We all know that Crown does not compare with the Broncos of last week. However, we may be sure that Coach Day will not let the boys take it easy in preparation for the game. --On-any; given day, any team can pull an upart. That's what coaches fear. When a team looks forward to a game the following week, they are wide open for a rude awakening. Never heard of complaining about the heat in October until the 90 degree temperature hit the first part of this week. Our summer clothes had been put away for the winter. The way the Chicago Bears are trying to play football must give Abe Gibron, coach who got bounced, a smile. Give a coach the top players and he will look good. Politicians are pulling out all the plugs these days to smear the opposition. Speeches and press releases sound like old familiar tunes. A bunch of the boys have organized to help our snappy MCHS cheerleaders at the football games. Of course, they aren't nearly as good as the little gals, but add some fun. The boys haven't invaded the band and pom-pom formations which get better all the time. Each year we dish out praise for John Leighty and his group. And each year we enjoy their performance more and more. As we write this, the Reds By Dick Rabbitt Mark Saladin took St. Ed's opening kickoff 92 yards into paydirt to start the Hurricanes on their way to a homecoming victory last Saturday at Woodstock. Wally Bitschura's kick was good and for all practical purposes the game was over. The Green Wave came back in the second period helped by two Marian penalties to score their only touchdown of the game. Coach Wally Bowman of the "Wave" elected to go for the two point conversion, but it failed and the Wave trailed 7 to 6. The Marian defense was just super. Coach Tom Parker told me, "It was a unit type effort on the part of the defense that gave us the victory". The "Canes" held the St. Edward offense to just 29 yds. on the ground, while the offense of Marian ground out a total of 203 on the ground. The Green Wave defense also played good ball, intercepting three deflected Marian passes, and grabbing off three Marian fumbles. The final Marian score came late in the fourth period, when a St. Ed punt went astray out of bounds at midfield. Six plays later John Connerty went in from the three yard line, and lead the Red Sox 2 games to 1. Can just see the smile on John Busscher's face. Wonder what he will have to say about his big Red bullies blocking out Boston's catcher so he can't throw to second base. He'll probably tell us it's an alibi. (It probably is, but nevertheless a handy one to use.) Our "Little Helen" is vacationing this week and JoAnn Hutchinson has to hit those line-o-type keys all by herself. We pour in the sports page copy, but JoAnn comes up smiling. Helen never com­ plains, either. Nice girls, We like 'em. Bitschura's kick was good for the 14th point and a Marian victory. It was an elated Marian coach after the game. Victories against the Green Wave generally don't come too often, and this win was a sweet one for the Marian coach and his squad. It should give them the lift they need for the coming game tomorrow, when they travel to Montini in a East Suburban Conference game. McHenry Pigtail League The McHenry Pigtail League has changed the date of their election of officers meeting to Friday, October 24. It will still be held at the McHenry Firehouse at 7:30 p.m. We are sorry if we have inconvenienced anyone with the change of the date. The meeting is open to the public. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warriors Hope To Rebound Against Crown Saturday By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bill Day's McHenry High "Warriors" hope to rebound from their loss to Barrington last week against the Crown Vikings tomorrow at Crown Bowl. The Warriors came out of the Bronco fray with only Jim Engmark a question mark at this time. The lanky senior wingback injured his knee, but there is a possibility he may see some action tomorrow af­ ternoon. The squad has shrugged off the Barrington defeat, and has been going all out early this week, in preparation for the Vikings. The Broncos just had too many horses for the Warriors to f handle. • The Vike's will be looking for their first win of the season. They now stand 0 and 6, and Coach Bill Owen is determined that his squad will win at least one game this season. We hope it is not tomorrow. The Vikings are led by quarterback Dale Bernhard, a 6'4" 185 lbs. senior. The half­ backs Scott Krueger, an all conference selection last season, and Wally Rohde who can pick them up and lay them down. Steve Polous a 6'2" 195 lb. senior fullback round out the Viking backfield. The interior of the Viking line is big, but are a bit on the slow side. One of their main weakness, is that the team has no overall speed, except Rohde. With 13 let- termen returning the Vikings were a pick for the first division by the conference coaches early in the season, but have been a disappointment thus far. It all adds up to a good game, so I suggest you travel down to Crown tomorrow and watch a good football game. In the crystal ball depart­ ment, it really broke last week, although I did manage to pick 2 out of 5 for a season's record of 21 and 9. This week I'm going with the Warriors, I have a hunch they will put it all together and send the Vikings down to defeat number seven. Lake Forest still riding high over Zion win to easily defeat North Chicago. Zion to rebound and beat a tough Dundee game in a thriller. The Tigers to take Mundelein, and the upset of the year Libertyville to beat the Broncos. The Cats seem to get fired up against the Big Red. Harriers Beat Crown And Crystal Lake By Dick Rabbitt The "Running Warriors" of McHenry High School defeated both Crystal Lake and Crown Monday morning at Randall Oaks Golf Course. The Warriors tripped up Crystal Lake 21 to 37 and Crown 15 to 48. Senior Andy Oakley again led the Warriors by winning both meets. Other scorers for McHenry were: Vince Linnane, Rich Burman, Fred O'Halleran and Greg Schaffer. The pushers were Ron Himplemann and Jerry Pepping. The sophs lost to Crown 23 to 36, and the frosh defeated both Crystal Lake and Crown by the score of 19 to 44.- Jaycees Of Crystal Lake To Sponsor Turkey Shoot Oct. 19 The Crystal Lake Jaycees will once again sponsor a Turkey Shoot in Crystal Lake Sunday.
