McGowan, 22, son of Mrs. Marianne McGowan of 1510 N. Freund, McHenry, has returned to San Diego, Ca., after an eight-month deployment to the Western Pacific aboard the frigate, USS Fanning. During the deployment, his ship travelled over 39,000 miles in both the Pacific and Indian oceans and participated in several fleet training exercises including combined exercises with the ships from the Republic of Korea, Iran, Great Britain, and Pakistan. While deployed, he visited the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea, and Guam. A 1973 graduate of McHenry high school, he joined the Navy in August, 1973. Christian Goetschel, presently attending McHenry West high school, is scheduled for enlistment in the Regular Air force Sept. 10.
