(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) One of McHenry's most popular gals, Vera Purvey, passed away last week and many friends didn't catch up to the news until after the funeral. Maybe cable TV would be the answer to such problems. Vera Purvey was the kind of person we admiringly term as a "good scout." A friendly way and winning smile made her welcome as she walked through any door. x Coach Ludwig's wife left the gym Friday night in a very relaxed mood after seeing the Warriors breeze to victory over the Crown team. Crown had what they call a physical team, husky and strong fellows. They stayed with the Warriors for awhile, then faded back as the home steam roller went from a chug- chug into high gear. Once again the crowd saw the Ludwig bench come into the fray with good results. This year Coach Ludwig can use different combinations to fit the situation. If the team lags, he has the pickerupppers ready. Never agreed with Coaches who fail to clear the bench and give all the boys a chance to play when the game is either in the bag or hopelessly lost. The league - leading Warriors made it 15 straight wins as they invaded Lake Forest Saturday night. Anyhow, it was a good game to watch and had the usual ifs. As one of our English teachers taught us to say, the better team won. Warrior pressure against their opposition has aided them In their fifteen game winning streak.Ahove (small photos) left-right, Tom Ludwig, Tony Cristy and Terry Reilly make things tough for Crown players, whether they are attempting a pass or a shot. Koerber's basket tied it at 12 all, and in th$ closing seconds Brian Miller's iwo free throws put the Warriors ahead 15 to 14 at the end of the period. With another large crowd on hand urging the Warriors on, they began to roll during the second period. Reilly and Koerber put the Warriors up by five, and then a famous Reilly pass to Miller brought the crowd to their feet as Miller went in unmolested for the layup. The onslaught continued as the Warriors raced up and down the court scoring at will and putting up 31 big points during the period to just 12 for the Vikings. Using the full court press the Warriors continued to hassle the befuddled Vikings, and Ludwig scored two quick baskets, followed by Koerber's, and Decker driving in, for the layup was fouled, converting the free throw for three more points. Midway in the period the Warriors led 62 to 30, and the only thought running through the minds of the fans was just how bad it was going to be for Crown. With Hertel, Reilly and Hurckes all making baskets the score mounted to 73 to 42 going into the final quarter. With the regulars safely tucked on the bench, the Warriors reserves continued to press and score. Don Rode hit a layup, Hurckes had 15 footer, Tony Christy got into the act with another 15 footer, Billy Meyers broke away on two steals for baskets and Randy Blankenhorn finished the scoring when he sot a 20 footer with fifteen seconds remaining for the 94 to 58 win. According to Coach Sobczak it was one of those nights when everything went wrong. Peterson, Useman, Freund, Swanson, and Christopher were all winners for the Warriiors. On Friday night the Warriors host one of the top teams in the conference when the always powerful ' North Chicago Warhawks will come to West Campus. team. Jensen, their second high scorer, was limited to 2 free throws, and Rhode, another gun in the attack, was held to one free throw. Bernhard led all scorers with 30 points. The Warriors again put on a good show for the home crowd. Again it was the mercy of Coach Ludwig that didn't let the score get into triple figures. They executed well and again the defense was a major factor in the many turnovers of the Crown team. JANUARY 21,1§7» Warriors 15th By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry Warriors after a sluggish first half rolled to their 15th win in a row when they defeated Lake Forest Saturday night at Lake Forest 62 to 42. Die win still keeps the Warrior atop of the North Suburban with a 6 and 0 record. The Warriors played in spurts in the first period. Lund opened" the scoring with a basket at 6:45, and Koerber and Reilly had back tofc^ck baskets around the 4:90 mark. At the 3:45 mark Reilly hit on two quickies for a Warrior 10 to 0 lead and it looked like the game of Friday night. The Scouts fought back and pulled within one, before Decker's basket made U12 to 9 at the end of the period. The Warriors shooting was as cold a; the sub zero weather outside, as they missed time and time again the easy shots that generally go in the basket. Hertel's three baskets put the Warriors ahead 18 to 9, but the pesky Scouts sensing an upset came roaring back to close the gap. Ludwig and Koerber gave life to the Warriors, and finally Hertel's basket in the closing seconds gave the Warriors the edge at the intermission 26 to 17. Four times the Warriors were in a position to blow the game wide open, but couldn't get the job done. The Scouts hung in there and although overmatched, gave it all they had. Again in the third period the Warriors roared out to a commanding lead, only to see the Scouts come roaring back to narrow the gap. Koerber, „ Miller, Reilly and Ludwig put the Warriors up 36 to 21 only to see the lead dwindle to a 38 to 29 edge at the end of the period. In the final pertfd the Warriors not only broke out again, but this time managed to fight off the Scouts. Steve Koerber took charge and the big guy not only scoped 9 points, but begqn to cjear off both boards to generate the Warrior ^rfast break. With pin point passing, good rebounding, and better shooting percentage, the Warriors won going away 62 to 42. This was a game when the defense came to the front. When the going got tough, the defense came to the rescue. It was a night when at times the ball just would not go into the hoop. Six times a Warrior missed a layup, and I don't know how many times a shot fell short of the rim. For three quarters the Warriors played like a so-so club, but in the final eight minutes they played like ' the Warriors of old. It was good win, they looked better against a zone defense, which seems to be the type of defense they are running up against in the conference. In talking with Coach Ludwig after the game he commented "The boys played good defense", he also added "when the offense gets stalled, your defense has to hold you up". That was the story at Lake Forest. The Warriors will be hard at work this week in preparation for the game at Nofth Chicago Friday night. As we dined in the confines of the beautiful Varese restaurant and pub (in beautiful downtown McHenry), Tony announced that he has swung over to the Sox. The stand pat, no action front office of the Cubs has him, as Amos and Andy would say, regusted. Of course, we know that Mona is on our side of the fence. Haven't had a chance to find out about John Varese. He probably sees the light. Now comes some real tests. Next Friday night the team goes to North Chicago. On Saturday they trip to Kaneland for a non-conference game. The following week Liber- tyville comes a callin' to challenge our team for top honors. But, let's not look ahead. The sports world knows you have to take one game at a time. When you don't, somebody unex pectedly lowers the boom. Great numbers are swinging over to the Sox. Just remember. If you don't plan to stay, don't come.
