Half of Green street from Elm street to the com­ munity high school has been completed and work was begun on Pearl street Wednesday morning. We are prepared to supply dairymen in need of springers and new milkers in different breeds of cattle. These are all tuberculin tested. For further information, call E E. Monear, McHenry or E M. Aylward, Hebron. With Walter Leonard's departure to Chicago, C.J. Riley is now manager of the National Tea store of this city. Mr. Riley and his family have moved from DeKalb and are now occupying the Brooks home on the corner of Pearl and Court streets. A party of twelve assembled at the Bald Knob hotel for a 6 o'clock dinner to honor Mr. and Mrs. R.I. Overton on their anniversary. Dancing followed the dinner in which C.W. Stenger and William Spencer demonstrated the Charleston. Members of the McHenry Kiwanis club held their weekly meeting and dinner at Justen's hotel. President J. Scott Matthews presided. W.L. Howell put on a reel of moving pictures of local interest. A flashlight picture of the at­ tendants at the dinner was taken by photographer Bobb. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Conway at the Woodstock hospital, a baby girl Oct. 12. • FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 17, 1935) Mrs. T.J. Walsh, one of McHenry's oldest and highly esteemed residents, was seriously injured Sunday morning when she was struck by an automobile on Route 20 in Centerville, sustaining three broken ribs, an injured ankle and severe bruises on her legs, body, arms and head. George Haas, 34, died at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, following an operation which he underwent at the hospital. Mr. Haas had been in McHenry for about two years where he was employed as barber in the John Dreymiller barber shop. Miss Clara Stoffel was hostess to members of the Neighborhood club Thursday evening. Bridge was played with prizes going to Mrs. Peter Justen, Mrs. Thomas Phalin and Lena Stoffel. Oct. 8, the Girls' Athletic association of the high school organized for the year with fifty girls signing up for mem­ bership. Coach Reed entertained the boys of the football team at the high school. Refreshments were served by the girls of the * cooking class assisted by their teacher, Miss May Justen. A rural school Fall Social of more than ordinary interest is scheduled at Barreville school Oct. 25. There will be a popularity contest. The four who have entered so far are Miss Nellie Pearson of McHenry; Miss Florence Carlson,'Miss Caroline Johnson and Miss Clara Raven of Crystal Lake. Dr. and Mrs. Paul Schwabe are the parents of a 7>2 lb., daughter born at Highland Park hospital. Dr. Schwabe maintains an office in West McHenry one day each week. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 26, 1950) Robert Krinn, Harold Vycital and William Green of McHenry attended the fall meeting of the Eleventh district of the American Legion held in the Woodstock Legion home. During the afternoon, William Green was installed as ad­ jutant. Marion Wirtz of the McHenry community is one of two student teachers from the University of Illinois assigned to Milf&rd township high school for six weeks' teaching ex­ perience beginnig Oct. 23. Two prize contests open to all grade and high school students were announced this week by the McHenry Community Parent Teachers association. Prizes will be awarded for the best three posters made by a student to promote the "Frolics of 50" musical and talent show Nov. 28 and 29. Judges for the poster contest will be Mrs. Lee Gladstone, William Meeker and Norbert Mauch. Fox River Valley Camp R.N.A. is sponsoring a bake sale Oct. 28 to be held at Althoff's hardware store, West McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Adams spent several days in St. Louis, Mo., where they visited his sisters who are in the convent there. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 21, 1965) The Sewing guild of the Woman's auxiliary to McHenry hospital donated the proceeds of $100 from the dessert lun cheon and card party which was held at the K. of C. hall. The money will be used in the building fund. A beautiful painting by Lori Wilhelm, 1965 featured artist of the County Art Fair, was awarded to Mrs. Alice Barbian. Miss Mary K. Adams of Rich­ mond road, McHenry, became the bride of Mr. Dennis C. Diedrich of Chapel Hill road in a wedding solemnized Oct. 16, Rev. Matthew Rudden of­ ficiated at the service. Mrs. May Powers celebrated her ninetieth birthday an­ niversary Oct. 13 by visiting in the home of her brother, John Wall, in her former home in Sycamore. Miller Feeds and Seeds company, Crystal Lake road, McHenry, has been named area dealer for Nutrena feeds.
