PAGE 14 • PLAINDEALER-FR1PAY, FEBRUARY t, lfTt CHDBCH SERVICES We all know the shock of losing something we value. A misplaced book or valuable papers -- even a treasured heirloom -- gone astr«y can frustrate us for hours or even days. Diligent search often ends the mystery, but the memory of our exasperation lingers. Yet while the loss of something material is easily grasped, many of us never realize that we may be missing important intan gibles . . . like the secret of a richer, more satisfying life. This search needn't take long, though. Millions find the faith that fulfills -- every Sunday in church. So can you. » Sunday Luke 18:9-14 • Monday Luke 19:1-10 • Tuesday Ephesians 4:25-32 Wednesday Numbers 8:22-27 • Thursday Proverbs 3:13-26 • Friday Isaian 26:1-9 • 9 Saturday Matthew 8:23-34 First United Methodist Church 3717 West Main Street Church phone 385-0931 Ralph Smith, Pastor Parsonage Phone: 385-1352 Worship: 9:30a.m. and 11:00a.m. Church School: 11:00 a.m. Church of God Greenleaf Ave at Fairfield Dr Island Lake School Services: Sunday School-IOA.M Church Service - 11 a.m. Evangelistic Service - 7p.m. Telephone:312-526-8056 St. Peter's Catholic Church Spring Grove, Illinois Rev. The celebration, proclaimed both nation-wide and state wide, is to inform the general public and local businessmen of the number of future executives, secretaries, business machine operators, teachers, and clerks being trained in the high school, vocational-technical schools, business schools, and colleges and universities throughout the country. The week also will see business students actively informing the public, especially other young people, about the exciting and rewarding op portunities that await them in the FBLA club. In all fifty states and Puerto Rico, students „will be observing the week by telling the story of their organization and its ac tivities. To show the importance of business and the role of youth in business, members of the McHenry chapter plan to have various contests held in school in which all the proceeds will go to the March of Dimes organization. Each student will have the chance to win a prize and help a worthy cause at the same time. Membership of the national organization of FBfcA has over 100,000 voung people in 2,800 communities actively involved in the day-to-day processes and activities of those com munities. Rehearsals Under Way For Spring Concert Sunday, April 4, will be the day for the annual springtime concert of the combined choruses of McHenry County college and the Northern Illinois Choral association. By popular demand, they will be repeating the beautiful St. Patrick's Mass by Philip Green, along with Benjamin Britten's "Rejoice in the Lamb", and Vaughan Williams' "Serenade to Music". Under the direction of Ms. Margaret Griffith, director of music, McHenry County college, rehearsals are already under way at 7 p.m. Monday nights at Lundahl Junior high school in Crystal Lake. Tenors and baritones who would like to participate in this exciting program should call Ms. Griffith at the college. MCC Secretarial Class Interrelates With Audio-Visual Adult Education secretarial classes offered at McHenry County college for the spring semester are interrelated with the MCC AVT (Audio-Visual- Tutorial) center. This makes it possible for students who have signed up for the Personal Typing, typing Refresher, and Shorthand Refresher courses to use the center at times con venient for them. Students may come at any time (day and-or evening) during the hours •listed below to work on the courses. Because of the open entry- open exit concept, one may still sign up for the classes. Times for the courses are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For 'more information call the Office of Community Services at the college. Mercy towards fellow humans has been a recent idea with mankind, it seems. In the Roman gladiatorial fights, death was the only referee. In the 1700's, it is estimated that over 50,000 people were burned at the stake in Europe, often for trivial causes. The public en joyed these shows tremen dously and people would walk scores of miles just to see it. In Mexico City, Cortez relates, he counted over 100,000 human skulls-all victims of their religious ceremonies. Napoleon had 8,000 prisoners led out and killed, just to save feeding them. Many a military general has lined up his entire army, and had every tenth man executed-just to show them who was boss. In the late 1800's, in England, a man could still be thrown into prison for a debt of as little as a dollar, and kept there for years, until it was paid. « * * » It's good you don't hear most of what people say about you.
