(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE G A YLORD) Warrior Cagers Win Consolation Title In King Korn Tournament By Dick Rabbitt After an opening game loss to West Aurora, the Warriors came roaring back and won the consolation championship in the King Korn Tourney at Sycamore. They defeated DeKalb 85 to 72 in the cham pionship game. On Friday afternoon the Warriors were matched up with West Aurora in a game that many felt would decide the championship. They were right as the Blackhawks won their sixth tourney championship in a row. The Warriors started out like a house afire, with a tenacious defense and accuracy from the field they broke out to a 16 to 12 first quarter lead over the taller Blackhawks. With the press still in effect and the Blackhawks making numerous turnovers the Warriors con tinued the onslaught. Decker's basket at the 2:15 mark put the Warrior ahead 26 to 19 for their biggest lead. Ludwig's basket at the horn put the Warriors ahead 28 to 23 at the in termission. Then the game did a com plete turnaround. The Blackhawks began going to the boards, their defense forced Warrior turnovers, and the Warriors couldn't buy a basket. As a result the Warriors managed one basket and three free throws during the period and trailed 40 to 33. The final period was more of the same and the Warriors went down to a 58 to 45 defeat. Tommy Ludwig's 17 pts. led the locals in the scoring column. OVERPOWER KANELAND On Saturday morning the Warriors got into high gear and defeated Kaneland 70 to 56. With Koerber hitting from underneath, and Ludwig and Reilly hitting from the outside the Warriors were never in trouble. Brett Decker muscled his way for 4 baskets and looks as if he will be a great addition to the Warriors. Brian Lund and Doug Hertel along with Tony Christy and Don Rode all scored for the Warriors. THUMP BARBS In the consolation final Saturday afternoon, the Warriors came to play. Holding a 17 to 13 margin at the end of the initial period, the Warriors literally ran the Barbs out of the gym during the second period as they scored 26 pts. and built up a 43 to 25 halftime bulge. During this period the Warrior fastbreak was working to perfection as time and time again they caught the Barbs flatfooted. In the third period the Barbs staged a rally and outscored the Warriors 20 to 15. Leading by 13 pts. the Warriors threw defense to the winds and again started running and shooting, racking up 27 points in the process and won easy 85 to 72. The "big fellow" Steve Koerber hit for 10 baskets and 13 out of 16 from the line to lead all scorers with 33 points. Ludwig had 13 and Reilly 14. Coach Ludwig was quite pleased with his Warriors. He said "We got the chance to play three games" and also com mented "I believe we now have the confidence we need for the future". He was quite pleased with Rode, Decker, Christy and Brian Miller, who came off the bench when needed Coach Ludwig felt that the team played better as the games progressed, although they were a tired group of boys Saturday afternoon when it was all over. The two day, three game tourney will help to get the Warriors in shape for those weekend doubleheaders that will be coming up starting next weekend. Tom was honored as the MVP and Paul was awarded best defensive player. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAY1X)RD) "EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR--I Warrior Football Squads Honored At Awards Dinner Picky Eater Then there's the person who or ders two eggs. "Don't fry them a second after the white is cooked. Don't turn them over. Not too much grease, just a pinch'of salt, no pepper. Well, waitress, what are you waiting for?" The waitress could only reply: "The hen's name is Gertrude, if that's alright with you!" Kids were mighty excited to see the first snow. In the old days in McHenry, you could slide down a hill on any street. No cars. No sand. With the temperature below 20 degrees and many inches of. snow, we happened to look at the calendar and learned that winter begins Mon., Dec. 22. Something we would never know without a calendar. One report claims that 9 men died in Chicago from snow shoveling and pushing cars. Let that be a lesson, men. If you are in that over-the-hill age bracket, be sure to show all those items to your wife. It works. Take it from one who hasn't been allowed to touch a snow shovel in years. Sitting here watching a singer who closes his eyes tightly and opens his mouth real wide. For our part, he could reverse the action. Listened to both radio and TV announcers alibi for Chicago Vocational in their Chicago championship football game. Those Vocational kids don't need an alibi. All they need is 20 additional pounds per man. The Brother Rice team is BIG -- AND GOOD. Joe Podpora phoned to tell us Ron Miller's name was prominent in the CCIW final football statistics. Sure enough -- Ron was at the top in quarterbacking his Elmhurst team. In total of fense, Ron passed for 1,172 yards and rushed for an ad ditional 143 for an average of 187.8. That's covering a lot of ground. In passing, Ron attempted 186 and completed 101 with only 14 intercepted. Congratulations to our for mer MCHS athlete, a man possessed with a great desi# and a big heart. Christmas SPECIALS Here is your Christmas Bonus ST0REWIDE SALE 20% OFF Tom Hanahan, represen tative in the Gneral Assembly, State of Illinois, has prepared a House Resolution concerning the use of state parks. Tom takes to task the Department of Conservation, pointing out allegations that citizens have been denied use of parks for such recreation as snowmobiling. Horsemen groups and others are also said to have been denied use of park space in spite of agreeing to abide by all rules and regulations. Horseback riding is great sport, but cannot be enjoyed on busy streets and highways. Snowmobiling sometimes turns us off, but if we were young it would probably have great appeal. It will be interesting to see what action will be taken on Tom's resolution. Let's mark our calendars for a least six months ahead. Just thinking. When a fellow reaches a certain age, he is apt to tell the same stories or yarns over and over. Lucky if he can find a dif ferent audience each time. Probably have told you about the family doctor who came to our parents' house when kids were considered sick enough to call him. After sticking out your tongue and saying ah - h-h- h--, he poured out the same little pink pills for every ailment. The home treatment was castor oil. It was mixed in orange juice. Must have been 30 years old before we could stand orange juice -even if it was straight. Sitting in our car in a parking lot, window partly open and radio bringing in a football game, a lady passing by asked, "Are you listening to a Cub game?" None other than Bob Blake's wife. It figures. • • * * Your church is still open every Sunday, if you haven't noticed. By Dick Rabbitt The football squads at McHenry High School were honored at a pot-luck dinner last Tuesday evening. After the meal the players were honored by their respective coaches. Coaches Wally Scott, Brian Wilson and Marty Sobczak gave put the freshmen numerals. Coaches El Par- tenheimer and Dan Boland presented awards to the sophomores, and Head Coach Bill. Day and his assistants Ken Swanson, Toby Scott and Ken' Ludwig gave out the varsity awards. Paul O'Malley was selected by his teammates as the best defensive player, and the coveted award the Most Valuable Player also selected by the team was awarded to Tommy Ludwig. One hundred and twenty-eight awards were given to the football squad which numbered the largest squad in many a year.
