The economy in backpacking is due to the fact that you take along only the necessities to keep your load as light as possible. The challenge is in knowing that you are your transporta- low a trail where no ve- tion . . . and your legs will take you wherever you go. But there is more to backpacking than "'just strapping on your pack and taking off. Packing » can be tiring, both phys ically and mentally. A novice could get into real trouble in the back coun try without the proper equipment, clothing and preliminary kliow-how. Choosing equipment Choosing the proper backpack can be confusing since there are many types on the market. Generally, the longer your trip, the larger the pack you will need. The stove comes packed inside its own pots -- there are two, a stew pot and a fry pan with a detachable handle to fit both. Consider clothing The backpacker's cloth ing is important, especial ly his shoes. When on the trail, your shoes must be sturdy and comfortable for obvious reasons. The best way to buy a pair of shoes for backpacking is to go to a camping supply store or a sporting goods store and be fitted for them. Thick socks are a must, as well as a comfortable hat which will protect you from sunburn, insect bites and rain. The rest of your outfit depends on weather conditions, but long blue jeans are a safe choice all year round. A wool shirt or jacket is good for cold weather or cool summer nights on the trail. Some type of T-shirt should be worn for extra warmth in winter or by itself on hot summer days. Tools are an important part of your equipment. Exactly what you include depends onr%here you are going and for how long, but it never hurts to in clude a small axe for cutting and chopping, and a compass .. . just in case.
