PAGE 14 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. OCTOBER 31, 1975 fl Seek Seats On Johhsburg School Board H CHARLES D. BOAK, JR. Charles D. Boak, Jr. of 4013 Hillcrest drive, McHenry, is presently serving his second term on the District 12 board. He is seeking reelection to the unit district board. Boak, who is manager of an insurance agency, graduated from Libertyville high school and attended Lawrence college, the University of Arizona and the University of Illinois. He and his family have lived in the area for seventeen years. In work relating to schools, Boak served as president of the Johnsburg P.T.O. for two years and was chairman of the Committee of Ten for forming a unit district. Major Problems We must make surcMJiat the citizen's Feasibility Study is followed both financially and educationally and that funds for the new high school are kept separate from our elementary school funds. We must also make sure that we do not allow the current excellent elementary curriculum to take a second seat to the new high school. Ideas For Meeting Them Be very strict in the budget controls that are kept on both the high school and elementary schools. And we must not allow our enthusiasm for the new high school to override our continued dedication to providing the best elementary education possible. WESLEY C. BRUCE Wesley C. Bruce of 5013 Ringwood road, Ringwood, is one of twelve persons seeking a term on the unit district board. Bruce, a lifetime resident of Ringwood, attended Ringwood grade school and McHenry Community high school. In recent years, he worked on the committee to consolidate Ringwood and Johnsburg schools. Bruce, who works in machine shipping for I.H.C., has a wife, Wanda and two children. Major Problems The financial situation to operate the district with minimal taxes for the public and community support. Ideas For Meeting Them To keep the school at the highest standards possible with the limited amount of taxes to the public. THOMAS W.CAHILL Thomas W. Cahill is seeking a seat on the unit district board. He lives at 3407 N. Countryside drive, McHenry, with his wife, Arlene, and their three children. Cahill is a graduate of Antioch high school and is employed as a supervisor for Illinois Bell Telephone company. In work relating to schools, Cahill has served as a member of the Dual Enrollment committee for Johnsburg-St. John's schools, worked on the Citizens Advisory committee for District 156, served on the Committee of Ten and was a member of the Johnsburg Feasibility study - Finance committee. He is affiliated with the Johnsburg P.T.O., St. John's church and Illinois Bell Telephone Pioneers. Major Problems In my opinion, the major problems which face the new unit district are: Constructing and equipping the new high school efficiently and economically, following as closely as possible the guidelines suggested by the Feasibility Study committee and working in cooperation with District 156. Ideas For Meeting Them To solve these problems, I think the new school board should become effective as soon as possible after the election and the Division of Assets should be efficiently and fairly accomplished. Necessary committees for the building of the new high school should be formed. BOBBIE JEAN HART Mrs. Bobbie Jean Hart has served on the District 12 board for the past three years and is now seeking reelection to the unit board. She lives with her husband, William, and their three children at 4403 Hickoryway drive, McHenry. They have resided in the area for ten years. Mrs. Hart, a homemaker, is a former high school French and English teacher. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Western Illinois university, Macomb. In previous experience regarding schools, she was a member of the Committee of Ten for the formation of a unit district and served on the Feasibility Study committee as member and secretary. Major Problems There are many potential problems in the re-organization of any school district. Unit District 12 faces a vast amount of detailed work associated with its formation-establishing a high school curriculum, planning a facility, hiring personnel, revising policies and procedures for expanded instructional services and budgetary planning. The effective date of the unit district may be delayed. The division of assets may not progress as rapidly or as smoothly as necessary for an ideal transition. Ideas For Meeting Them A good working relationship between District 156 and District 12 boards of education and administrations will be essential if either district is to turn these potential problems into opportunities for positive change. Both districts have many tasks to be accomplished, we must avoid unnecessary delays. Citizens and teachers have been instrumental in establishing the unit; through ad-hoc committies, we should now keep them informed and involved in these tasks. JOHN C. HE IDLER John C. Heidler, who lives at 5709 N. Woodland drive, McHenry, with his wife and two teen-age children, has filed for a position on the unit district board. Heidler is a chemical engineer and has earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Engineering as well as a M.B.A. degree. He was a member of the Long Range Planning committee for District 156 prior to formation of the Johnsburg unit district. He also serves as treasurer for Pistakee Highlands Community association. Major Problems The major problems are creation of a high school administration, design of a new building to create a proper plant for high school curriculum, building a curriculum that is cohesive with current junior high program and which will prepare graduates for progress in life, whether they are college bound or not. Ideas For Meeting Them My ideas for the solution of these problems are: 1- Establish the high school administration