Holland, director of the Illinois Department on Aging, has released a depart­ mental report covering the first eighteen months of the department. In the report, entitled, "Their Tomorrow is Today," the programs and services for senior citizens are elaborated upon. "This report," said Director Holland, "provides background information on the first days of this department and records the tremendous progress made since its inception in Novem­ ber, 1973." The prime target of the department is the 1.6 miUion people age 60 and over. In the attempt to reach these 1.6 million senior citizens, the department has administered the Title III and Title VII Programs provided through the Older Americans act. T*»e 16-month report follows the growth of the Social Service component, which is Title III of the Older - Americans act. Homemaker, Counseling, Legal service, and Telephone re-assurance are a few of the eighteen services detailed in the report. In 1975, for example, telep>«oe re-assurance reached 4,600 senior citizens. The Nutrition program, or Title VII Program, provided nutritionally-sound, hot meals to approximately 30,000 in­ dividual senior citizens from November of 1973 to June 30 1975. Winter Fun In South Includes Old Friends (By Father William O. Hanner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church. Episcopal, Kenilworth) Most of us have friends of very long standing, with whom we are on small ceremony. Such friends of the Hanners are Craig Atkinson and his wife. We have spent time in three of the last four winters at their apartment in Miami Lakes, Fl. We roomed side by side at Northwestern years ago, I was their best man and he and I went to Europe in 1928 for three months. One of the good things about Miami Lakes is that each several groups of apartments or condominia boast their own swimming pool. We sat beside his in the mild Florida breeze talking over old times and modern problems. You may recall I quoted him on matters of spoken English some time ago (written English too). He is the author of three books with a fourth coming up on The Finances of European Gravel. Miami Lakes is pleasant, the Atkinsons' beds and board are of a very high quality. Credit for this goes to Mrs. Atkinson, who operates with an eye to her guests' well being. From this comfortable and erudite company we separated ourselves about the middle of March and bent our steps northward. We sped by Yeehaw Junction of which I wrote, and where we spent so comfortable a night amid the cane and cattle fields of central Florida and on up through the Orange country to Silver Springs, spending the night at Ocala where someone relieved me of my new corduroy hat. We had not been to Silver Springs, near Ocala, for twenty-five years. They used to be beautiful and primitive with gallons of pure clear water pouring forth to form a clean and elegant lake which one explores in glass bottom catamorans, electrically operated from batteries I think, (not sure of this) for they ran quietly and smoothly and carried about twenty to thirty people in each boat-cost $2.75 each. You could see the springs turning the sand in deep holes and fish of all kind and sorts and sizes plus a couple of alligators probably procured as stage props. We saw an old boat long sunk and even here the inevitable beer cans. But the land about the Springs has been "developed". This is an euphemism for putting in a lot of things that were not there at first and were later added to "make a buck". They had to move the road to accomplish all this so you are a little disoriented at first. They say it prompted one older tourist to exclaim to his wife, "Look mother, they've moved the Springs across the road!" The next night we were in Cordele, Ga. Here we got in one of those motels, nationally known for good beds and terrible meals where the service at dinner was so slow I was accused by my dear wife of not having shaved that day. Cordele is a pleasant town where I got a good haircut for 62.50. Rose sat in the car reading in front of the shop while I waited my turn. Just as I climed into the chair the old truck next to our car backed out, turning too quickly and punched a couple of dents in my fender. It locked the two bumpers together so the police came to pry us a part-damage to my car about 640. No question as to whose fault-we were parked-standing still. Their downtown was being renovated. Many towns have suffered mortal commercial founds from new shopping malls. Cordele has this trouble but they are working hard to restore some elegant old buildings in the old heart of town and the businesses they house. We drove out to see our local Episcopal parish. Its health was at once apparent. The old buildings, consecrated in 1662, were frame but in excellent condition and clean as a newly scrubbed baby. A magnificent, feathery dogwood was in bloom in the side yard, the flowers all drifty and appearing on parallel planes. The parish house behind the church was locked but the exterior was well cared for with firethorn espalied on either side of the door in the form of a cross. The whole job was so well done I wrote a note to the rector and left my card upon the altar where he might find it. He, Father Head, wrote me a note which we got when we got home thanking me for my note. Even with a slow dinner and a bashed fender I have a warm spot in my heart for Cordele.
