(Don Peasley Photography) EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR I Arnold Rauen and Yours Truly should feel like members of the Johnsburg Rescue Squad. We have taken part in every special event since the squad was organized. To keep the record going, the committee invited the two of us to take part in the Memorial Dedication program on Sunday afternoon. It was an impressive ceremony to honor the memory of deceased members. We won't go into names since another section of the Plain- dealer will have a report. This might be a good time to remind you that the Johnsburg Rescue Squad will hold a dance in the Community Club hall Saturday night. They want you to come. Of course, if you can't attend or don't have dancing slippers, you can buy a couple of tickets. Rescue squads do not get a slice of the tax money so they have to depend on donations. If rescue squad members can give their time (day or night) and know-how, the rest of us should be anxious to donate. That siren blows so often that we sometimes pinch ourself to be sure it isn't for us. When you Cub fans make snide remarks about there being only three White Sox fans in McHenry, we refer you to some you can add to the list--A1 Jourdan and the proprieters of the Fox Hole, "Red and Evo. Saw pictures of kids alongHhe Gold Coast having their hair styled -- for 15 dollars. That's a long way from the days when fathers put a bowl over the kids' heads and clipped away. Met "Sissie" Pinkstaff recently. She's the little gal who hit a grand slam homer to make her Dad the proudest fellow in the ball park. It was football in the mud- Saturday night at Milwaukee when^ the Packers beat the Bears* 13-9. No doubt "The Pack is Back." Their defensive line didn't give the Bears much But, let 's not get the idea that the Bears are pushovers this year. They are going to win some games. Larry and Lynn Lund en tertained the Plaindealer crew at their beautiful new home on Pistakee Saturday afternoon. After a guided tour, we didn't want to get lost in that large home so sat on the porch to watch the sail boats and other boats go by. While Wayne Gaylord cooked over a hot grille, his wife in sisted on bringing us a plate of food. With that kind of service, we sat. 'Twas a nice outing. Football and cross-country practice started at McHenry High Monday. Goodbye summer! WOMOCfcLAKC r I FLOTILLA 4-fc i uses. *>*• W" 2. Amidships 3. Port beam 4. Bow ANSWERS 1. You show your true boating colors by the speed at which you pass a gasoline dock or where boats are circling and waiting their turn to come in and fuel up. High speed produces high wake. And small boats with low transome can take in water from such a wake, or even capsize. At the very least, the wake will cause discomfort to others, and brand the offender as an unthinking fellow with little regard for others. ' OLD BRIDGE OlTSTS RUSTY NAIL By Pat Wirt-z Rusty Nail fell by the wayside in Wednesday evening's playoff game by a score of 7 to 3. Tt was their second straight loss without a win in the first round com petition and now they join the ranks of "wait til next year" ball clubs. Old Bridge's regular pitcher Steve Major returned to the mound and threw a five hitter as Rusty Nail 's bats went almost silent for the second game in a row. That was not the whole story as the Old Bridge defense was again in top form. Pat McQueeney made a sensational leaping catch on Gary Miller 's hot liner, which caught Jim Lay off first base for a double play. The timing had to be perfect as the ball was travelling at least 94 feet off the ground. And then Frank Lorch's game ending leaping catch of a liner off the bat of Bill Comstock. Dave Sundby made a nice running catch on A1 Elliott 's long foul fly. But still it is unbelievable to think The Nail had 11 hits in two ( games while scoring but 4 runs while in the final game of the season versus the same Old Bridge team they hit safely 29 times scoring 24 runs!9! Old Bridge scored three runs in the second when Pat McQueeney walked, took third on Steve Salter 's single, and scored on Frank Lorch's base hit. Saiter was thrown out at second attempting to stretch a single into a double, on a good throw from Bill Comstock to Len Ackerman. Lorch later scored after Steve Major doubled him to third and Tom McCormack grounded out getting the RBI. Pete Smith singled in Major for the final run of the inning. Pat McQueeney made it 5-0 in the third with a two run blast which carried well over left field. In the fifth inning John Connell hit a homerun