Church Serves Lakemoor SCHMITT CHAPEL Chapel Hill Road McHenry vow he had made during a terrible storm on the ocean. The first chapel was built of logs and was used for almost ten years. In 1853, a larger chapel, 16x22 feet, was built of bricks. It was enlarged in 1878 to a 16 x 28 foot building. The chapel was used by the people of the community as a pilgrimage placfe, where they would go in groups to pray for good crops, favorable weather conditions and for the sick and needy.• The Rev. Father Plathe of fered the first Mass in this chapel, which is still standing Chapel Is The small white chapel at the corner of Wilmot and Ringwood roads north of Johnsburg is Landmark known as the Miller chapel. It is a landmark in the area. In 1863, Peter Miller died leaving his wife, Mary, to raise six children. One summer as Mary Miller, with the help of her oldest children, was cutting weeds with a scythe, she asked the help of the Blessed Mother to guide her in raising her children. In Thanksgiving, she would build a chapel. The promise was fulfilled when her oldest son, John M. (Continued on page 11)) The little white chapel located on Chapel Hill road, about a mile south of John sburg, \fcas first build in 1843 by Fred Schmitt. It was built the ~ $ear after Schmitt and a group of settlers arrived in Johnsburg from Germany. He constructed the chapel in fulfillment of a today. It is in good condition and still used for private devotions. Wonder Lake Road Wonder Lake Christ The King Starts As Mission Christ the King parish. Wonder Lake, was started as a mission from St. Mary's church in McHenry in the year 1945. The first Mass was. offered in what is now Harrisdn school. Later, the center of Christ the King church's activity was changed to the basement of a small building, which is now occupied by the American Legion, at 4117 E. Wonder Lake road. The first resident pastor was Father James A. Vanderpool. Father Vanderpool began his pastorate in 1949. The people of Wonder Lake acquired the land on which the church now stands in 1955. The structure which is now known as Christ the King church was dedicated in 1958 with Father Vanderpool still residing as pastor. Father Vanderpool remained pastor until 1965 when he was replaced by Father Parker, who remained pastor until 1969. The present pastor who took over from Father Parker is Father Dorrance E. Tranel. Many changes have been made even since the new modern church was dedicated. With Vatican II, altars were turned to face the people, Communion rails were removed and Communion tables were erected, lector stands were set up. The most recent news from the parish is that two new sections were opened in the cemetery. 1843 Chapel Fulfills Vow MILLER CHAPEL Wilmot Road Pistakee Highlands At the corner of Sunnyside and Willow roads in Lakemoor stands the United Pentecostal church, for which the Rev. Curtis Pierce is pastor. Prior to the opening of the church early last Fall, services f were held temporarily in the home of the members, including an evangelistic service, and a youth-oriented rite. The Rev. Pierce, his wife and three children live in Hoffman Estates. He has been in the ministry for twenty-three years. He graduated from the Apostolic Bible institute of St. Paul, Minn., and was affiliated with the United Pentecostal church in Columbia Mo., for seven years. He was associate pastor of Grace Tabernacle church of Chicago. The Rev. Pierce has been pastor in Lakemoor for the past three years. St. John The Baptist Imposing Local Church A small group of men left their homelands in Germany to come to a land little known to ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH 2302 W. Church Johnsburg them, a vast wilderness that this country was 134 years ago. The descendants of these men and women feel a deep sense of gratitude and pride f°r the development and progress of Johnsburg. The first German settlers who arrived in what is now known as Johnsburg, on Aug. 2, 1841. were Jacob Schmitt,# Nicolaus Adams and .John Baptist Mueller. They were joined by more families during the next three years, all migrating from the Coblenz and Eiffel regions of Germany. Fred Schmitt built the first chapel in 1843 in fulfilment of a vow he made during a terrible storip on his ocean voyage here. The first marriage uniting John Freund and Miss Wagner was performed in Nick Frett's home in the year 1843 also. In 1850, the first frame church was constructed in the Miller settlement. On Nov. 9, 1851, Bishop VandeBelde blessed the church and after the Mass, confirmed sixty- three persons. He returned on June 3, 1852, and confirmed thirty-three more persons in St. John's church. Prior to 1852, visiting priests ministereed to the people of Johnsburg. The first resident pastor in 1852 was the Rev.