What Just One Person Can Do Twenty years ago, a minister told Mariam Allen, "Whether you like it or not, you have a job to do. People are going to be looking at you to see how you do it." Mariam was 29, married with three children, and had just been stricken with polio.. She decided to do her job. v "The biggest problem for me was^rying to manage my life and my house on crutches," she recalls. "I finally asked myself a question. Was my goal in life learning to walk, or living in the best way I could, given a handicap? I've been in the wheelchair ever since. I learned to live with what I have left." In 1961, at the age of 40, Mrs. Allen returned to college. She earned a Bachelor's degree at Stanford, graduating third in her class and Phi Beta Kappa.- 1 Then she went on for a Master's in speech pathology. She began teaching in the California school system, and was named, "most innovative teacher" for her work with deaf children. Mrs. Allen credits her husband, her children and people, in general, for what she has accomplished. "Because, you need help, wherever you are, you seem to develop a caring group around you. Other people'may hurt as much as I, but it isn't a visible thing," she explains. "You become a different person because of the love and joy and neat things that are fed into you." But a lot of the credit must also go to her acceptance of life on its own terms. As she puts it, "When I was young, I had a two-year plan and a three-year plan and a five-year plan. I guess I let go of all that and am willing to accept what's coming." But with a nose like Basil's who needs to see! Many folks have temporarily-impaired spiritual vision. But some times they can compensate in other ways. . . . . . like the man who brought his youngsters to church recently: "Myself, I'm not religious," he said, "but I sense their need for character development." Surprisingly, that father has returned to church. Now he is just as faithful as his children. We used to say of Basil, the moment he shakes himself he's got "twenty-twenty" vision. The same is true of many people once they sense their God-given responsibilities. Copyright 1975 Keisier Advertising Service, Inc.. Strasburg.
