Woes Of Travel Related During Long Trip South (By Father William 0. Hanner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter Church, Episcopal, Kenilworth) The heavy snows we ex^ perienced in Central Illinois thinned out as we got further South. There was hardly a wisp in Cairo. All was miry mud and dirt. ^jCairo, that alert prosperous river town of the great steamboating days, is a shell of its former self. We had spent a day in Cairo on our honeymoor; had stopped at a hotel where General Grant was once housed; could look out over the levee at the turgid, brown Ohio; had breakfasted well on cakes with sorghum; had a happy remembrance of the busy railroad yards and streets. During war days and while I was rector of - St. Stephen's in Miami we had been through the town often, sometimes on the Illinois Central, sometimes by car. That was long ago! Today the then population of 16,000 has dropped to 12,000, to 9,000 and now to 6,000. There is hardly a shell of its former grandeur. It is desolate, dirty, dumpy, dreary and dowdy. We {>ad to eat in sorry cafe, waited on by sorry folk who must have looked better once, eating lettuce, bacon and tomato sandwiches. When people on the road order THAT in a restaurant it is a judgement. It is hard to make a bad bacon, ldttiMtfc and tomato -sandwich but they can doit in Cairo. Rose could still taste the horrid thing id Mississippi. We made what time we could over the dangerous roads in Kentucky after you cross the river. They are high, not wide enough and are cursed with narrow bridges. In spite of the fact that I am an Episcopalian, in spite of the fact that the Pope has ruled there is no such saint as St. Christpher, I would not want to take a chance on Western Kentucky roads without a St. Christopher medal, without a prayer for safe journey and without paid up car insurance. We made it as you know by your present reading"it wasn't fun and neither really was Tennessee. • Tfitere the roads run through small towns, auto graveyards abound. There must be an enormous number of animals killed along our roads, domestic as well as wild, i wonder why the police do not remove them. I have twice missed deer by narrow margins, an harrowing ex perience. This trip there seemed more than usual, cats, dogs, rabbits, the ubiquitous skunk were all there. I am glad there are no longer open ranges in the South-a car and a horse or cow do not mix much better than a car and a bottle. We knew there was a J satisfactory motel in Corinth 'Miss. This was our secon night's goal, After we g settled and had another meal we called up the local rector. Last year we had kept Thanksgiving day with him. He and his wife are both Puerto1 Ricans. They have several children, amongst them a delightful high school senior, Carmen, . named for ler mother. Carmen and her fatfier drove over and took us to risft the family. They were all together for Christmas s» the house was fill. It is a tappy occasion when two clergy can get together and discuss the ways of the world, the State of the Church and the prospective new Book of Common Prayer. This local rector t Puerto v Riean tmeeetry -anf If agree hands 'down on newly every topic. If you like ne I think you'd like him; if you can't stand me I don't think you'd be fond of him either, Anyway we, Father Mattei andl, had a good visit, drank a glass of his ex cellent Christmis wine and • happily agreed ;m the terrible state of the vorld. Carmen contributed several choice bits, it was a gala risit. We Cook it e«sy the third day out. We did n»t want to get to Biloxi at nigit so we stopped early at Lauiel where it simply v poured and messed up a nice - wash job I had in Corinth. When yoif Jrive through small Mississippi towns they vie with each other to arrange un necessary stop lights. They have ten in town where two would be lots. They change so often they appear to wink and twinkle like Christmas tree lights and they give a sort of dashing exuberance to your progress through several blocks of whatever "ville" or "burg" you may be traversing. Well, we got to Biloxi on the thirtieth. We stopped at a new address we had hoped to have there. Full up. We tried two more we knew in Ocean Springs. Unsatisfactory requirements. But number four was right up our alley. The only thing is we came with sheets for twin beds and this apartment had a queen sized double. Rose went to Keesler field and bought a set Of queen size sheets, very flossy and flowery they are , too. Now what do you do with twin bed blankets in this sort of situation? They were not wide enough. Why, dear inexperienced friend, you run TWO-CROSS WISE-K>f the bed instead of lengthwise and it works, too-just fine! * • * * The reason truth makes such slow progress in the world is that it's in competition with pre tense. 13.™ ANNUAL RECREATION VEHICLE SHOW JAN. 16 thru 25 3 MIDWEST'S LARGEST INDEPENDENT DEALER SHOW 18 MODELS DISPLAYED INDOORS FOR YOUR VIEWING COMFORT LOWEST PRICES OF THE YEAR X featuring AIRSTREAM - ARGOSY - MIDAS HOLIDAY RAMBLER •FREE REFRESHMENTS r\ - ;£i. • •DOOR PRIZES •MOVIES •MOTOR HOME RIDES FOR THE KIDS VaOe?