core; 2-Use this core to concurrently design curriculum and high school facility, recognizing that a high school plant has different requirements than the rest of the system; 3-Involve people from the community in committee work. STEVAN PETROV (No reply) ELMER F.PFLUG (No reply) JAMES W.PRESTON James W. Preston of 4301 Ringwood road, Wonder Lake, is seeking a seat on the new unit district board. He and his wife, Joan, and their five children, have lived in the area for sixteen years. Preston attended junior college for two years and is now plant manager of a food processing plant. Preston served on the Citizens Advisory committee for formulation of a unit district, was chairman of the Citizens Advisory committee to the school board of District 34, has served for two years as vice-president of the Johnsburg P.T.O. and is presently serving on the board of District 12. He is affiliated with the Johnsburg Parent-Teacher organization, Wonder Lake boys' baseball, the Optimist club and Nativity Lutheran church. Major Problems The major problem to be faced by Unit District 12 is to provide the facilities and educational programs for a K through 12 school system. The immediate problem is the formation of a functioning and working unit board, the negotiation with District 156 on the dissolution of funds, the planning of an educational program on the high school level, the purchase of land and the construction of a high school facility. Ideas For Meeting Them A great deal of the general information needed to solve the above problems is contained within the feasibility study conducted by citizens of District 12. The new unit board must continue to work with the citizens of our district, the present administration and staff and to search out leaders in the field of education. Based on the information received the board should implement an educational program to provide for the needs of our children from kindergarten through high school. GERALD M. SOBIESK Gerald M. Sobiesk of 5201 N. Beacon Hill drive, McHenry, has announced his candidacy as a member of Unit District 12. 1 He and his wife, Georgette, and their three children have lived in the area for ten years. Sobiesk, who attended St. Blase school in Argo and St. Rita high school in Chicago, served on the Committee of Ten for a unit district, was co-chairman of educational programs and worked on the committee of Feasibility Study. He is a member of McHenry Township Fire District 2 and is employed as a materials manager. Major Problems My main concerns in regard to the new unit district are: A- To insure continued quality education at the elementary level; and B-To maintain rapport and communication with District 156 in the best interest of all students and both school districts. Ideas For Meeting Them In instituting the new high school and its programs, to bear in mind the Feasibility Study's suggestions within the monies available. CRAIG A. SPENGEL Craig A. Spengel of 1314 W. Old Bay road, McHenry, has filed for a position on the unit district board. He lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Spengel, and his six brothers and Spengel is a 1971 graduate of McHenry Community high school and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1975. He is now employed as a meat packer. , . While in college, Spengel served as a grade school tutor tor- three years. Two of those years, he spent as coordinator tor the tutoring program which aided 500 children. Major Problems The unit district's major problems will concern the;shift in philosophy necessary to bring together a new high school and an existing elementary school system. Each problem wui have to be considered as it arises, taking all its factors into account. Ideas For Meeting Them 4^ Not being long removed from the educational process, I " ' be able to bring into the discussions what I considered the benefits and deficiencies of the various school systems in which I studied. BARBARA A. STANELL Mrs. Barbara A. Stanell of 1318 Old Bay road, McHenry, a member of the present board, is seeking reelection to the new- unit district board. A ten-year-resident of this area, she is a high school graduate and attended nursing school for three years. Her experience relating to schools includes four years on the Johnsburg board as well as serving on the board of SEDOM(Special Education District of McHenry County). Mrs. Stanell and her husband, Dr. Robert Stanell, have three children. Comments The establishment of Johnsburg's Unit District 12 will better enable the students to have a continuity of educational programs initiated at the primary level. This will also be in keeping with a closer control of our tax dollar within the = community. The unit district will aid in the development of a community spirit amongst parents, students and teachers. DON C. WOLF Don C. Wolf, his wife, Grace, and their four children, live at 3919 N. Blitsch place, McHenry. They have resided in the area for eighteen years. Wolf is a tool and die maker. He is a high school graduate and has earned a master certificate from the National Metal Trades association. Wolf was a member of Task Force One in District 156 and served as co-chairman of the educational program of the Feasibility Study for District 12. He has also served as a committee member of Troop 162, Boy Scouts of America, for six years. Major Problems I am concerned with providing for the best education for all our students, both elementary and those presently being educated in District 156. In order to meet these needs, we must maintain dialogue and cooperation with our present administration and also District 156. Ideas For Meeting Them I feel a responsibility to the people who supported the referendum to follow the ideas and plans brought out in the Feasibility Study. WfeVe dusted, scrubbed and baked.
