Young children can cut and paste while older ones write the appropriate greetings. On Christmas Day: Involve children in the dinner preparations: performing simple cooking jobs, setting the table, helping to serve". After dinner is an ideal time for an informal Talent Show or family skit. Holiday At Home...Christ mas. Take a load off Santa - have the kids do the work. In the hectic Christmas rush, many parents forget the best educational present they can give their children is simply to allow and encourage them to take an active part in the family preparations for the holiday season. Here are some easy-on- parent, possible before- Christmas, ways to turn young children, even pre-schoolers, into active participants instead of passive spectators in the holiday doings. Gifts: Children should learn to give as well as receive. They can be encouraged to buy their own purchases at the store and- or make gifts at home. Even pre-schoolers can go to the store with you and pick out dime items for other members of the, family and;carry them home to wrap themselves. Older youngsters enjoy wrapping their presents in imaginative, mysterious ways, such as putting a small thing in an enormous box, etc. Home-made presents that can be produced by the very young include jewelry by stringing shells or colored macaroni; baking and decorating cookies; making paintings and collages for framing. Older elementary children can do embroidery, design games, write poems and stories for gifts, decorate trays, etc. Decorations: Christmas is an arts and crafts delight, and children are the best makers of imagaintive tree ornaments and house decor. For the tree, there are chains of berries and paper rings, snowflake cut outs, paper bells glistening with glitter, soda bottle tops covered with foil, and Santa faces of red paper and cotton. For the house, children can design festive table placemats, centerpieces of painted pine branches* window wreaths of largfe green paper circles, adorned with small red circles of berries. Making Greetings Cards: Any age can make them: all you need are colored paper, m e r i c a n V i e w p o i n t s Through unity of action we can be a veritable colossus in support of peace.
