On The Sidelines 'by DicK Rabbitt The Warriors entertain Mundelein tonight in the annual homecoming game at McCracken Field. As per usual a large crowd of the old grads are expected to attend and the Warriors promise not to disappoint them in the game. The Warriors are ready to bounce back from that defeat at Libertyville last week. The "Cats" played extremely well, and went around, over, and throught the Warriors at will. It could be the turning point in the season for the Wildcats. They have a big, fast, and well coached team. Matthews, their fine southpaw passer can really hit the mark. The Warriors on the other hand are still a fine team. They will be right in the thick of the fight, and tonight is a good time to start on their winning ways again. The big game of the week will take place tomorrow at Barrington. The ZeeBees and Broncos both with a 3 and 0 record will match two fine teams. The Broncos never seem to run out of players. This year they have three transfer students who are regulars. Graduation last year took a heavy toll, but they always seem to come up with a transfer or two. Oklahoma is under probation, and Michigan State is under investigation, Oh well! Congratulations are in order to Andy Oakley the mainstay of Coach Bill Hutchinson's Cross Country team. His record breaking performance of 15:54 for the three mile course at West campus didn't come easy. Andy runs every day of the year, rain, shine, snow or mud. He is a hard worker, and is in tip top condition the year around. He runs for endurance, and he also runs sprints every day. He is not only a fine athlete, but is also tops in the classroom. If you get a chance, come around to West campus one of these evenings and not only watch Andy run, but the entire cross country team. You won't be sorry. For you fans attending the game tonight you'll see something new at least in recent years in a football offense. The "Side Saddle" used by Mundelein, with two quarterbacks right up under the center. Frank Leahy used this system at Notre Dame many years ago. It didn't prove too successful, so he junked it. Maybe after Friday night Mundelein will do likewise. Ron Miller, former McHenry football star opened his senior season, and fourth year at quarterback for the Elmhurst Blue Jays last Saturday. The Jays lost to Carthage 24 to 13, but Bonnie had a fine day. He had 163 total yards including a dipsy doodle play where quarterback Miller received a pass and raced 24 yds to a T.D. I'll bet the scouts in the stands went for their pencils in a hurry after that play. Coach Mike Shanahan's Water Polo team has quite a schedule. Playing the top teams in the state has to be a feather in the cap of the Warrior coach. For the past two seasons the Warriors have qualified for the state finals, and Mike has high hopes again this year. With the caliber of competition they play, it has to be a boo6t when tournament time rolls around. The golfers are still winning, and as I have said before, Coach Cuda with his young team, will be tough to beat as the season progresses. If the weather stays good this week, and there is no rain, snow, etc., S.I.H. is going to be in for a big surprise Friday night when he arrives at the press box. ; We are crossing our fingers for good weather, we would like nothing better than to pull the BIG surprise on the genial Irishman. Well, it is easy to appreciate the pre dominance of this coin when one realizes the trem endous silver (and gold) resources the Spanish con trolled in Mexico and in South American colonies. Fully 250 years before the establishment of the United States Mint in 1792 and 70 years before the English landed at James town (1607), the first mint in the New World was built by Spain in Mexico City... the year was 1536. Mexican Mint records document that from 1537 until 1821, when Mexico gained Independ ence, more than $2 billion worth of silver coin was produced. The continued existence of the Mexican "Mint for over 400 years is longer than any in the world. Spanish armadas were constantly active in trans porting cargos of gold and silver riches from Mexico and settlements in South America....one Spanish galleon might be carrying as much as 100,000 pounds of silver or 400 to 800 throusand Spanish dollars. With considerable fre quency, Colonists would outfit "privateers" armed to capture these Spanish ships, bringing them into American ports. This is not the least of reasons why the Spanish dollar became particularly evident in the American colonies even through it was a worldwide coin. FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY, 3814 W. Elm St. Telephone 385-5400. GENOA CITY TOURNAMENT Two McHenry Area 12 Inch teams played in a 16-team tournament in Genoa City, Wisconsin. The games were played on Saturday and Sunday Sept. 13 and 14, and the teams representing the league in cluded Rusty Nail and House of David. Both teams won Saturday first round games easily as Rusty Nail slaughtered Morton Chemical 15-0 in 4'/2 innings and House of David won by a 10-0 score. Rusty Nail next met House of David to determine which team would make the playoffs on Sunday afternoon. Rusty Nail held on to win 9 to 8 as a House of "David last inning rally fell short. Although the House outhit Rusty Nail it looked as though mental errors caused from 3 weeks layoff contributed more to their loss. In fact both teams combined for 11 errors and in general, except for the flashes of a few excellent defensive plays, looked flat in the field. Matt Oik played a solid third base for House of David and Steve Rohrer at first picked up a couple of bouncing throws which could have easily gotten by. Rusty Nail's shortstop A1 Elliot made the play on every ball hit to him and John Michaels in center and Jim Gray in right made two great running catches on balls which would have decided the out come for the House. The big story for Rusty Nail was Gary Schmitt's bat as he went 3 for 3 including a double and a homerun, three runs scored and two RBI's. Dave May added a 3 run homer and John Michaels had a 2 run homer down the left field line. All those homeruns accounted for the 6 runs in the third. Dennis Schmitt added 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Steve Rohrer led the House with 3 hits including a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Tom Janik only had one hit but a long sacrifice fly accounted for 2 of his 3 RBI's. Wayne Frantz had a 2 run homer while John Hiller, Mike Freund, and Steve George had 2 hits each. House of David: ab r h rbi Hiller, J. 4 12 1 Freund,M. Frantz, W. Rohrer, S. Janik, T. George, S. Triangle Tavern, who went on to win the tournament, won by a score of 7 to 2. The winners managed only 7 hits but took advantage of 4 Rusty Nail errors. Rusty Nail had 5 hits; Gary Schmitt getting a long triple and single good for 1 RBI while Jim Gray added a double which moved Randy Thiel into scoring position in the first. Of interest to 12-inch fans is the 3 ball, 2 strike rule which in tournament play gives the pitcher an advantage in that any swinging strike or foul ball is an automatic strike out. The McHenry 12-inch league will use Dear Secretaries: Here we are again. Our offer to furnish copy paper still stands. Just ask. Do not crowd so much on one sheet. Use another sheet. Do double space. this rule next year. Rusty Nail v as not used to the rule as they averaged 5 batters per game being called out while the Wisconsin teams were called out only twice per game. The Nail next met Fontes from Genoa City, a team which took first place in that league. The hitting, which was lacking against Traingle, looked good in this game as the Rusty Nail combined for 3 doubles and 2 homeruns and 14 hits altogether. Randy Thiel had 3 singles and 2 runs scored. Gary Busse had two hits while Jim Gray also had two hits plus 3 RBI's. Dave May drove in 4 runs with a 2 run double and 2 run homer. Gary Miller added a 2 run homer while Charly Brown went 2 for 2 with 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI's. The win gave The Nail the 3rd place trophy!! Next year the McHenry Area 12 Inch League will be looking for new teams. If you are thinking of bringing in a team or would just like to play 12 inch, slow, pitch, call Pat Wirtz - 385-0191 for information. Please remember that next year there are 3 ALL-STAR games set with different area softball leagues plus 3 and maybe 4 tournaments for league teams. Besides a regular 21 game league schedule and the 6 game playoff championships the added ALL-STAR games and tournaments will give McHenry Area "softball nuts" a summer full of baseball for next season!! If you don t type, please print . Have had one heckuva t ime with names. Don' t tear off a corner of a score sheet to write down scores. If is f ine to save paper, but don' t s tart here.
