On July 11, President Gerald Ford was present to serve as parade marshal of the Cherry Royale parade, and the Tigers were invited to join with three bands from the President's home state to form his court of honor. The previous evening the Tigers, led by Band Director William Laskey, had received fourth place honors among eleven bands competing in the Cherryland Band Classic field competition, and as a result received the unexpected in­ vitation and a chance to move up from 157th place in the parade line-up to near the front where the court of honor was placed. The Dundee Scots, last year's field competition win­ ners, led the parade and the Traverse City high school band marched on either side of the President.
