Choirs Of St. John In Winter Concert V.A. NEWS Musical settings of selections from the book of Psalms will highlight the midwinter concert to be presented by the choirs of Saint John the Baptist church, Johnsburg, Thursday evening, Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. in the church. The adult women's choir will open the program with two works for the Lenten-Easter season from the late Renaissance-early Baroque era: Antonio Lotti's motet "Vere Languores Nqstors" and Francois Couperin's "Christ Is Arisen," the later work em ploying sopranos Christine Gwiazdowski and Christine Marulewski in the duet for two soloists against the concerted choir. Mary Idstein will open Part II of the program, Music from the Psalms, with the Beethoven lieder, -'Nature's Praise Of God" fro-n his Six Sacred Songs of pellert. This will be followed by six movements from Marcello's Fifty Psalms Of David, including Psalms 19 and 20 for solo organ, and settings of Psalms 17, 18, 13 and 23 for choir and organ including "O Hold Thou Me Up," "O Lord Our Governor," "And With Songs I Will Celebrate," and "Thou O Lord Art My Shepherd." The final work in the Marcello group, the setting of Psalm 23, will be followed by two other settings of the beloved "Good Shepherd Psalm, with Judith Oeffling singing "Green Pastures" by Taylor-Sanderson, and the full choir singing Franz Schubert's majestic "The Twenty-Third Psalm" from the Romantic era. The solo ensemble will open Part III of the concert program with the "Dona Nobis Pacem," a canon for three voices, followed by the combined choristers and choirboys with brass instruments and per cussion singing Martin Franzmann's twentieth- century hymn, "Light From Above", sung to the Welsh hymn tune Ton-y-botel. Trumpeters William and Michael Pritchard, trombonist Thomas Cahill and per cussionist Martin Palmer will join the combined children's choirs for this work. Music from the Russian church will make up the final group of the program, opening with the choir of Saint John's * Dfli tnianaky's mighty hymn, "Divine Praise'.', followed by the children's choirs and solo ensemble presenting the Russian folk hymn "In My Name." An example of Russian unac companied chant with choral background will be found in Alexander Gretchaninof's massive setting of the Nicene Creed, "Credo", with contralto Yvonne Matt chanting the creed according to the new English translation while the choir in four-part harmony sings the text, "I believe", as a chordal accompaniment. The combined children's choirs will return to sing the famed Russian Easter score of Kopolyoff, "Alleluia! Christ Is Risen", while the choir of Saint John's will close the program with the Kyrie sung in Russian, "Hospodi Pomilui" of Lvovsky, a giant choral chant employing both the harmonic sounds and dynamic gradations which are a vital part of Russian sacred choral song. The concert will be directed by John R. Heidinger, M.S.M., director of music at Saint John's, who will also be the organist for the program. This second concert in Saint John's 1975-76 Sacred Concert Series is open to the public without ticket or charge and everyone is cordially invited to attend this evening of sacred choral music. Christmas Seal contributions to the DuPage-McHenry Lung association in McHenry county are running 2 per cent ahead of this same time last year, ac cording to M. Kendall Bird, Crystal Lake, association president. "Reminder letters have beat sent to some 1,500 McHenry county families and firms who have consistently supported us in the past, and when we hear from them within the next few weeks, we are confident that the Lung association will surpass last year's Christmas Seal campaign which totaled nearly $152,000.00", Bird said. He added that many of the association's Christmas Seal contributors send their donations in February or early March each year. August M. Rossetti, M.D., McHenry pediatrician and chairman of the Lung association's Medical Advisory committee on Respiratory Illnesses, recently returned from the University of Colorado's specail course on "the young lung", during which time he was sponsored by the DuPage-McHenry association. Such courses are part of the Christmas Seal agency's year round activities to help insure the availability locally of adequate treatment facilities for lung illness sufferers. The association also sponsors monthly breathing clubs for such persons, and reminds residents that these will be resumed the secqnd lufisd&jiuiu March at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County in Woodstock. The association is also launching a program of providing breathing tests for adults in McHenry county industries, with its newly acquired pulmonary function analyzer. "If persons unknowlingly have early signs of emphysema or some other chronic ob structive pulmonary disease, such as asthma or chronic bronchitis, early detection with this machine might prompt earlier medical attention and thereby relieve future human suffering," Bird said. (Editor's Note: This is the eighth in a series on UN DERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH, presented as a public service by the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic of McHenry County Purpose is to help develop a much broader understanding of one of this nation's maior health problems. Information is supplied with the cooperation of the U S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Today's presentation concerns A Child's World). 1 4 Many have heard the phrase. "When I was a child ... I thought as a child . . . but when I became a man, I put away childish things." Mental health research has confirmed that a child's thoughts about thimself and about his world do develop from egocentric ("I-centered") concepts to larger, more social concepts. Piaget, the noted Swiss psychologist and researcher, made a study of children in which he measured their use of ego-centered language and socialized language. He found that before the age of six about 45 percent of the child's language is ego-centered, while after six the use of ego-centered language declines sharply Piaget believed that early ego-centered language is a result of two factors: (1) The young child (under six or eight years) has no sustained social relations with others and lives in a world in which individual and social life seem to be one and the same; and (2) the language used in the child's main activity -play-is more a language of gestures, movement, and mimicry than of words A new study of children's free expressions. A Child's World, As Seen in His Stories and Drawings, by Mary Lystad, Ph.D., of the National Institute of Mental Health, provides clues to how children view themselves and how they relate to the larger world It includes stories and drawings by first-graders, third-graders, and fifth- graders. a discussion of their stories and drawings from the point of view of development, and a study of the books children read and those adults praise. An appendix provides lists of those books favored by children and those chosen by adults. In a foreward to the new publication. Dr. Bertram S Brown. Director of NIMH, points out that the study shows changes in the child's sociocultural perceptions over time, where the child's in terests lie. how these interests differ according to the social background of the child, and how they differ from the reading materials commonly offered him. A Child's World will interest parents, teachers, school counselors, librarians, and others. Copies may be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents. U.S. Government Printing Office.
