PAGE I - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, lt75 & u THE START found sixty-eight runners from ten schools ready to ascend the first incline of the tough 3 mile Veterans Acre cross country course. The conference championship was at stake for the Warriors as they had to beat the tough Mundelein team. It was a close ending as eight of the teams finished with over 100 points. When the final tally was in, it was McHenry 52. Mundelein fl. The Warrior cross country team had won its first conference title since 1969. McHenry had proved to be tougher than the course. "The Wednesday Bank" THE FIRST NATIONAL M BANK OF MCHENRY 3814 W. Elm St.,McHenry, 111 815-385-5400 SPORTS EDITOR--I We hope the Bears and Packers both come back strong. Those were the glory days in these parts when those two teams met in battle. There was a time When bologna was looked upon as a lowly item at the meat counter. Jnst look at the price of it today and you will get new respect for that once lowly item. We don't think the Good Lord planned for us to rake leaves in the fall. The plan was to let them fall to cover and fertilize grass, swirl in the wind to cover small bushes and act as a cover before heavy frost came along. Then, mere man had to come along and invent the rake. THE FINISH and a time of 16:19 for the 3 miles is good for a sixth place for Vince Linnane of McHenry. Just behind Vince is Andy Oakley who captured seventh place, 3 seconds later. Vince and Andy were the first two runners in for McHenry on the rugged Running Warriors Win North Suburban Cross Country Crown Veterans Acres course. The strong Warrior finish beat out Mundelein for the conference title 52-61. All other schools were above 100 points. (gTAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Is your furnace in good working order? Check it out before winter really sets in. A 'well-maintained furnace, with a clean filter, uses less fuel and saves you money. Working with the Bicen tennial committee, we are assigned the job of finding the oldest buildings in McHenry. If you can help, please give us a call. Soon, please. Baseball had the headlines last week. Now the big time sport pages are full of football. Each must take its turn. But, we can't wait for news that the American League has ap proved Bill Veeck's group as the new owners of the White Sox. It will be interesting to know if Veeck will keep Harry Caray as TV announcer. Or will he remember when he owned the St. Louis Browns and Caray was broadcaster for the Car dinals in the same city. Caray blasted Veeck pretty good in those days. Medical men are now getting concerned about a problem where people are falling asleep at any time. What else is new? Just put us in our big chair -- leaning back -- foot-rest up -- then let us read a newspaper for a short time-- We're off to slumberland. (Havealso been told we snore). They told us the Minnesota Vikings were the best pro team in the land. Also that the Chicago Bears were the worst team. So the Vikings eked out a 13-9 victory over the Bears Monday night. Somebody goofed when the Vikings were alert in running a quick pass play for a touch down when the Bears had only ten men on the field. An injured player had to leave the game, but his replacement didn't get in there in time to help. A MILE TO GO for Mike Burmann as he rounds a scenic bend of the 3 mile course. Mike finished ninth (third for McHenry) in a time of 16:39 in the Warrior win in the conference tourney. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) By Dick Rabbitt Dedication, hard work, and intestinal fortitude was the theme of the day as Coach Bill H u t c h i n s o n ' s " R u n n i n g Warriors" won the North Suburban Cross Country Crown at Crystal Lake on Tuesday. In d u a l m e e t c o m p e t i t i o n t h e Warriors trailed Mundelein who had a perfect 9 and 0 record to the Warrior 8 and 1. In order to win the conference championship, the Warriors had to win the meet. This was a must, Coach Hutchinson remarked to his squad just prior to the gun. It was a thrilling race and the Warriors did not let their coach down as one by one they passed opponents to insure the victory. Sophomore Vince Linanne led the Warriors when he placed 6th, followed closely by Andy Oakley in the 7th spot. Another s o p h o m o r e M i k e B u r m a n placed 9th.
