FOR THAT BETTER VIEW, Warrior Tom Ludwig gets an aerial view of the situation as he and teammate Terry Reiily pressure Jay Craig during an attempted pass to Marian's Mike Tonyan. This type of tight pressure produced numerous turnovers in the opening minutes of the third period and the Warriors took advantage of them as they pulled away to a 41-29 edge. Reilly and Ludwig hit for twelve and nine points while Koerber led the team with twenty-four as the Warriors captured their thirteenth win in a row. ". IVTt Warriors B&t Hustling Hurricanes 75-59 By Dick Rabbitt BMore another large gathering on Saturday night the McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig defeated the Marian "Hurricanes" 75 to 59. The Warriors didn't break the game open until the third period when they scored 10 unanswered points in the opening minutes to pull out to a 41 to 29 bulge. The inspired "Canes" came to play and were not awed by the powerful Warriors. Playing a tight two-three zone that forced the Warriors to take shots from far outside, and the shooting of Mike Nitz and Paul Ringness, Coach Bud Grover's scrappy team had the fans on the edge of their seats throughout the first half. The Warriors jumped out to a quick 4 and 0 lead, but Nitz and company came back strong and took the lead 0 to 9 at the 3:30 mark of the period. Twice during the period the Marian offense caught the Warrior defense napping and Ringness had two baskets from un derneath unmolested by a Warrior. The two teams ex changed baskets and Grover's basket with 10 seconds remaining put the Canes ahead 18 to 15 at the end of the first quarter. . At 5 45 of the second period Hertel's basket tied it up at 21 all. and a minute later Koer ber s basket put the Warriors ahead to stav for the eventeg 23 to 21 The "Canes" however, stuck in there and trailed by the score of 31 to 29 at the intermission. In the opening two minutes of the third quarter the tide changed. Using a tight pressure 'defense the Warriors took advantage of some bad passing at the hands of Marian and came on strong Rode's three point play got the Warrior attack rolling, followed by a steal and basket by Ludwig. Again Marian had trouble getting the ball in from out of boundis. and Koerber was next with another three point play Lund ended the surge with a basket at 6:45 to put the Warriors ahead 41 to 29 Forcing the Canes to abandon their zone defense, by going into a four corner offense, the Warriors began to penetrate toward the basket, and Reilly's three baskets along with Decker, Koerber and Brian Miller put the score 54 to 40 at the end of the period. In the final period the Warrior attack continued, with Koerber, Decker, Reilly, and Ludwig all hitting the hoop, and midway in the period Coach Ludwig went to his bench, and the reserves finished out the game, with the Warriors on the long end of a 75 to 59 margin It was a hard fought game measured by the 47 fouls that were called It was a case of the Warriors wearing down the smaller Hurricanes throughout the evening The smaller Marian five had to fight for every rebound agpinst the taller Warriors The well coached, disciplined team of Bud Grover had to abandon their game plan after the ten point spurge of the Warriors in the opening minutes of the third quarter Until that spurt the Canes were in the ball game all the way. The outside shooting of Mike Nitz and Jeff Grover, along with the play of Ringness underneath must have been encouraging to Coach Grover They sure did not look like a team with a 2 and « record. On the other hand the Warriors continued to play good basketball They can shoot, and their defense is improving with every game Koerber led all scorers with Ms points, while Lamos of Marian had 10 of 10 free throws Warriors are now 13 and 1 for the season Friday night Crown comes to West Campus for another North Suburban game l-und Decker Ludwig Reilly Hertel Rode Miller Blankenhom Knaack Totals VARSITY MCHENRY Touts Name Koerber MARIAN CENTRAL Tonyan 2 0 4 Nitz , 5 0 10 Craig i i 3 I .am os . 3 to is Ringness 7 I 15 Coughlin 1 0 2 Grover 4 1 9
