FIRE IN GARAGE - A fire at Payton Chevrolet. 908 N. Front street, last Wednesday morning about 10:30 resulted in much smoke but no damage. Mechanics had been working on a van, changing an inline gas filter, when some of the gasoline spilled onto a drop cord under the van. The light bulb exploded and ignited the gasoline. Company I was called to extinguish the fire. Friday morning about 12:10 a.m., Company I responded to the report of a furnace fire at the Stanley Demski home, 3614 W. John street. Investigation revealed there was no fire but the malfunction of steam control valve. THE NETWORKS have only an eleven per cent suc­ cess record this season. The season began with 27 new programs. Only CBS's "Phyllis," NBC's "Joe Forrester," and ABC's "Starsky and Hutch" seem to be winners. BOTH CBS AND NBC have canceled four shows. Others have their head on the block and will probably find themselves missing before too long. ABC still has not dropped any shows, but "Barbary Coast" and "Mobile One" are definite­ ly on the firing line. THOSE shows on CBS's scratch list are: "Beacon Hill," "Kate McShane." "Three for the Road," and "Big Eddie." NBC's con­ tribution to the losing col­ umn include: "Fay," "The Montefuscos," "The Fam­ ily Holvak," and "The In­ visible Man." THERE HAS BEEN some indication as to what shows will replace the above list­ ed losers. CBS's "60 Mi­ nutes" will bump "Three for the Road" in December. Other replacements will be published as they are an­ nounced by the networks. STARTING in January, twenty-eight segments of "David Nivans WorfW" will be seen on some stations. WWl. Political JOHN B. An­ derson has announced that he will run for a ninth term in Area Artists Will Bxhlblt At 'Art Falre' Unique and unusual hand­ crafted items will be found at the "Holly Daze Art Faire" being held in Rockford Dec. 6,9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Dec. 7, 11 a.m. to6p.m. Over sixty artists will be exhibiting and selling at the indoor fair, including Donald Leland Brown and John A. Burr from McHenry. Items such as silver jewelry, stoneware pottery, planters, wall hangings, crocheted clothing items, wooden toys, and homemade baked goods will delight the senses, as well as the pocketbook. The Faire is located on the downtown mall, 315 W. State, on the three floors of the old Owens store. The Congress, and called for "a new realism on the part of both politicians and voters." The Rockford Republican, who has represented Illinois' 16th Congressional district since 19til, said he will be filing for the G.O.P. nomination before Dec. 15. Faire will also feature en­ tertainment by the Auburn Chorus, Faculty and Friends; movies for children; and a Christmas clown. A "Coffee Klatch" area will occupy the messanine. Empire style dresses for evening seem to be in the news for the coming sea­ son. Many are shown with straps over the shoulders and free flowing skirts of soft materials. The short dress for so­ cial evening affairs is back in style. The wearer may take her choice--short or long--unless the occasion is very formal. In that case the long dress should be preferred.
