I hope the statistics don't apply in your particular case but ... sad to say .. . they do apply across this divorce-weary society of ours. And in spite of the claims of a few liberationist writers, divorce is not doing us any good. It's making people sick. And lonely. And, as we so often say, "It is always the children who suffer most." There's a common attitude floating around these days which says that a marriage is not worth fighting for anyway. And, if your marriage takes work to survive, then it probably was never a very good match to start with. That's pretty poor reasoning and we wouldn't ap proach any other aspect of life and expect to succeed without work. But marriage is worth work. As one very perceptive divorcee recently said Even a bad marriage is better, from the standpoint of having a horns and a family, than no marriage at all and being alone." Of course, I would consider it rather negative motivation to say that divorce is bad because it will make you miserable. The real reason divorce is such a waste is that it is such a complete opposite from the greatest accomplishment that two human beings can make: a home where love is genuine . .. communication is honest . . . and understanding is a way of life. If you ask me why there are more divorces, I'd say it's because we are getting lazy .. . and selfish . .. and afraid to try. Anything worth doing is going to take work. God ordained marriage at the beginning of time and established the family as the natural way for human beings to find security. If your marriage is in danger, get competent help. Be willing to work to make it last. Kor a confidential and Bib lical answer to your questions, write Larry Swaim, 985 Ponce de Leon Avenue, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30306. I was laid off my job in January. Now the company is closing. I was paid for all the hours I worked but I had ac cumulated a month vacation time which I haven't been paid for. Is there a way I can collect this? A. It depends on the cir cumstances under which your company closed. For example, if your company went bankrupt, you must take your claim to Bankruptcy court. Under any other cir cumstances, you should file a claim with the Wage Claim division of the Illinois Department of Labor and let them determine if a hearing can be called. The Wage Claim division is located at 910 S. Michigan, Room 1808, Chicago, II., 60605. Q. 1 live in Carlisle, II.J would like to try to find a job through the Illinois State Employment service but my town doesn't have one. Alexander Executive Vice Preeident A meriean Bankera Amociation That innocent looking per son next to you in the teller line yesterday may have been robbing your bank of hun dreds of dollars with no gun, no violence and no notice. With more than 28 billion checks being written a year, bank check fraud is a growing problem. As a matter of fact, annual bank losses from fraud ulent checks are now twice at high as losses from bank bur glaries and holdups. Banks do everything they can to prevent fraud through check cashing procedures. Eor example, many banks will cash only checks drawn on them. This precaution en sures that they will be able to verify the signature of the person who wrote the check with the signature card On file. Together with solid identification and your en dorsement, the teller has a pretty good idea that the transaction will be legitimate. But, con artists are smart, and have ways of getting around even the most strin gent procedures. And, al though it's ultimately the bank's problem, temporary embarrassment can arise for the bank customer whose account has been tapped by a con artist and who unwittingly overdraws the account before tiie deceit is picked up Once fraud is detected, of course, the bank or merchant who accepted the check is responsible, and must return the cash to the rightful owner.