to right center which barely got by the outstretched arms of Bill .Comstock. Gary Connell scored in (ront of him. Rusty Nail 's only score came in the fifth when Dennis Schmitt reached second on a throwing error, went to third on Comstock's single and scored on 'Gary Busse's fielders choice which forced Comstock. With two outs Jim Lay doubled Busse to third and both scored on Gary Miller 's single. This summer. Thomas has been in Scotland and therefore was unable to \ compete Santino, who finished second to Thomas in 1974 is the former North Suburban Con ference Champion. HOUSE OF DAVID OVER WETTELAND DECORATING House of David won 5 to 1 over Wetteland Decorating in their first playoff game. Every batter hit safely at least once for the House as they played errorless ball. House of David also looked sharp defensively as they turned two double plays besides throwing a runner out at the plate. The first doubleplay was a line shot which second baseman Pete Merkle turned into two quick outs. Merkle began the other one after fielding a hard hit grounder which he flipped to Decker covering second who threw to first to complete the outs. * The game was close all the wav as the House led 1 to 0 in the first after Steve George singled, advanced to second on a long flyout and scored on Greg Freund's base hit. The score held for three more in nings until Wetteland tied the game with what ended up their only run of the game. After two out Joe Lafontaine singled and went to third on Denny Sum- mercamp's base hit. Tom Sch mitt hit a single which scored Lafontaine however George thiew out Summercamp at tempting to score from first base. House of David came right back in the bottom half of the fifth inning with four big runs. John Hiller started things with a single, Judd Decker singled but was forced at second on Steve George's fielder's choice, Gene Hester doubled to right driving in George. Greg Freund singled in Hester and after Steve Rohrer singled an errant throw from the outfield per mitted Freund to score. The run in the sixth came on three successive singles by John Johnston, Terry Hovseth and Pete Merkle to round out the scoring. Wetteland Decorating 000 010 0-1 House of David 100 041 x-6 HOUSE OF DAVID GAINS FIN ALS House of David won their second playoff game over Wetteland Decorating by a score of 11 to 3. Wetteland had six errors, four in the fourth inning alone, as they helped to eliminate themselves in the post seasonBcompetition. House of David took advantage of most of W'etteland's mistakes including two first inning walks to Steve George and Gene Hester. Both runners advanced on Greg Freund's base hit to load the bases. Big Steve Rohrer was next up and he flew out to right all runners advancing. In the third Gene Hester hit a two out homerun with nobody on to boost the lead to 2-0. Wetteland could not move a runner into scoring position until the fifth inning however four more runs were scored by House of David in the fourth. Rohrer reached base on an error, Terry Godina singled and when the left fielder bobbled the ball there were runners on second and third. Pete Merkle singled driving in a run and took second on the throw to third base. John Johnston hit a shallow pop up which was dropped permitting two runs to score and the throw into third went by the fielder, Johnston taking second. Judd Decker drove in the final run of the inning with a double. Wetteland scored their first run in the fifth when Russ Wevland singled and later scored on Tom Schmitt 's base hit Denny Summercamp had singled Wevland to third just before Schmitt 's hit. In the next inning Wetteland closed to within 3 runs as Jerry Sullivan and Bryce Klontz hit solo homeruns. House of David scored the insurance runs in the final inning as George singled, advanced to third on Hester's two base error and then both scored on Greg Freund's single. Steve Rohrer doubled and Terry Godina hit a long 3 run homer into left center field. House of David will now meet the other playoff winner. Old Bridge in the best 2 of 3 series to begin Wednesday, Aug. 20. Game two is scheduled for Thursday, August 21 and game three is scheduled for ??? This series should be the best in recent years as first place House of David beat the Bridge 13-11 last time while second place Old Bridge beat the House 2 of 3 during the regular season Both teams are batting well while the defenses are equally tough. This series should be a tossup as to who will take the trophy and should provide fans with exciting softball this week.
