ItH With the winter sports season coining to s close a lot of bouquets should be tossed out to a lot of people who made the athletic program at McHenry High School such s success this past winter. The genial hand director John Leighty ind big pep band who performed every home basketball game. Not only their pre-game performance, but when theWarriors were introducted, the inspiring music that brought emotions to their highest, of not ortly to the squad but to Warrior fans in die gym. To the Pom Pom girls who put on many a Aurriing half time shows much to the delight of the fans in the gym. Also to the cheerleaders who inspired not only the fans, but the team as well. The wrestling cheerleaders whose constance chant, pin, pin, could be heard at every match. The mat girls who kept score and did many chores for Coach Sobczak and his staff. To the girls who timed at every swimming meet, I'm sure Coach Shanahan is very grateful. Ticket manager Marty Mullen had his crew ready at every home event, and sometimes was seen taking tickets himself. Last but not least to the Athletic Director Bill Blankenhorn. He was "Johnny on the spot", at all events, and the way the regional was handled was a plus factor to our friend Bill. Where did you ever see a regional tournament handled as efficient as the one here last week at ^est Campus? A bouquet is in order for all you fans who supported the various teams the past winter. Remember without your support, athletics at McHenry High School would be dead. To you fans, whatever event you attended, on behalf of the Athletic Department I want to thank you. You have been great, McHenry has the greatest fans in the world, and we prove it by your attendance at events. Wins or lose you can count on support from the people of McHenry. The Warriors sure put on a basketball exhibition last Friday night in the Regional Finals. The 102 points scored were the highest in any regional in the state. It was basketball at its best, and the Warriors took advantage of every break in the game, which were many, and the mark of a good solid team. Many of you know of the losses of highly ranked East Ley den arid Peoria Richwoods, along with last years state champ Phillips of Chicago. It goes to show you that the polls not only from the daily newspapers, but coaches alike are not always too accurate. East Leyden has been in the4op three the past three years, yet never made it to the state finals. Think I will call upon Dave Miheva and his Ouija Board to pick the winner of the state next week. He was right on the button in the North Suburban this year, and will stick with him during the state series. Oh those Warriors, they did it again. Coming back from a 5 pt. halftime deficit, they overtook the Auburn Knights and won their way into the finals tonight. With a brilliant display of basketball the Warriors showed the huge gathering at Rock Valley College, the reason they were a 23 game winner this past season. In the last six minutes the Warriors had the game under complete control. Much to the delight of McHenry fans, Auburn fans were seen leaving the gym with two minutes left in the game. Will someone in McHenry please tell whoever is in charge of the buses the way to Rockford. The fan buses arrived after the game was under way, in fact the game was nearly three minutes old when the students arrived at the gym. It is inexcusable to be late for such an important game. After all this isn't our first visit to Rock Valley College. I feel that someone should be brought to task for this blunder. Maybe we should excuse the students at noon today so that the buses will be there on time tonight for the championship game. The girls worked as a team and defeated Grayslake 51-42. Patty Stoffel and Mary Koleno were high scorers with 15 and 13 points. Both played tough defense and took in many rebounds. The girls are now 1-6. The Jr. Varsity also won to make it a double win for McHenry. This makes their record 3-4. The tough defense for McHenry gave them a 38-29 win. The girls are looking forward to several more wins this season. Also on Monday , March 8 the McHenry girls won another basketball game. The Varsity, under the excellent coaching of Connie Sanders defeated Lake Forest 69-26. Lake Forest didn't score much against McHenry's tough 2-1-2 defense and their 2-3 press. McHenry took many turnovers and played well offensively. Patty Stoffel led McHenry with 15 points while Cathy Byers and Eileen Connell each contributed 14 points. Being unable to use the many group pictures sent in. a decision was made to discontinue all league groups except cham­ pionship teams. Pictures taken by our staff photographers of athletes on the high school level will be selected as to their importance. Individual pictures of various sports will be appraised as to their newsworthy value and ^available space. It was a flood of group pictures last year that made this decision by the management necessary. The Jr. Varsity also defeated Lake Forest 43-10. With many fast breaks and steals they were always out in front. Playing tough defense and super offense the girls were led by Freshman, Lis Jackson who scored 18 points.
