On The Sidelines by Dick Rabbltt Congratulations are in order to Coaches Bill Hutchinson and Earl Kyle and the McHenry High School cross country team. All they did was win the North Suburban Conference Championship Tuesday afternoon at Crystal Lake. The long summer hours, the hot weather, the many many miles of running finally paid off. It was truly a team effort and a stunned Coach Hutchinson remarked after the meet, "It was simply great", It was no fluke, they had to fight off a determined bunch of runners from Mundelein. To Andy Oakley, Vince Linnane, Mike Burman, Fred and Greg O'Halleran, Jerry Pepping and Ron Himplemann and the rest of the squad bask in the glory fellows, from one who saw the meet you deserve all the honors and glory that you can get. You deserve it. The faithful followers were in full force. Mr. & Mrs. Art Oakley, JoAnn Hutchinson, Clint Claypool, Dave Luckett, Mrs. O'Halleran, and the former coach Don Sea ton. Along with the many students who attend every meet, this group was just a happy bunch of people in Crystal Lake on Tuesday. The Warriors close out the season tomorrow at Zion. Since the ZeeBee loss to Lake Forest three weeks ago, they have been sputtering in every game. Although the ZeeBees are favorite in this game, I look for the Warriors to go all out for a win. Let's all get over to Zion Saturday and root the Warriors to a victory. Playoff time is just around the corner. On Saturday night the I.H.S.A. will name the teams for the State Playoffs. The method of choosing teams has already been determined. Any conference champion is an automatic choice. In Class 4-A in which the North Suburban plays, sixteen teams will be chosen. After each of the 13 conference teams in this division are picked, three more will be chosen from an at large status. An at large team can consist of: 1. any independent team in the division: 2. a conference co-champ, and 3. a conference runnerup provided the team has an 800 percentage in games won and lost. In the Class 4-A there are 13 conferences represented. The North Suburban, Northwest Suburban, DuPage Valley, O'Hare Suburban, Illini Eight, S.I.C.A. East, S.I.C.A. South, North Central 111. Northwest division, Midstate Nine, Big Twelve, Capitol, Mississippi Valley, and the South Seven. The North Suburban is the largest of these conference with average enrollment. The South Seven, with Benton, Mt. Vernon etc. is the smallest. Class 4-A enrollment is between 989 and 1,956, and the North Suburban averages 1,956. The first round games will be played on Wednesday Nov. 5th, and the Quarter Finals on Saturday Nov. 8th. Semi-Finals are scheduled for Saturday Nov. 15th, with the Finals at I.S.U. on Saturday, Nov. 22nd. The North Suburban representative will be a host school for a first round game. In talking with Bill Blankenhorn, the McHenry High Athletic Director, he came up with a remote possibility. There could be a three way tie in the North Suburban conference. McHenry beat Zion Benton, Barrington beats Crystal Lake, and either the winner of the Lake Forest vs. Libertyville game. If Libertyville, Zion, and Barrington tie, then Zion would be an automatic choice, for having beaten the other two teams. The best is yet to come. If Lake Forest beats Libertyville. Zion defeated Barrington, but lost to Lake Forest. Lake Forest beat Zion, but lost to Barrington. Barrington beat Lake Forest, but lost to Zion. Take a look at the standings and make your own conclusions on how the A.D.'s would select a conference representative. Because if a tie does occur that is just what they will do on Sunday morning. How would you like to attend that kind of a meeting on a Sunday morning, trying to pick a team out of three to represent your conference in the playoffs. I would like to see it happen, just to see how the Athletic Directors would vote. I have my choice, and if my team isn't picked I'll let you know about it. f rostln Special (THRU NOV. 22) $ 00 REG. The Warriors are in sixth place with a 4 and 4 record. Zion stands at 7 and 1 in the conference standings. Coach Leroy Cliff of the ZeeBees has 18 lettermen returning from last years second place team. Early in the season he was worried that replacements would not fill the gap left by graduation, but at this time the ZeeBees only loss was to Lake Forest 35 to 14. John Stockton a 6'0" 170 quarterback leads the Zion pro- set offense. Halfback Scott Roe who doubles as middle linebacker, and also set a record for P. A T. last season is another of the backfield mainstays in the ZeeBee at tack. Terry Berg a 6'1" 200 lb. fullback who not only runs with power but added speed for a big fellow is another treat to the Warriors. Ends who are the favorite target of Stockton's passes are Dave Mapes and Kevin Robinson. The interior of the line consists of 6'3" 225 Mark Markobrad, and 6'1" 200 lb. Mike Jaworek both lettermen from last year squad. In ad* dition 6'2" 205 junior Pete Buffer and 6'0" 225 lb. Larry Lawler along with 6'2" 245 lb. Jim Heenan. However in the past several weeks the ZeeBees have been sputtering, although winning, have not looked too impressive. Remember the old saying "you can't look too bad and win", may be the ZeeBee story. The Warriors put over 200 yards in rushing last week against Lake Forest. If they can add a little variety to their passing attack they may have a few suprises for the ZeeBees. Brian Nuss had a great night rushing for 199 yards, and if the offensive line will continue to block like they did Friday night, and the defense stays healthy, the Warriors could give the ZeeBees all they can handle. The game will be played at the new Horizon Campus, which if off Rt. 173 at Kenosha Road in Zion. The crystal ball will have to come up with some tough ones this week in the North Suburban. All games look to be world beaters. So far I'm 31 and 9 for the season. I'll pick the ZeeBees over the Warriors, although if the Warriors come to play it could Harriers Defeat North Chicago THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF MCHENRY 3814 W. Mundelein over Crown, the Vikings will lose number 9 for the season. Being defensive minded I'll pick the Wildcats over Lake Forest, although I think Lake Forest is the best team in the conference at the present moment. .Dundee over North Chicago, it should be a whale of a game, the Warhawks gave the ZeeBees all they could handle last week. Barrington over Crystal Lake in a real close game. Barrington for once is going into the game with a lot of injuries, and the Tigers always rise "to the occasion against the Broncos.
