Crop Residues Stretch Winter Feed Supplies Corn and soybean residues can help stretch winter hay and silage supplies for beef cows. But don't rely on crop residue as a total replacement feed, says George Young, University of Illinois Extension adviser in McHenry county. The best use of dry corn and soybean residues is to feed them half and half with good quality hay. This eliminates the need for supplemental protein and grain in most cases, he continues. . Cows fed only dry cornstalks will lose weight. Some weight loss is allowable if the cows are in good shape at the beginning of winter. But thin cows may not survive the winter on dry State Soil Judging cornstalks and protein sup plement, Young observes. Harvesting the two center corn rows that contain the combine tailings can produce about one ton of dry matter per acre. This also improves feed quality because the shucks are more digestible than the stalks. Cornstalk silage made soon after harvesting high moisture corn also has a higher feed value than dry stalks and often produces a slight weight gain in wintering cows, says Young. Costs for harvesting, tran sporting and feeding dry stalks are about $10 to $15 per ton of dry matter. Fertilizer value of the stalks is about $4 per ton of dry matter removed. And costs for protein, minerals and vitamin A needed to supplement stalks are about $10 per ton of dry matter. The total expense is nearly $30 per ton of stalk dry matter, he adds. In addition, if 5 pounds of grain per day need to be fed with stalks to get cows through late winter, another $10 is added to the cost of feeding one ton of stalk dry matter. The total cost thert is the same as feeding $40 per ton-hay. If cornstalk residues are in short supply, one may consider pasturing neighboring fields, says Young. Pasture charges for stalks are highly variable. As long as cows get enough nutrients by grazing stalks to maintain their weight, they receive the equivalent of 15 to 20 pounds of hay per day. A farmer should pay no more to rent stalk pasture than the total value of the day that the stalks replace. In fact, the stalks are worth less than the hay and require supplement that may cost ten cents per head-per day. So a pasture charge of ten cents per head per day brings the total ration cost to 20 cents per head per day. However, if a field being grazed is to be used for soybeans next year, one may feel that not having to chop corn out of soybeans is worth running the cows on the stalks at no charge. And the manure they return to the land is a bonus, says Young. Soybean tailings collected directly from a combine are about as valuable as corn residue. Soybean residue collected by a stacker or baler may contain a high proportion of stems to pods, which is a very poor quality feed. In the latter case, the value of the feed obtained would be no more than the cost of harvesting and feeding it. High school student contestants examine the soil during participation in the Illinois State Soil Judging contest. McHenry County college was host school for Section 6 of the Illinois State Soil judging competition last week. Twelve high schools from Boone, De- Kalb, Kane, and McHenry counties participated in the contest which was held on the John Pfingsten farm near Ridgefield. Each school had a team of five contestants who were judged on their conclusions after analysis of four different sites. Judging was based on inventory of the land, limitations for its use and management practices suggested. Sycamore high school was the top team: Marengo high school was second. Tyronne Goddard, Soil Survey leader from the University of Illinois extension in Kane county, was the official judge. The McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation district made all the arrangements at the site for the competition and the judging. and LOOK. at this price 15* # # # LISTEN. 000 Your first refreshing frosted mug of OLD SlYLi BEER for only When ordering any food basket during table serving hours...5 p.m. til closing LIMITED TIME ONLY BARON OF BEEF 3709 W. Scott has advised Illinois residents that so-called "sympathy sales" teams are active in several cities in the state. Scott said his office is in vestigating several such operations which play on sympathies by indicating their sales somehow assist han dicapped people. Scott said past experience of his Charitable Trust and Consumer Protection divisions had found the sales operations often employed no persons with generally recognized physical disabilities or employed only a minimal number of such people. Scott said that recently his office had obtained an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance from one such firm that it would observe state law governing deceptive practices. Scott declined to name the operation, saying he did not want to mislead the public into believing any "sympathy sales" operation was sanc tioned by the Attorney General's office. Scott also observed that many of the sales organizations have similar names, employing such words as "Handicapped", "Blind", "Deaf", or "Disabled", which contributes to public confusion. Thl$Attorney General said that even when his office ob tains a compliance agreement, it frequently takes a good deal of monitoring to make sure the sales organization makes a genuine effort to comply with consumer protection laws. "It's reasonable to assume", Scott said, "that during the time we spend investigating each such sales campaign that's reported to our Consumer Protection division, hundreds of sales are made." "While we will vigorously prosecute provable cases of deception, the best protection for a consumer is to refuse to buy over-priced items that are offered through a sympathy sales pitch. People who want to really help the handicapped should donate through established local agencies, and buy whatever items they want, at normal prices from local retailers." Scott said the sales firms solicit both by telephone and door-to-door, offering everything from long-lasting light-bulbs to hand-made goods such as pot-holders. The Voluntary Compliance agreement requires the sales firms to report the number and identities of handicapped people they employ describe the handicaps, and make clear in their sales presentations that they are "For Profit" operations. Scott said citizens who want to check on any organization that represents itself as a charity can contact his Charitable Trust division in Springfield at area 217-782-1090, or Chicago, area 312-793 2595, to determine if the organization is registered. The Attorney General said any citizen who wished to register a complaint about deceptive practices can do so by calling his Consumer Protection division, in Springfield.area217-782-1090, or in Chicago, area 312-792-3580.
