Origin Of The Christmas Tree There are many legends concerning the origin of the Christmas tree. We know it is used in almost every country but it is not always an evergreen tree like the one used in America. It is believed by some that the first Christmas tree was a Palm tree brought from Egypt. The twelve parts of the palm signified the twelve apostles. The use of the Pine and Cedar for Christmas trees is generally believed to be of German origin. Perhaps the honor should go to Martin Luther. There is a legend that on one Christmas Eve, Luther was walking through a Pine forest, he was inspired by the sight of thousands of stars twinkling through the branches of the trees. When he arrived home, he cut down a Fir tree and covered it with small candles so that his children might know what the heavens were like. The Pine Christmas tree was introduced in England when Victoria married the German Prince Albert. Victoria, always wishing to please her husband, commanded a green tree be brought to the palace each year to be decorated as it might have been in Albert's homeland. The tradition of a decorated Christmas tree in the United States may date back to the Revolutionary war, when homesick Hession troops cut and decorated fir trees as was their German custom. "TICKETS AT THE DOOR"i Marian Central Holds Eighth Grade Visitation Wonder Lake; McHenry Junior high and Parkland in McHenry, and the junior high classes of Johnsburg and Spring Grove. Heading the recruitment program at Marian Central is Robert Gough, and inquiries related to this program should be directed to him at the school. Three important dates for eighth graders and parents to be aware of are the High School Placement test Jan. 11, Junior High Activity night Jan. 23, and freshmen registration Sunday, Feb. 15. During the month of November, over 500 eighth grade students from McHenry county spent a day at Marian Central Catholic high school as part of the high school Ar ticulation program. Seventeen junior high schools participated by allowing interested students to attend the visitation program at Marian. The purpose of the visitation program was to allow the eighth graders to experience a high school day and to view classes in session and other activities of the high school "in action". The junior high students travelled in pairs with a guide from the Marian fresh men class. They attended the regular classes of their guide and also had the opportunity to visit electives of their choice. All visitors gathered in the afternoon for a general presentation of Marian's programs. At this time various speakers, including students, coaches, counselors and teachers, discussed Marian and answered any questions regarding its programs. , Junior high )schools par ticipating in- the program in cluded Montini, McHenry; St. John's, Johnsburg; Harrison, Holiday Hours Christmas Eve 4 TO 9 P.M.
