So -- it was nice to receive a call from John H. Keizer of Middle St. (between Johnsburg and Sunnyside). Our caller is a disabled Vet who can't get around too good but still has a great interest in outdoor life. John read an article that told of a carp removal program by the Department of Con servation that should be a boost to this Chain-O-Lakes area. Between April 1 and Oct. 15 of this year between 3 and 4 million pounds of carp will be removed. Some might say that's a lot of salmon, but 'taint so. A good share will end up in cat food cans. Another call came from our friend Rovena Marshall who found a McHenry High graduation program from way back in the year 1903. It was in her mother's possessions. We'll be looking at that one with interest in this historical year. Another call was an in vitation to attend the Montini All-Sports award night. No more calls so we're on our own from here to the end of this column. So the Cubs made a trade. Seems Andy Thornton talked his way to the Cub bench when a light bat didn't talk loudly enough. Andy showed great promise and may be a great one before long. But the Cubs needed a pitcher more than a first baseman. The Wrigley powers haven't asked us, but don't be surprised to see Rick Monday on first base and Joe Wallis (think"his name is Joe) in center field one of these days. Just thinking ~ sort of. Our kids say that Mom keeps certain items on the same shelf or in the same drawer that she did 25 or more years ago. They can walk into the house and go directly to the spot when they want an item. Now the grandchildren are the same way. Which makes Mom (Grand ma) wonder why Dad (Grand pa) can't find anything. Wonder if "Bringing Up Father" is a chore in every home. State Representative Cal Skinner left a note with in formation on "Summer Programs in State Parks". Says Cal: "Did you know about the nature study tours at the Volo Bog? Bet a lot of local groups might find them in teresting." Nope -- We didn't know. So we are printing a story in the sports section to let you readers know. The news now tells us that the Sox traded Carlos May to the Yankees. Serves those Yankees right. Spring is here and there are signs. As we tour through the countryside, it is a thrill to see baby pigs, newborn calves, pheasant chicks and little ducks (saw the ducks near the Frank Gans home on Fox River). All of those little ones are great, but the sight of a little colt is the greatest in our book. Maybe it brings us back to our pony days. The scope of a man's mind is accurately indi cated by the type of honor that he cherishes. Chapel Hill Golf Gals P.A.R. By Lois Anderson This a reminder for all you gals who are June starters; your first day of play will be June 1. On that day we will be playing our "string tour nament". If you are not familiar with this, it will be explained to you when you come. This is a fun day so we hope to see you there. New players will be assigned to a team, check the list in the Pro Shop for your name and other members on your team. Low Net was played for on Tuesday with four winners. Class A, Lee Nimsgren and Laura Schmitt tied with a 40. Class B, Juanita Holm had a 40 and Class C, Marilyn Ehlen came in with a 29. John Bolton ran a Blind Bogey, the prize was a beautiful red, white and blue golf bag, won happily by Irene Heider. Oops! Last week we had all the names right of the three in Class A who tied for Low Gross, but the score was wrong. It should have been 53. Due to the "proverbial" circumstances beyond our control, the contest for naming this piece has to be extended another week. We're asking you to enter your idea again if you have already submitted one. Those who have not, please do so on Tuesday, and there is a prize for the winner. Happy golfing... McHenry Country Club Third round matches in the 2 man aggregate tournament played at the club on Sunday, May 16 showed the following results. The team of Dick Warf ield-Terry Remke defeated Ron Waytula-John Falcon, Dick Freund-Ed Ray beat Bill Jacobs Paul Fidler, Tim Martin-Lefty Kern over Dick Turner-John Wright and Don Hojnecki-Jim Kenton defeated Ed Cepulis-Bob Mortell. Both matches on Sunday, May 23 should be closely contested as the surviving four teams boast players who have proved in the past they have a highly competitive spirit and do not give up when they are behind in a match. There is still time to sign up for the big Memorial Day Tournament, deadline for signing is May 23. By John Weyland The Mens 16" Softball league continued its season with the third night of games op Thursday, May 13, with the first game between Hiller Construction and Old Bridge. The game started off with Hiller C. retiring Old Bridge in order. Then when Hiller came up they got four runs on three hits with Jim Yaworski getting a three run home run. But when Old Bridge came up in the second they put enough runs on the board to win two ball games. Sparked by four base hits in a row they went on to score 14 runs and collect 12 hits and go around the order twice. Old Bridge went on to win the game 24 to 9. The second game was bet ween Teko's and Coppermine. Like last year this was a close game to the finish but also like last year the result was the same with Coppermine winning it in eight innings by the score of 7 to 4. In the top of the eighth inning Cop permine put it to Teko's by scoring three runs on four singles by the top of Cop- perm ines order. The second game Monday was between Sunnyside Inn and Hautzinger Concrete. All of the runs were scored in the first four innings and Hautzinger Concrete was ahead 8 to 6.
