MARGARET O'NEIL Clerk of the Court (Pub. Fri., Dec. 26,1975 & Jan. 2-9,1976) Legal Notice Plant Life Most Useful Natural -- Energy Conserver Americans have often been described as people who regard nature as a "mother" who. scooping from the depths of a bottomless reservoir, un failingly pours out riches upon her insatiable children Today we. ^the children, are "or phans." someone has suggested, because there no longer exists a boundless "mother" who beckons to our every need. We are* so to speak, on our own and we must make do with the resources at hand if we are to survive. If the image is apt. it is especially so in regard to our use of fossil fuels -coal, oil, gas whose limited and irreplaceable supplies we are ^consuming at an ever- increasing rate. Fortunately, however, there are other resources in nature available to us which can be our allies in conserving the exhaustible energy supplies The most useful of these resources is one which is available in almost unlimited quantity, providing we are prudent and patient stewards of • i t . That resource, of course, is plant life - especially trees, shrubs and vines. According to the American Association of Nurserymen, these abundant gifts of nature are among the most effective energy con- servers at our disposal. Take heat conservation, for example. Tests conducted in South Dakota demonstrated that a house bordered on the north, east and west sides by trees which functioned as windbreaks consumed 40 percent less fuel than a fully exposed house -- a truly remarkable savings. A related discovery is that a hedge or tree windbreak is far more effective than a solid wall of masonry or wood. This surprising fact was proven in tests which showed that the solid wall lifts the wind up over itself and causes turbulence on the lee side, whereas the shrubs let enough wind pass through to dissipate the force of the down draft. Conserving air conditioning energy is another important function plant Itfe can perform One need only walk into a forest on a hot day to realize that trees are nature's air conditioners Properly shaded houses hive less need for costly air conditioning Even where air conditioners have been stalled, they need work only half as much to do their job in a shaded house in comparison to one on which the sun beats down unimpeded upon walls and 'roof. Differences of 8 degrees F have been recorded between shaded and unshaded outdoor surfaces. The best shade trees are the deciduous ones whose leaves appear in spring in time for the hot season and are shed before winter so that the sun can get through to aid in heating the house. For most effective cooling, trees should be planted' on the south and west sides of the house For cooling effect >n summer, deciduous vines' are another useful insulator. Among the best are such species as Boston ivy and Virginia creeper whose broad leaves intercept the sun's rays, while behind them a current carries the warm air up and away from the wall. Those, vines grown on south and west walls bring maximum cooling results. For winter heat in sulation, English ivy, whose leaves are not shed, is a good specie and should be grown on the north wall. Vines can be grown safely on brick walls but are destructive to frame buildings because the vines tend to hold moisture in favoring rot. However, a cooling effect can be obtained by twining vines like wisteria or climbing roses on trellises which are attached to the house. i For advice on the best plants to install in -your yard, consult your local nursery garden center They can suggest the proper greenery to" enable you to effect long range economic savings and, at the same time, aid in conserving our world's precious energy resources. Howlett today reminded all applicants to present their pre print renewal forms when they purchase 1976 license plates. "This form, which we mailed last summer, proves ownership and will speed up over-the- counter license sales." Howlett said "Without this, the ap plicant must request a duplicate from our Springfield office before a license may be issued." » Howlett pointed out that mailing of 1976 license plates is far ahead of last year at this time. "Almost all„ of the reassignment requests have been mailed and thousands of the 285,000 special passenger number requests are being processed daily," he explained "All of these, in addition to motorcycle and RV realignments, will be mailed before Christmas. *• 9 • • It's easy to underesti mate the jealousy of lazy people. 3 THB MCHENRY PUINDULU 3812 W«M Elm Strsst Published Every f*om 3M4170 ft Prlfey at MeHanry, IN too* totals PSM at MeHanry, IMinota By McHENRY PUBLISHING COMPANY Larry E.
