Take Precautions To Assure Tuberculin-Free Fairground PAGE S • PLA IN D F> A LER-FRID AY, MAY SI. I9N PUBLIC pulse" Officials look over materials used in the program to make sure the McHenry county fairgrounds are free of tuberculin germs. Spraying was carried out under the direction of veterinarians to "make sure" livestock and people on the grounds will not come in contact with the germs. From left are Dr. Johann Johnson, county veterinarian; George Young, McHenry county farm adviser; Dr. James Mattison, D.V.M.; and Chuck Weingart, Fair association president. (DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAAREN DODGE) Special precautions have been taken to assure fair exhibitors and fair visitors that the entire McHenry county fairgrounds and buildings will be tuberculin-free, Dr. Johann Johnson, county veterinarian, said this week. Veterinarians with the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted the spraying, using the equipment that was used on the various dairy farms around the county following the mild outbreak of the disease last winter. George Young, McHenry county farm adviser, said there was virtually no chance tuberculin germs were on the fairgrounds, but fair officials along with county health and agricultural officials wanted to be "absolutely sure" so that exhibitors and visitors would be relaxed and eager about taking part in the 1976 McHenry County Fair. Workwlse Questions and Answers Q. At the company where I work we are scheduled by the day. I've worked the last ten days straight. Isn't there a law againstPthis? A. In every calendar week - Sunday through Saturday - you must have one day (twenty- four hour period) off. This means that if you begin work on a Monday, you could work six days that week. You could work the next day, Sunday, and work through Friday of that week. As you have had one day off in each of the calendar weeks, your employer is within the Six Day Week law although vou have worked twelve straight days. Q. I just lost my job. I'm six months pregnant and was wondering if this prohibits me from collecting unemployment insurance. A. Pregnancy does not exempt you from collecting unemployment insurance benefits. If you are otherwise eligible and are actively seeking work and able to work, you will receive benefits. Questions may be submitted to Workwise, Room 1830, 910 S. SEDOM PROGRAM "Editor: "Recently the Southeastern Region Parents' organisation and the District 47 Citizens Advisory council sponsored a presentation at North Junior high school, Crystal Lake, by Robert Boxer, M.D. Dr. Boxer is an allergist. His topic was "The Current Role of Allergy in Nutrition, in Hyperactivity, Learning Disabilities, and Behavior Disturbances in Children" "As a general pediatrician, and in the capacity of being the medical consultant to the Special Education District of McHenry County, I have about two dozen children with this problem in my practice, so I attended the meeting. Dr. Boxer and I expected perhaps a few dozen people to attend the meeting and were both sur prised and delighted to see at least several hundred people in the audience. We got together after the meeting and decided that due to the overwhelming interest shown by the parents, it would be very valuable to expand his limited talk into a comprehensive series of panel discussions to include myself, Dr. Boxer, a pediatric psychologist, learning disability teachers, et al. Since hyperactivity and learning disabilities are complex multifaceted problems requiring a coordinated multi- disciplinary diagnosis and treatment program, we feel that a panel of experts in each of the fields involved with these problems is the only way to do the subjects justice. "Acoordingly, I have spoken with Dr. James R. Albert, the superintendent of SEDOM, and we have decided to set up these discussions for next September and October, after the new school year starts. We have not decided yet on the exact format and the content of the program. Since the discussions are to be designed 'from scratch' for the This week only! STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD parents of McHenry county, we would like to enlist the aid of all people interested in this problem and ask that, over the summer, they contribute their experiences, questions, and suggestions so that we may tailor-make the program to be of as great a benefit to all as possible Questions and suggestions may be directed to either Pat Sohrman at SEDOM in Woodstock or to me at 330 W Terra Cotta avenue, Crystal Laker. Further information will be made public as the program develops. "In conjunction with this program, Dr. Albert and I plan to work with the McHenry County Medical society to set up a dinner meeting where all interested physicians in the county may see the facilities available to them at SEDOM and learn more about how to coordinate a comprehensive evaluation of any of their patients who may have the hyperactivity-learning dis ability syndrome . "The wide scope of learning disabilities and hyperactivity, their protean manifestations, and the need for com prehensive multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment has only been appreciated in the past two decades Even today, comprehensive. community- oriented educational programs are few and far between in this country. It is our hope that our program will make all parents with an affected child aware that diagnosis and treatment facilities are available in McHenry county and that when diagnosed early and treated properly, the outlook for theee children continues to improve every year "Gary R Oberg.
