We did nothing here but have dinner, excellent wall eyed pike, a most estimable fish and sleep in a comfortable motel that was nowhere nearly full. This was off season. Prices for most accommodations were down--below the book price. Next morning, the twenty- third, we headed for Spooner. Spooner has 2,444 residents. In the summer, since it is in a lake area, its size increases enor­ mously. It is thus a most im­ portant town. A sign along the highway advised that in Spooner there was a store with the largest selection of liquor in Wisconsin; we saw the place in town as we passed by. Here the claim was that their stock was the largest in the Middle West. Advertisers can stretch as far as their imaginations. The town was all torn up. They were repaving all the downtown streets to make way for more parking and better ingress and egress of cars. This in preparation for next sum­ mer's visitors. I am glad they are doing it in the off season. One of Wisconsin's great crops is cranberries. We took a tour of thirty miles over back roads to see the changing colors. By chance we came upon a cranberry farm. All is under water--no deeper than a man can wade. Out from the bank you can see the little shiny red rascals. Men were wading about filling small flat scowlike boats with fruit and plant. They are pretty hard to clean I imagine. When there are several boats full they get them to a spot near shore, push them into concentrations of a couple of dozen boats full and by link carrier load them on trucks. This calls for men to wade about in the water. It looked like cold miserable work. So much effort was being ex­ pended on the berries. Ap­ preciate your cranberry sauces and beverages a little more this fall. They are brought to you by dint of hard, hard work. When in a smaller town such as Spooner we eat where we see the townsfolk heading. They will nearly always lead you to a good inexpensive town lunch site where the locals freshen up at noon. The specialty we hit was sausage and sauerkraut. I could not imagine a tummy full of greasy sausage. We settled for bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich on toast. It is pretty hard to spoil that. Prices on that item ranged from 75 cents to $1.75 on this trip Why? I wonder. Spooner was so torn up with paving and change we decided to return to Rice Lake for the night. As we bowled along we passed a cemetery. It is almost exactly the size of Illinois being about 300 square miles smaller. It was admitted to the Union in 1848, thirty years after Illinois. Here is America's Dairyland. Inside its borders is produced more dairy products, milk and cheese than in any other state in the Union. It is a state of farms- this profession leads all others in the commonwealth. Tourism is a huge industry. There are over 8,000 lakes. Pulp producing forests support a large paper industry. Machinery, engines, turDines, food products, brewing and many other industries give strength to the Wisconsin economy. There are strong Roman Catholic churches and many Lutheran parishes, bearing evidence to the Ger­ man, Scandinavian and Swiss ^founders. The state's population has long been politically liberal, remember the LaFollets and today's leaders. Wisconsin is a great, strong, liberal, rich part of our coun­ try. It has many strong schools and colleges and its university with branches all over the state has long led in the training of leaders in all fields of en­ deavor. This time we were exploring the one part of the state where we had never been before. When we were planning our retirement one of the places we hunted was southern Wisconsin. One of the reasons we like McHenry is that it is close to Chicago and Milwaukee and its big back yard. It is so close to home you can get there quickly and ex­ plore at your leisure. State Police Indicate Decreases In Traffic Deaths The Superintendent of the Illinois State Police, Dwight E. Pitman, announced provisional figures which indicate that during the month of September 1975, 176 persons died from injuries sustained from traffic accidents on Illinois highways. The number of deaths reflect a decrease of 10 for the month of September in 1974. 1,532 people have been killed since January 1 of this year. There were 1,440 killed during the same period of 1974 showing an increase of 92. Captain Herald Crockett, District Commander for the area including Kane, Lake, McHenry, DeKalb and DuPage Counties reports that twenty- seven persons were killed in traffic accidents in District 2 during the month of September 1975. This includes: Thirteen fatalities in Lake County; six fatalities in DuPage County; six fatalities in Kane County; one fatality in McHenry County; one fatality in DeKalb County. Captain Crockett indicated that the worst day for traffic fatalities during September in District 2 was Sept. 22 with the following breakdown: Four fatalities in Lake County; three fatalities in DuPage County; two fatalities in Kane County; Total nine fatalities. Captain Crockett also released provisional figures on activity for District 2 Troopers for the month of September. 1,972 Arrest citations were issued. 1,711 written warnings. 120 motorists assists (stran­ ded) and 187 accident in­ vestigations. District 2 personnel also initiated investigations on eighty field reports and with some of these requiring further investigation by State Police detectives. District 2 Detective Division initiated investigation on twenty-five criminal cases opened in September.
