PHOTOCOM PHOTO HELPING PAWS By Estelle Atwell By Estelle Atwell While you protect yourself with a padded or fur-lined jacket, thermal underwear, Icelandic mittens and socks, and warm hood or cap, and add extra vitamins to your daily regimen, how does a dog go about protecting himself from sub-zero cold? Most dogs are accustomed to indoor heated temperatures and should not be subjected to prolonged periods of exposure to bitterly cold conditions. Some dogs are kennel dogs used to the outdoors. However, when temperatures fall below zero both indoor and outdoor dogs can use a little extra help from their owners. Cod liver oil has always been a cold-weather fortifier, and blended with really hearty meals is good subsistence for the outdoor dog, helping him withstand cold winds and temperatures. Bitter cold puts the dog's metabolism under severe strain Too much of this can flNF-STOP travel service Villi VI vi airline Planning o Caribbean crui*«? POET'S CORNER TO MY MANY FRIENDS OF RINGWOOD AND GREENWOOD What is a friend? , It is a person with whom you dare to be yourself. Your soul can go naked with him. He doesn't ask of you to put on anything, only to be what you are. He doesn't want you to be better or worse; When you're with him you feel as a prisoner feels who has been declared innocent. Once out of sight, we are out of mind - a saying old - perhaps 'tis true, To prove it false I'll show you how - Just think of me - I'll think of you. A.O. Let ipe speak naught but good of men, Though sinful be their deeds, And should reverses come to them, Let me attend their needs, Make me more tolerant of those with whom I disagree, And always mindful that the fault may largely lie with me. Yet give me courage to defend That which I deem as just, Although I may, in doing so Be trampled in the dust, Make me not envious of men 'More fortunate than I, Nor let me be the sort io gloat Should glory pass them by, Permit me ever to be fair In all I say or do, And may I to my family And to myself be true. Let none but noble thoughts take root And grow within my mind That I may do enduring good And be forever kind, And though 1 could, by doing wrong, Acquire both wealth and fame, Let me do only what is right And keep untinged my name, These things I humbly ask of thee, Again and yet again And if it be Thy will dear Lord, Pray grant them all, Amen. Wearing their knightly armour, I said to them, "Come ye no farther." The first of those four knights said "Hast thou no head?" I said unto him, "Your prospect doth look dim". With that he prepared himself for battle. And said prepare to leave thy saddle. He spurred his horse and I spurred mine, As we travelled down that charging line. My spear held strong and fast, And through his armour past. Yet his spear weakly shattered, As the splinters splattered. When his limp body hit the ground, Those other knights turned around. And I rode on --•*- As another day was gone. Jon C. Anderhub * SALE OF A SOUL Welcome to my hellish hole, For you're another who has sold his soul. You said, "I'd sell it for what I need".
