Blindness Rivals Cancer As Fear Of Mankind Cancer may be one of mankind's greatest fears, but blindness is close on its heels, according to the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Fortunately, says the society, you can do something about your sight, since one-half of all % blindness is preventable, it's as simple as a visit to your eye doctor every other year. Or a little common sense about •protecting your vision. As a starter, the Illinois society offers these five "common sense" suggestions when it comes to protecting and preserving your vision: (1) If a chemical is splashed into the eye, immediately flush the eye repeatedly with tap water, then call a physician at once. (2) To remove a speck of dirt "btHer foreign material from the eye, lift the upper lid and pull it gently down over the loWer lid, allowing tears to ; wash out the speck. Or flush the - eye with lukewarm water. If these remedies fail, consult a physician immediately. (3) Always consider the need for medical attention when injury to the eye occurs. Any injury could be dangerous and might lead blindness. (4) Persistent irritations should be the concern of a physician. (5) When buying eyeglasses, always ask for safety lenses. In these instances, consumers have an obligation to themselves--and to others as well-to complain. By complaining effectively, the consumer makes it more dif ficult for the unethical manufacturer and retailer to do business. At the same time, as well . registered complaint helps the legitimate manufacturer and business person better serve the individual consumer and the general public. Legitimate businesses usually want to . know when and in what way Y their products have failed to > satisfy their customers. If you have a complaint, the first thing you should do is march right back to the person who sold you the unsatisfactory goods or services. Gather together your receipts, con tracts, product labels, can celled checks and any other pertinent documents to take* with you. Tell the retailer your complaint and the corrective ^ action you want him to take. If you don't get any action after this step, contact the manager or president of the company. State your specific complaint in simple terms and remember to include copies of all relevant documents. Be sure to identify the retailer from whom the product or service was purchased. Many large companies also have their own customer service departments to which you can direct complaints. Find out about this from the store where you bought the product. If, after these steps, you are still unable to resolve your complaint satisfactorily, let us help. ^ Write Celia Maloney, Con sumer Advocate, State of Illinois, 160 N. Dairy Cows Enjoy High Moisture Corn Higlrnnoisture corn is an excellent feed for dairy cows, but pound for pound, it is not quite as good as dry corn, says George Young~ University of Illinois Extension adviser, in McHenry county. Because it contains more water, certain allowances should be made when feeding high-moisture corn to milking cows. As a substitute for dry corn in dairy rations, more high-moisture corn is needed to obtain the same energy, protein and mineral intake levels. It takes about 1.13 pounds of good quality corn at 25-percent moisture to equal one pound of 15-percent moisture corn. The amount of 30-percent moisture corn needed to equal one pound of dry corn is about 1.21 pounds. Arid 1.31 pounds of 35-percent moisture corn are needed to equal one pound of dry corn, adds Young. Assume a grain mixture recommended or being fed contains 800 pounds of dry shelled corn, 180 pounds of a protein supplement, 10 pounds of mineral supplement and 10 pounds of salt. How much 30- percent mositure corn is needed in the 1,000 pound grain mixtures and how much of that mixture should be fed to the cows? To determine the amount of 30-percent moisture corn to mix with the other ingredients, multiply 800 by 1.21 (800 x 1.21 equals 968). The total mixture then should weigh 1,168 pounds, says Young. The recommended feeding rate of the mixture is obtained by dividing the total weight of the new mixture (1,168 pounds) by the weight of the old mixture (1,000 pounds) and multiplying the result by 10Q. The rate computed is 117 percent of the dry corn mixture fed. If 20 pounds of the dry corn mixture were recommended or fed, it would now take 23.4 pounds of the high-moisture corn mixture to produce the same amount of milk (20 x 117 percent equals 23.4).
