Department of Illinois, opened a small non-profit shop in Chicago's Loop area, known as Veteran's Craft Exchange. This was managed by a disabled veteran, assisted by volunteer auxiliary members. Its purpose was to aid disabled veterans in disposing of the handicraft made by themselves or their dependents. The shop opened with ninetv exhibitors. Today they number approximately 3(H) from thirly- six states. This has necessitated moving to a larger. more attractive quarters. Among the most popular of the items displayed are the rugs woven by the blind veterans The materials used lor the rugs are prepared by v w \ \ \ I Cynthia Nell Is Honored At Bridal Showers Cynthia Nell was recently honored at two bridal showers. The first, a kitchen shower, was hosted, by her sisters, ^Jessica and Beth Nell, held in their home. A buffet lunch was served. Oil Sunday, Dec. 28, a sur prise miscellaneous shower was held jn the Oeffling home, with Julia Oeffling and Colleen Conway as hostesses. A salad luncheon was served. Cindy will become the bride of Phil Oeffling Jan. 31, 1976. Town-Country Newcomers Club Installation The McHenry Town and Country Newcomers club will meet Tuesday. Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m., at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, when in stallation of new officers and a business meeting will be held. The club held a cookie ex change recently aHhe^home of Mrs. Steven Bofcemeier, with twenty people attending. A children's Christmas party also was held, with twenty children present. The club is for newcomers to the McHenry area. Anyone wishing more information about the club should call Mrs. Warren Frederick. Santa Helpers Strike Again For the second year the women of the Wonder Lake volunteer fireman's auxiliary for Company I declined to exchange grab gifts with each other. Instead, the money was collected and matched by the auxiliary treasury, and checks and gifts were either delivered or mailed to individuals and families who the auxiliary thought might appreciate a little extra cheer from Santa's helpers. Members were grateful to the many people not connected with the auxiliary who took it upon themselves to join in this very rewarding annual project. The auxiliary held its Christmas fellowship dinner this year at the Mill Inn located in Wonder Lake. Everyone enjoyed the joyful spirit of the season through the singing of- favorite songs and Christmas carols. The new year for the auxiliary starts with the first meeting Tuesday. Jan. 20 at the __ Company I firehouse located on the east side of the lake. Some 100 members and guests square danced, with both the club's regular callers on hand for the festivities. Buf the feature of the evening was announced by Virginia Hem pel, who rearranged the usual nightclub M.C's words, saying. "The Woodshed Whirlers "go to no expense to bring you the best in en tertainment, and this year you will be entertained by a sultan and the dancing feirls from his harem." / Many remarked how much the corpulent "sultan" resembled member Ed Winn, and others thought the dancing "girls'" were quite, Amazonian. Their diaphanous pantaloons and veils revealed hirsute legs and torsos and at least two even had mustaches. Even so. their dance around their "sultan" received loud acclajm. At the stroke of midnight there was old man 1975 com plete with long gray beard, mop-like white hair and his scythe. Then in bounced Baby 1976, a strapping 240-pounder clad in his diaper. A sumptuous buffet dinner and more square dancing topped off the evening and early morning hours.
