f On The Sidelines Wf DM* ftatMft Something new in local basketball action will take place tomorrow afternoon. For the first time in history McHenry High will play a home afternoon game on a Saturday. The sophomores will get under way at 12:00 and the varsity game will start about 2:00 P.M. It is an experiment on the part of the schools involved and radio station W.K.R.S.(1220) which will bring the varsity game live to you people who cannot make it to the game. W.K.E.S. has been involved throughout the season with teams in Lake County with a Saturday matinee broadcast, and from all reports both the broadcast and fan attendance has been a success. With the Ubertyville Wildcats coming to Buckner Gym, and first place at stake in the North Suburban, I feel that the gym will be packed. For you fans who haven't seen the Warriors in action, what better opportunity than an afternoon game. Ubertyville has a big following, but I'm confident our Warrior fans won't let the team down. Didn't mean to scare some of you fans away last Friday night at North Chicago by telling you to be there by 6:30 P.M. There was a huge McHenry crowd on hand, but I got there late* than I expected and I couldn't see the scoreboard, because I was up in a corner of the gym, the only seat available at 7:00 P.M. The "Water Warriors" of Mike Shanahan are doiig quite well for just having a few in numbers on the team. In the past week they defeated both Waukegan schools along with Crown. No telling what the Irishman could do with a bigger squad Injuries and sickness have hurt the "Rassling Warriors" the past week. Coach Marty Sobczak's squad is giving everything they got, but when your shorthanded, what can you do? I personally feel like many of you that the I.H.S.A. will have to do something about the violence at high school basketball games. From remarks I have made in the past, you are probably aware that I have no love for our beloved I.H.S.A. officials. We have a group of people in Bloomington, who are well paid but who are unable to make a decision, because they might step on some schools toes. The number one high school team in Illinois, Phillips of Chicago forfeited a game in Gary Indiana few weeks ago. Coach Herb Brown didn't like the officiating so he took his team off the floor and went back to Chicago. This is in strict violation of the I.H.S.A. code of conduct. According to the rules, Phillips must pay the sum of twenty five dollars to the Gary School. No concern of the 4,000 people in attendance who paid their way in to see the game, between the top rated schools of the states involved. No decision as yet by the I.H.S.A. », A month ago Coach Wes Mason of Bloom High School of Chicago Heights was arrested by police for striking an officer who was trying to break up a post game fracas between players of Bloom and Thornridge. No decision by the I.H.S.A. Last Friday night a Thornton player struck a Thornridge player in the cheek. Result the injured player has had surgery for a broken cheekbone, and may lose partial sight of the eye. The I.H.S.A. is investigating the act. If this violence continues in high school athletics, someone is going to get killed. If the reason of all this violence is that the teams involved are rating conscious, or the pressure to win the state title is go great, then I suggest that we forget ranking the teams, have no state titles, and let the teams (day their schedules for the fun of it. Isn't that the purpose of high school athletics. It is time for the I.H.S.A. to act and do it quickly. Suspend coaches and prohibit teams from competing in the state series if these actions continue. The N.C.A.A. put the finger on Michigan State. Oklahoma is coming off two years probation from T.V. and bowl games. With 735 high schools in Illinois I don't think that if one or two are missing from state tournament play that it will be a dismal failure. It is about time some., positive action is taken. The proper operation of all types of boats, especially the family outboard is emphasized in a 10-week course which begins Tuesday February 10, 1976 at 8:00 p.m. in Fox Lake, Illinois at the Grant High School. Registration will take place the first night at 8:00 p.m. Aimed to teach the minimal knowledge required for safe boating, completing the course will increase the boatman's confidence, according to William R. North, Commander of the Chain-O-Lakes Squadron. "It will lay a basic foundation for building boating skills by further study, application and experience," he said. The classes cover such sub jects as boat handling under normal and adverse conditions, seamanship and common emergencies, rules of the road, aids to navigation, compass and chart familiarisation, running lights and equipment, boat trailering and river boating. The Chain-O-Lakes Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, largest volunteer educational organization for boatmen in world. Its members are m dedicated to promote safety in boating through education and donate their time to this ser vice. Top place team, "Bowlers", keep a good hold on that spot while last place "Phoenix" digs into the bottom deeper each week. Due to the winter doldrums, we had 5 subs filling in, and E. Rogers (S.S. of the week) racked up a 236 and a 535 for both high game and high series. Even her "trip" down the alley didn't stop those records. W. Coari again burned up the lanes and bowled a 230 and totaled 547 , for the honors. • v . B. Novak picked off the 2-10, B. Thompson got the 5-7, C. Leonard got the 3-7, and both A. Street and R. Glawe did their thing on the 5-10 split. "Little" Lynette got it all together and raised her average by 2 pins. Tune in next week. Freedom from anxiety is one of the most important factors in successful aging and en courages remaining at work until late in life, according to a study by the Boston outpatient clinic of the VA. Involving 2,000 Totals men over a 12-year period, the study shows anxious people tend to want to retire younger while more calm and stable men prefer to retire at an older age.
