishings You don't need a patio to have a summer room full of the freshness and fun of outdoors. Colorful, casual furnishings that won't strain the budget can achieve a summer time setting indoors. Designers from Babcock Phillips, makers of low- profile, modular furniture, selected a series of pieces in easy-care denim vinyl and patchwork fabric to fashion a space-wise, ver satile room as comfortable as a pair of blue jeans. To cope with TV-watch ing or after-beach parties, the grouping includes loose-cushion modular chair units, a crash pad, stack pillows, a bean bag chair, cocktail table-bench and a bar-stoo) unit. A loveseat was made by linking two loose-cushion chair units at their base. The ultimate in versatil ity, each chair is composed of seating cube and back cushion in a chrome-fin ished frame: The cushion parts slip out of their frame, to be used sepa rately when extra seating is needed. Another feature denot ing the at-ease style of the room, a crash pad, was propped against a wall as a cozy cushion for loung ing, or a bed for an unex pected, overnight guest. Completing the setting were denim bean bag chair, red vinyl stacking pillows, a bar and a den- im-covered, low-profile table that brings dining or game-playing down to earth. Two seating cubes, mounted on casters, nestle underneath or roll out for seating. EARNS DEGREE John C. Brda was among more than 4,800 students at the University of south Florida who received their diplomas during commencement exercises at St. Petersburg's Bayfront center Sunday, June 15. We have known the bit terness of defeat and the exultation of triumph, and from both we have learned there can be no turning back. We must go forward to preserve in peace what we won in war. Gen.
