He thrilled as Notre Dame squeaked by Alabama 13-11 in a game that wasn't easy on the blood pressure. It was Coach Ara Paresghian's last game at Notre Dame, What a way to go! He could imagine Meanderin' Mary jumping up and down with glee when Southern California edged Ohio State 18- 17 in the Rose Bowl game. Somebody sent; Lawrence Welk one of S.I.H. columns that mentioned him, so Welk sent him a letter thanking him. And it wasn't a rubber stamp signature. He wondered if Arnold Rauen or Clyde Black- well had something to do with it. With Marian's gym filled to an overflow crowd of McHenry fans on both sides of the floor, the Fighting Warriors won a hard fought game 62-53. The Sophomore team split a pair of games, losing to Mundelein, 40 to 38, and defeating Marian Central, 54 to 35. -The Warriors remained one game behind Zion and Liber­ tyville in the North Suburban league as they defeated Mundelein, 94 to 55. Buffalo Grove beat McHenry swimmers, 96-72. McHenry high wrestlers downed Cary Grove and lost to Mundelein. The McHenry Freshmen lost to Mundelein 70 to 48. They defeated McHenry, 44 to 37. Warriors overpowered Barrington 78 39. They also edged Dundee on Stark's clutch free throws, 72-66. Freshmen wrestlers won Mundelein and Woodstock matches. Varsity Wrestlers lost to Woodstock, but the Sophomores won. A strong Dundee wrestling team beat McHenry, 40 to 12. The Sophomore cagers split a pair, of games bowing to Dundee. 49-36, and defeating Barrington. 71-57. West Aurora Wim team was victorious over MCHS, 109-58. The "Rassling" Warriors split in a double dual meet They lost to Harvard 28 to 12. but defeated Harlem of Rock­ ford, 36-12. FEBRUARY Warriors routed Cards. 101- 67. to ring up the 100th win for their coach. Ken Ludwig The McHenry Sophomores were defeated by Barrington, 47-36. Then they edged Dundee in a thriller, 56-54. Three Warrior wrestlers advanced to the sectional tourney at Rockford, Ken Scanlin, Steve Lane and Bob Eppel. The Warriors won their eighteenth game of the season and ninth in conference play as they defeated Barrington, 47 to 44. Bill Moerschbaecher poured in 26 points to lead Marian Central to a 82-48 victory over St. Francis in a West Suburban Catholic conference game. Ken S&nlin qualified for the state finals in Champaign. Ken has 25 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties. The Warriors hit another milestone when they won their twentieth game of the season by defeating Crown, 70 to 61. It was the first 20 game season for Coach Ken Ludwig as Warrior coach, and only the second time in history of the school that a McHenry team has won 20 games in a season. The other was in 1958-59 when Cliff Fulton's five won the North Suburban Conference. Marian Central defeated Huntley, 83 to 61, in the first game of the Class A regional basketball tournament. Bill Moerschbaecher and Sam Anderson from McHenry had the hot hands for Marian. MARCH C.B. Claypool and George A. Hoffman, Jr., won angling recognition in the Metropolitan Miami Fishing tournament when each caught a 15 lbs., snapper in the general division. The Warriors closed out the regular season play by defeating Crystal Lake, 63 to 52. It was their twenty-first win oi the season. The Sophomore cagers closed out their season on a winning note by defeating Crystal Lake, 55 to 48. Steve Koerber and Marty Zeller were named to the North Suburban All Conference team Koerber was an unanimous selection of the coaches. The West Suburban Catholic All-Conference basketball teams lists two local boys who have been great performers on the Marian Central team this year, Sam Anderson and Bill Moerschbaecher The McHenry high school "Fighting Warriors" showed why they were picked in the number one spot in the regional as they defeated Hononegah of Rockton. 