PAGE 17 SUPPLEMENT TO THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER- More storage with less care The American home- maker may let herself get carried away from time to time by fashion trends, but she knows exactly what she wants in a home: more storage space and maintenance-free building materials. That's the word from General Electric's Con tract Sales Division in Louisville, Ky., after rank ing the home features re quested by 3,000 women in different cities across the nation. The most requested fea ture? A laundry with cab inets for storage, reports Jean Mattlngly, OE's Man ager -- Home Moderniza tion. "If that comes as a sur prise, consider the fact that the average family washes some 400 loads a year, and much of it is done in a damp, poorly lit basement," Miss Mat tlngly said. Ranked second and third in the survey were an exterior of mainte- nance-free material, such as brick, and an interior with maintenance-free material, such as the new no-wax Vinyl flooring. "A kitchen with break fast area, adequate coun ter area between major appliances and proper storage alongside each major appliance was cited with enough frequency to rank it fourth among most requested features," Miss Mattlngly reported. Storage also was a fac tor in the fifth, sixth and eighth most-wanted fea tures, which were: • Small appliance stor age in or near the kitchen. • Adequate closet space for the size of the home. • Planned storage in the garage for bikes, lawn mowers and garden tools. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3. 1976 "Our ability to acquire goods has far outstripped the storage capacity of most older homes," Miss Mattlngly commented. "We amass kitchen gadg ets by the score, have extensive wardrobes for every season and type of weather, and often enough yard and garden equip ment to stock a small nursery, which is why more storage Inevitably becomes a major part of any home modernization project." Rounding out' the top 10 in most-requested fea tures were: private front entry hall leading to all rooftis, more built-in fur niture units, and rooms designed with furniture placement taken into con sideration. "With the cost of basic housing steadily escalat ing, it is going to be interesting to see how many of these features builders will be able to incorporate in new con struction," Miss Mattlngly said. For many who need more space, the economi cal answer for tome time to come is going to be stay put -- remodel exist ing rooms, or add a room (maybe even two).