° John Jacomet. Fifteen pastors served St. John's through the close of the nineteenth century, ending with Rev. Henry Mehring, who served for twenty-four years, 1884 to 1908, the longest term of any of St. John's pastors. During this time, the church, constructed in 1879, was destroyed by fire. The present church was then erected and it remains today as one of the most imposing edifaces in the vicinity. This gothic building towers above all the surrounding country and can be seen from many miles' away when approaching Johnsburg. The Rev. Stephan Wolfagarten and the Rev. Edward Berthold succeeded Father Mehring, each serving three years. In 1915, the Rev. William Weber followed Father Ber thold, serving the parish for fifteen years. During his pastorate the Lourdes grotto was erected. It is an exact replica of the Lourdes grotto in France. May 24,1921, the grotto was dedicated by the Most Rev. P.J. Muldoon, Bishop of Rock- ford. From 1930-1938, the Rev. Anthony Vollman served St. John's as pastor. The Shrine of our Lady of Perpetual Help was erected during this time. The Rev. Albert J. Neidert, 1938-1949 was the next pastor, V with most of his efforts resulting in paying off the church dpbt which was nearly $17,000. The education of parish children has been carried on since 1850, with the first large scale building being destroyed by fire in 1945. The present parish school was constructed in 1953, during the pastorate of the Rev. Joseph Blitsch, 1949-1963. In 1964, the old convent was razed and the present convent was built. The School Sisters of St. Frances and lay teachers teach the children of St. John's today. The Rev. Father John^ Dording was appointed pastor of St. John's after the death of Father Blitsch in 1963. He served until June, 1970, when Rev. Leo J. Baretl was ap pointed. Father Dording still resides at St. John's rectory and is active in serving the. parish. As of 1968, twenty-one women have become nuns and seven men ordained priests from St. John's. Presently, one of the parishioners is one of fifteen candidates of the Rockford diocese who will receive the sacramental order of deacon at St. Peter's Cathedral, Rock- ford. Presently, the active parish organizations are, the Blessed Virgin Mary sodality, the Home and School association, the School board, the Athletic association, the Ushers club and the first Parish council which was formed in 1971. There are also ten lectors and eleven lay distributors of Communion. The Lady, Men and Junior Girl Foresters also have active organizations. In 1972, St. John's acquired a permanent director of music. UNITED PENTECOSTAL CHURCH There is a ladies' choir which sings at the 9 a.m. Mass each Sunday from September through June. In addition, there are two children's choirs that alternately sing at the 10:30 a.m. Mass each Sunday. The combined choirs, plus a brass ensemble under the direction of the music director, perform three to four times in church concerts each year. The Blessed Virgin Mary sodality this year (1975) presented St. John's with, an illuminated sign which is in front of the church. All of St. John's parish organizations are actively engaged in an extensive fund Chain O'Lakes Church Opens 12 Years Ago The Chain O'Lakes Evangelical Covenant church raising undertaking, namely to restore the beautiful 75-year old church building now badly in need of repair. The present building was erected in 1900 when less than 300 families were registered in the parish. Now, with the help of some 750 families which make up St. John's parish today and with the grace of God, this challenge will be accomplished. began meeting together in 1963. For several years'the group met at Grant Community high school in Fox Lake. Then in the fall of 1964, property was purchased on Wilmot road directly across from Whispering Hills. At first, services were held in the farm home on the property. On May 14, 1965, dedication ceremonies were held in the new church building. This building is unique in that it is a remodeled barn. Some of the old timbers were sand blasted and remain, giving a warm texture to the interior. The silo also remains.
