County Clerk Vernon Kays, a long time White Sox fan, is looking for that truck the Cubs used He wants to back it up to Comiskev Park. Vei n would start right at the front office and start loading. He would keep those young players who came from Iowa and mavbe a few others. This is the point in the season when we tell each other -- "Wait 'til next year". Yep, We saw the Freedom Train After walking blocks, standing in line and looking over the overpriced souvenirs, we finally got through the door of the^train. The whole show represents a lot of thought and a lot of work. It must have been interesting to anybody who wasn't standing on the moving track. As it was. we didn't have time to read letters or documents. But. how could they run thousands of people through the line (at a buck or two per head) if they gave them time"7 With legs slowly recovered from the train walk, we took two eager grandchildren to see the dog movie "Benji". That was good We could sit down. This isn't the season to be jolly for baseball managers. At last count, four big league leaders have felt the boom lowered on them. We don't think fellows like Yogi Berra will be heading for the food stamp window. Other dethroned skippers have contracts that have to be paid off covering the next year or two. So th^v will have time to go fishin before another job comes along. When teams fail to win, owners find it easier to fire the manager than to shuffle 25 players off' to Buffalo or someplace. Some managers should be on their way when they no longer •can pull their teams together . However, one wonders about the dismissal of popular Yogi Berra. All we know is what we read in the papers. The story has it that Manager Yogi sent player Cleon Jones up to pinch hit. After the inning was over, Yogi told Jones to play left field. Jones refushed. So Yogi told the owner, '.'It's him or me." Jones departed. Yogi got the hook. We have a feeling that a few big time athletes have grown too big for their britches. Another "Hookey Day" rolled around and again we joined the crowd at feast time, Man. they fed us! Presentation of prizes rolled along faster than usual and the whole day seemed to be per fect. Weather was just what the committee ordered. The first time we attended "Hookey Day" we were with Monsignor Nix and Glenny Wattles - and that was before the present clubhouse was constructed. That goes back a spell. Just to round out a busy whirl, we enjoyed the Mc- Cullom Lake Sportsman Club annual picnic on Sunday. About 1,600 men, women and children gathered for a great time on the club grounds near Hebron. There just doesn't seem to be anything to do in a small town! "McHenry Area I j 12-Inch Softball | HOUSE OF DAVID TAKES FIRST PLACE In a wild finish the McHenry Area 12 Inch Softball League saw Old Bridge lose an 'un- believeable' 24-23 game to Rusty Nail while House of David took an 8-4 decision from S.P.S.! Meanwhile Wetteland eliminated Phillip's 66 from any playoff hopes and kept themselves in the running for 4th place. In the 7th week of play Rusty Nail swept a pair from Old Bridge and took first place; however the Bridge won its next 8 ballgames and were tied for first until July 16 when they found themselves again all alone on top of the league with a 15-3 record. House of David was only a game behind at this point (14-4) and the schedule for July 23 matched the two ball clubs. House of David won 13-11 and was now tied with Old Bridge. The next games for both teams were wins and brought the league leaders into the final week of competition before the playoffs with identical 16-4 won- lost records. House of David won their game 8-4 although they needed 4 runs in the final innings to overcome S.P.S. Old Bridge was playing Rusty Nail. The Bridge led after 2 innings 10-1 and it looked like a runaway. But 3 innings later the score was tied at 12 runs each! Both teams scored 10 more runs a piece in the next 3 innings so going into the last inning it was tied 22-22. Rusty Nail scored two runs while Old Bridge managed only a run, leaving two runners on base and House of David found themselves in By Liz Nolan Tnis is the week that is for the women at McHenry Country Club. On Thursday and Friday, the 14th and 15th, the culmination of many months of planning and working will come to fruition in the first annual McHenry Women's Invitational 36-hole golf tournament. Shooting to pink and green flags (which will replace the conventional red and white ones) a field of 130 women, drawn from all over the Northern Illinois area will tee off at 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning and again on Friday morning. A dozen or so of the leading women state amateurs, including Cathy Sharpenter, top leader, will make up the championship flight, followed by four other flights. Under the leadership of Dolores Overton, the various committees have been hard at work developing what promises to be one of the prettiest and best-run amateur tournaments in the state. Using pink and green as their distinguishing colors, the ladies have sent out invitations, set up their scoreboards, handled entries, arranged for trophies and done the myriad of tasks that go into making a tournament sue- first place as the regular season ended. Congratulations to House of Dvid for winning first place. Indeed this was competitively the best year in league history. House of David 000 310 031-8 S.P.S. 100 201 000-4 Gene Hester the league's leading hitter, had 4 hits and 2 RBI's in leading the way for House of David. Greg Freund had 3 hitsincluding a triple and two RBI's while Terry Godina and Judd Decker had 3 hits each. Tom Janik drove in the deciding run on a sacrifice fly while John Johnston provided insurance with a run scoring pinch single. S P A. was led by Bob and Larry Dohr who had 2 hits each. Ed Kaminske scored two runs and drove in another. Larry Dohr had an RBI as did Steve Schmidt. Rusty Nail 011 734 062-24 Old Bridge 370 023 341-23 Rich Mueller and Kevin Bauer both had 5 hits in Rusty Nail's 29 hit attack. Len Ackermann and Jim Lay had 4 hits each; Ackermann scoring 3 runs. Charly Brown had a pair of doubles and a single driving in 3 runs while Bill Comstock and Gary Schmitt added 2 hits each. Old Bridge had 5 team homeruns but their pitching gave up 6 walks which proved disastrous. John Connell had 4 hits including a triple. Gary Connell had 3 hits including a 2 run homer and a run producing double. Davie Sundby had two solo homeruns. Pete Smith added a two run homer in the second inning while Rich Hopper had a two run blast in the sixth in ning. Wetteland Decorating must play Rusty Nail to conclude a suspended game which is tied at 10 runs each in the bottom of the 11th. If they win they tie S.P.A. for 4th pLace, but because they won 2 of 3 from S.P.A. during the regular season Wetteland would make the playoffs. Don't forget the playoffs this week. Games will be played Monday, August 11; Wed nesday, August 13; Thursday, August 14 and Sunday, August 17. The game on Thursday if Rusty Nail and Old Bridge need a third game will be played only if necessary. The game on Sunday if House of David and the 4th place team need a third game will be played only if necessary. The slight change was madetoaccommodate Rusty Nail who play in the Farm Bureau finals in Springfield. The change does give 12-inch baseball fans a chance to view two final games of semifinal play (if (hey both go to a third game.) The championship finals will be held on Wednesday, Thur sday - August 20 and 21 with a third game if necessary on Sunday August 24. (This is another change, moving the originally scheduled Monday first game back. Otherwise the dates are the same.) Come on down to West Campus High School for the playoffs! Starting time is 6:30 for the 7 inning contest. Pat Wirtz cessful. Betty Way tula and Joanie Buss have arranged for prizes international which will be awarded in each of the various flights for low gross and low net. Millie Leisten and Letty Busscher have been in charge of entries and an nounced the field has been filled for some weeks. Co- chairwoman, Judy Smithson has been tying the various committees together and an nounces that all systems are go and just crossed fingers for fair weather is needed. This is a tournament that will be held at McHenry Country Club annually. For those who enjoy golf and wish to say they saw the inaugural tourney you are invited to come out both days and follow the gallery. Chapel Hill Golf News Pietjy Putters FOX RIVER STONE CO.
