Hanner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church, Episcopal, Kenilwerth) When a day dawns bright and clear we get the car gassed up and tour the countryside. Last week we drove over to Sliddel, La. There was a reason. On our honeymoon trip in 1934, as we started across the seven-mile bridge over Lake Pont- chartrain, our fan belt had broken. We were driving a model A Ford. Half way across the bridge th$ car was boiling like an old copper wash boiler. In replacing the fan belt I inadvertently ruptured the radiator. The bridge tender at the turn-around span looked and called, "Don't worry,, I've called a tow truck!" I did worry, though - how much would this cost? We were newlyweds in depression time. I asked the tow driver to take me to a garage. When I asked his charges he wheeled away calling back. "Courtesy of the bridge!" So far, so good. The garage man started to work on the leak. He grunted and strained over tubes, wrenches, pet cocks and soldering irons. Forty-five minutes later he finished and looked up. He filled her with water and again, a tremble, I queried, "How much? This was 1934 ~ remember, "How much?" said he, pon dering this question a bit. "Would a quarter be too much?" With a new lease on life I presented him with 50 cents. We departed, dry, solvent and relieved. Now, forty-one years later, we wanted to see the town where this had happened, Slidell, La. It lies perhaps thirty miles east of New Orleans. The super highway. Route 10, passes nearby. The town was once a hamlet; today it bustles - streets torn up - too much traffic. I was a little let down. But then, we had learned of a new restaurant, launched by a young man who had served his chef's apprenticeship in a fine New Orleans establishment. In his kitchen he prepared me a tasty poached sea trout with creamed spinach and holian- daise sauce and fancy potatoes better than good French fries - tastier. The town wasn't all I could ask- but the food was a silver lining. We came home on the Coast road, old Route 90 This road has been replaced by a beautiful new freeway, Route 10. that you use from Gulfport to New Orleans. This is why the old route is deserted and emp ty. The old road gave a pleasant and easy drive as far as Gulfport. However, their Route 10 traffic is diverted foul" miles south to the old road. This you follow through Gulfport and Biloxi, right along the coast. Now your peace disappears. The road can become a madhouse of dashing cars and noisy, roaring, spee^ng trucks. This stretch pf Route 90 is one of the fifteen deadliest strips of highway in the nation. Wide clean beaches are between you and the Gulf of Mexico. On the land side there are private homes, some old and beautiful, restored since Camille (hurricane 1969). But the high way is also replete with great motels, gas stations, shopping centers and the odds and ends of a resort sea shore. After the road leaves Biloxi it crosses a bay of the same name and runs through Oqean Springs four blocks trom our apartment on the beach. Now what gets me is, on the back side of Biloxi and Gulf port-runs and has run for from four to six years a beautiful, completed stretch of Route 10 on which no traffic is per mitted. I hear all kinds of reasons for this state of affairs but one thing is plain. Someday speed and safety will demand that route 10 be opened for traffic. What this may do to the businesses along old 90 is not hard to imagine. It will be tough business. I have told of service at the Biloxi library. Once they loaned me a book on my Social Security number. Today the lady at the desk was answering questions over the phone. She said lots of people call in and ask her for information. "What congressional district are we in?" (5th Mississippi, Rep. Lott); "How much snow does it take to make an inch of rain?" (12 inches says the U.S. Weather bureau); "What is an eleven-sided geometrical figure called?" She had to call the local junior college for the answer to this one. A professor told her it is called an un- decagon. That's reasonable. Un is one, deca is ten. add and you get eleven-then add gon which means angle and you get un- decagon -an eleven angled figure!
