StrfSIl? by Gerry Johnson For Him, Retirement Will be for the Birds Harry Kinney is carving out quite a future for himself. He's about one year away from retirement and he is lit erally whittling away the time until he leaves his sales job. Mr. Kinney does not idly pile up wood shavings when he puts a blade to wood; he creates works of art. He carves birds. These birds are now sold in galleries in Dallas, Okla homa City, and his home town, Lubbock, Texas. They R REAL ESTATE "MAIN ST. "I look forward to the time I can carve all the time," Mr. Kinney said. "I'm sort of semi-retired now. I work for myself (as a traveling sales representative), and I'm out selling only about a third of the time," Mr. Kin ney said. "I've been at this job 15 or 16 years, so I have some regular customers and I can serve them without tak- ' ing too much time. "The rest of the time I work on my birds." Mr. Kinney, who recently turned 64, said, "I've carved about 55-60 birds, 1 guess. I made 30 or 40 I didn't try to sell. I was just learning." It was the high ptice of birds that got Mr. Kinney into the business. "I got to looking at some, carved birds one day. They were mighty nice looking, but I couldn't afford them.. So, I decided to do it myself," he recalled. v Mr. Kinney was no strang er to working with wood when he started carving, al though he got to the bird business through a round about route. After teaching for 14 years in Oklahoma and Kansas, he quit to open a lumber-hard ware store in Kansas. "I left teaching because the salaries were pretty low. Then, after I found there wasn't much money in the store either, I built houses. "About that time my daughter developed asthma and we moved down here (Lubbock) where the cli mate was better for her. In my spare time, I was doing some wood work, building different things for hobby shops before I got interested in birds." Mr. Kinney brings to his work a love for the birds as well as an ability to carve. "I study the birds," he said. "I've always been sort of a bird-watcher. I like to know the habits of the birds, all I can about them." His daughter said he has been known to stop along th& highway and examine birds that have been hit by a car so he can get to know his subjects better. Mr. Kinney said he spends a great deal of time working on his birds, but this work does not isolate him. "My wife does most of the paint ing. I do some, but she's a better painter. So, this makes a team out of it." The Kinneys were in Vir ginia earlier this year for a gathering of bird carvers. "There were about 365 carv ers there. I learned a lot and I think I can make better birds now," he told a writer with The National Council on the Aging. By ̂ talking with him, it is obvious how much he enjoys his new-found career. "In about a year I'll retire to my birds," he said. It is clear that "retiring" to Mr. Kin ney means a whole new life. Even if he were not so talented in his carving, Mr. Kinney said he would be working at something. "Ev erybody needs a hobby rOjf some kind," he said. / A classic dress in a print is a must for the trav eler who doesn't wear pants. President Illinois State Chamber of Commerce Capital is as basic to our economic svstem as apples are to apple pie. We all know what apples are. But what is capital? It's a term that is being bandied about more than ever these days. Basically, capital consists of goods or funds that can he used to produce income. That income goes to pay people for working, for company expansions, new product development, for profits and many other uses. An example might tun something like this: Joe Smith gets an idea for an electric mousetrap. To make mousetraps to sell, he uses some savings and borrows the rest to build a plant and buy equipment to produce the mousetraps. Iti this example, Joe's savings and borrowings as well as the plant and equipment are all types of capital. The money he makes selling the electric mousetraps will be used to pay the people who run the machines, to purchase raw materials and to pay back the money he had to borrow to get started. Hopefully, something will be left over --called a profit --which Joe can use to add to his savings or to expand his operations. This simple example sounds like the process should run smoothly, but recently the formation of adequate capital to serve our economy has become a major problem nationwide. For private companies there are only three sources of capital. The first is through their earnings which they don't have to pay out in wages, taxes or other expenses. The second is by borrowing. And the third is by selling st<)ck in their companies. All three of these methods require profit. You must have after-tax profits in order to retain any earnings. Profits are needed to pay stockholders dividends and to pay interest and principal on debts. Aggravating the situation is the fact that after-tax profits of U.S. corporations actually decreased dur ing the eight-year period from 1965 to 1973. Also government at all levels is borrowing more and more each day to finance its operations and is thus competing with business for available capital. These trends must be reversed if business is to find the money so necessary to future growth and the crea tion of new jobs. TV ICOMMENTARY By John Smiley CAPTAIN KANGAROO was launched on CBS 20 years ago. Bob Keeshan has played the good cap tain for all these years. Recently he gave some of his views on the effect of television on youngsters. He thinks TV should not be used as a convenient baby sitter. A child learns more, he thinks, from real life experiences than from viewing TV. On "Captain Kangaroo" an attempt is made to divert youngsters toward real-life activities. If he survives in this show, it will be a classic case of the under dog coming out as a winner. His show is scheduled into ABC's disaster time peri od. ABC will have a plane load of stars on an upcom ing TV-movie called "Mur der on Flight 502." On board will be Peter Law- ford, Robert Stack, Ralph Bellamy, Sonny Bono, Hugh O'Brian, Laraine Day, Wal ter Pidgeon, Dave Clark, George Maharis, Theodore Bikel, Molly Picon and Polly Bergen. ANOTHER ABC TV- movie that will soon be seen is "Griffin and Phoenix." This one stars Peter Falk and Jill Clayburgh. They play terminally ill patients. It sounds like a sad story.