94 to 37. at the Belvidere tourney. The Johnsburg Wildcats captured the Fox Valley con­ ference tournament for the meet. Steve Kasprzyk was named most valuable player at the annual awards night. Steve Koerber received the annual Coca-Cola award. Other awards were given to Kenne Ludwig for best free throw percentage; Marty Zeller and Steve Koerber, all conference. Rick Swanson, former McHenry high school swim­ ming star, finished second in the National N.C.A.A. division II swimming meet in two events. The high school tennis team opened the 1975 season with a win over Lake Zurich, 5-0 The Warriors opened their long awaited baseball season with a double win over visiting Lake Forest, 4 to 0 and 8 to 4. The Sophomores dropped a twin bill to the Lake, Forest Sophomores, 8 to 0 and 6 to 2. The MCHS Thinclads placed fifth in the Oswego Relays. The high school tennis team went down to defeat by a score of 5 to 0 at the hands of Libertyville. Warriors won their third game with a 12 to 3 win over the Dundee Cardunals. The Fresh­ men team split a pair of games when they lost to Crystal Lake 8 to 7 and defeated Dundee 14 to 4. The Sophomores defeated Crystal Lake 2 to 0 and then lost to Dundee 9 to 4. McHenry's tennis squad captured championsips in five of the six singles classifications and won second place in the remaining contest in the Rock­ ford Jefferson quadrangular meet at Rockford. After racking up six straight \pis, the Warriors finally went down to defeat against Mun­ delein, 8 to 6. The Warriors won the first game by the same score. Earlier the^ Warriors defeated WoodstockTs to 4, and Cary Grove, 10 to 7. The Sophomore team dropped a doubleheadef to Mundelein, 6 to 1 and 14 to 4. In a display of power and depth, Coach Wally Scott's McHenry high track team easily defeated North Chicago and Barrington in a track meet at North Chicago. McHenry won the second quad tennis tourney, defeating Crown, Oswego and Marian Central. The team dropped a 5 to 0 match to powerful Barrington, and then defeated Woodstock, 5 to 4. The Warrior baseball team came from behind to defeat the BarringtolTBroncos 4 to 3. Thetrack team ran its way to a triangular win over Antioch and Waven. For the second time in 2 years, the Plaindealer photographer, Wayne Gaylord, was on the winning bowling te4m. The Kaneland Knights repeated as relay champions when they won their fifth straight McHenry crown. Bill George, former Chicago Bear, attended the Bronco Warrior baseball game at McCracken Field where his son, Leo, was playing first base for Barrington. McHenry's Frosh-Soph tennis squad won the first annual tennis tourney. Coach Toby Scott's boys won first and second places in both singles and doubles. They also defeated Stevenson, 5 to 0, and Crown, 4 to 1. The Freshmen baseball team was victorious twice over Lake Forest. 10 to 0, in five innings and 9 to 6 in the nightcap Gary Gilpin, a senior at Marian Central high school, set a new record in the shot put with a toss qf 52 feet 10 inches at the Bishop O'Neill Relays at Marmion academy. Kenne Ludwig was named recipient of the Gary Vogt Memorial award at the Senior Tribute at West Cam­ pus. He had the highest scholastic rank and earned his Major letter in at least two sports during his senior year, f Steve Kasprzyk was named the Athlete-of-the-year. This award goes to the graduating senior who has earned his major letter in at least two sports during his senior year and is voted most valuable by the coaching staff. Randy McCafferty received the most valuable award for baseball. Terry Reilly was voted most valuable award for tennis, with a season record of twenty-one victories against only seven losses. Montini Middle school held its annual sports banquet More than one hundred students received awards for their participation in the school interscholastic athletic program for the year 1974-75 Marty Zeller was accepted at New Mexio Military Institute. « Shamrocks joined the Shoreline league More than 3,200 McHenry county bowlers have helped provide a $400 contribution to Pioneer Center through the McHenry County Bowling Proprietors association. JULY In the finals of the Directors' tournament played at the McHenry Country club Gary Adams defeated Art Jackson on the 18th hole in Flight 1. Flight 2 winner was John Steinbach over Dick Freund. Tom Burke birdied the seventeenth and eighteenth holes to win one up over Fred Ballstaedt in Flight 3.* * Lakeview won the first place trophy and Apple Inn took second place in the Men's 16" tournament.
