Father M.J. McEvoy. His demise on Monday, Feb. 1, came as a distinct shock to his friends. He had been ill for six days with a very severe attack of double pneumonia but no one expected or even for a moment thought that the illness would result fatally. He had been the guiding star in McHenry for the last eleven years. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Freund entertained a few of their friends at a party Sunday evening, the occasion being their second wedding an niversary. The evening was spent in playing bunco and other interesting games. Those present were Carolyn Miller of Wilmette, Marie Baer, Mathilda Freund, Kathryn McCabe, Julia May, Arline Harrison, Mildred and Eleanor Kinsala and Robert Weber, Donald Harrison, Stanley Carlson, Elmer Kinsala and Joseph Freund. Births to McHenry residents this week included a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Freund on Jan. 29- and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Unti on Sundfey, Jan. 31. Col. Frank L. Smith of Dwight, 111., Republican candidate for United States senator, was in McHenry last Thursday afternoon, where he met as many voters as possible in the short time he spent here. The inclement weather prevented a gathering in McHenry but that evening Col. Smith spoke to a small but representative group at the courthouse, speaking against the world court and discussing measures which he favors to aid the farmer. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 6, 1936) The large barn on the Martin J. (Happy) Weber farm, located about four miles southeast of McHenry, near Griswold Lake, was destroyed by fire about midnight Saturday with a total loss estimated at about $6,000. The blaze apparently started in the top of the barn and the crackling of the flames and the noise of the frightened cattle awakened Mr. Weber who rushed out in his night clothing to release twenty-six head of livestock, getting them out just before the roof collapsed. Weber managed to release the frightened stock and was pulled out unconscious just in time to escape the falling, blazing hay from the collapsing"loft. Announcement is made this week that the B.H. Freund Motor Sales, located on Pearl street, has accepted the agency in McHenry for the sale of Packard motor cars. This sales organization has been the local representative for Nash and LaFayette cars for some time and reports a very gratifying run of business. At the beginning of 1935, Walter J. Freund, west side tire dealer, conceived a novel idea for a contest among his customers and offered a new tire to the one in whose tire brought in for repairs con tained the largest piece to cause the puncture. C.F. Anglese was the winner, his tire shoeing that a Ford spring leaf, 9Vfe inches in length had cut into the tire. He was presented with a new Goodyear tire. Mrs. Somon Michels who is in Pensacola, Fla., keeping house for her uncle, Msgr. Schmitt of Aurora, writes to her sister, Mrs. Nick Freund of this city, that she is enjoying the warm weather there and that they sit on the porch and go in swim ming. They are making a garden and planned to go deep sea fishing when Mrs. Michels wrote. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schaefer are parents of a daughter, born Sunday at St. Theresa's hospital, Waukegan. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 15, 1951) McHenry firemen, who have done their share of fire fighting during the extreme cold weather this winter, were called to the Central Certified store on the corner of Elm and Green streets at 11:55 last Friday morning. Due to their speedy answer to the call for aid, serious damage was averted. It was determined that an overheated pipe which had scorched some wood, gave promise of gaining headway. Police Officer Elmer Murphy has been named civilian rifle instructor for the Fifth district of the National Rifle Association of America in connection with the current civil defense program p r o m o t i n g n a t i o n a l preparedness. The community was sad dened last weekend to learn of the death of Dr. L.B. Murphy, Sr., in Physicians and Surgeons hospital, Chicago, on Saturday, Feb. 10. He began practicing dentistry in McHenry in 1942 and continued his local practice until last Dec. 26. His survivors include his widow, Hazel, and one son, Capt. L.B. Murphy, Jr., former McHenry dentist now serving with the army at Camp McCoy, Wis. Should anyone have any doubts as to the unity of Americans in the years ahead, they would certainly have become considerably lessened as they looked upon 700 of tomorrow's adult citizens who gathered in the huge auditorium of the Woodstock Community high school last Thursday for the first county music festival in twenty years. McHenry has been asked to hold the 1952 festival and plans are under way to begin preparations as early as this Spring. Larry Haug of Shalimar and Bill Hecht of McCullom Lake left by train Saturday for a vacation in California. They intend to spend most of their time in Hollywood, but will also visit friends in Long Beach and San Francisco. The Leonard Blake family has moved from the residence of her parents, the E. Pieserts, south of the city, to their new home on Maple avenue in Lak- View subdivision. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 10, 1966) Rev. Fr. Edward C. Coakley, 60, one of the most revered pastors in the city for many years, died in St. Joseph's home, Freeport, Tuesday 'fhorning, Feb. 8, following a long period of poor health. He had been pastor of St. Patrick's church, McHenry, for seven teen years. Two Illinois state troopers* have been awarded American Red Cross certificates of Merit for lifesaving feats. Troopers Larry Lynn of Wonder Lake and Wilbur A. Reynolds of Lake Villa were presented their certificates and lapel pins by Maj. Albert S. Hinds. The McHenry Hospital association held its annual meeting Saturday night and voted to increase the board of directors from seven to nine members and to include one member of the Women's auxiliary in this increase. At the election of directors, George P. Freund, Joseph A. Conerty, Jr., and O'Dean Cross were re-elected for a further three-year term. Joseph Frett 1 of Johnsburg was elected to the newly created three-year term and Mrs. Claude F. McDermott was elected as a new one-year director to represent the Women's auxiliary. Births at McHenry hospital this week included daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Conway and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Raske on Jan. 31, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Olsen on Feb. 1, sons to Mr. and Mrs. David Lennon and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Burmann on Feb. 5 and daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Freund and Mr. and Mrs. William Davidson on Feb. 6.
