On The Sidelines The thinclads of Wally Scott put on a outstanding performance last Friday night at the North Suburban Conference Track Meet here at McCracken Field. Falling short by six points to highly rated North Chicago is no disgrace, and of course finishing in second place, an all time high for Warrior track teams, has to be a plus for the local squad. Greg Schaeffer running anchor man for the Warrior in the 2 mile relay, picked up about 8 yds. on his man only to fall short at the finish line. His great run had Warrior fans on their feet, as he really gave it the old college try, But Shannon of Libertyville hung in there for the win for the Wildcats. John Bornhoeft's thirteen foot vault for third place was a pleasant surprise. It was a foot over his best height, and if the young lad continues this way in the district tonight he could be making a trip downstate next weekend. Little Howie Useman dazzled the crowd with his run in the mile relay. He picked up three yards on Nate Lundy of the Warhawks, but it wasn't quite enough, and that event clinched the championship for the North Chicago crew, Every one of the Wafifiors put on a great show, they are to be congratulated on their efforts, and here is hoping all of them can qualify for the state finals. It was a beautiful night for a track meet, and as usual the McHenry crew had things running smoothly. There were no delays, and the meet ended shortly after 9:00 p.m. To all the faithful workers it was a job "well done". The Warriors came back Monday to defeat the Warhawks in a triangular. Strength in the field events won for Coach Scott's thinclads. As you recall in last weeks conference meet the Warhawks didn't score in the shot, discus, high jump, or pole vault but still managed to win the big meet. Coach Ken Swanson's baseball Warriors lost a tough game to Crystal Lake in the Regional held at Larkin of Elgin on Monday. Rob Scherer of the Tigers robbed Joel Wakitsch of an extra base hit with runners on 2st and 3rd and two out in the top of the 7th. It was indeed a major league play by the Tiger, and all hopes of winning went down the drain with the catch. Coach Gary Gray's tennis team finished in fifth place in the conference. The veteran coach was well pleased with the performance of his squad, in what has to be considered one of the toughest tennis conferences in the state. Speaking of tennis we are told that a former Warrior, Brian Fetzer, now playing for McHenry County College and his partner, Jeff Norman, won the Skyland Conference Number 3 doubles held last week. The Scots placed second in the conference, and took eighth place in the state tourney for Junior Colleges. Congratulations are indeed in order for the Peterson sisters, Michelle, Nancy and Sandy along with Mimi Hall whc qualified for the Girls State Track Meet at Charleston this weekend. The local ladies won the 440 yd. relay held at the district the past weekend. The Peterson's gals must inherit their speed from Mom. The McHenry County Track Meet will be held at Crystal Lake on Monday afternoon. It should be a three way battle with the Warriors, Streaks, and Tigers fighting it out for the championship. Something new this year, the sophomore meet will be run at the same time, so the coaches will have to decide where to place their sophomores, in their own class or move them up to the varsity level. This could prove interesting indeed. Next week should close out the long season for McHenry athletics. Baseball is about the only event on the docket, and when it will finish will be anybody's guess. If Libertyville continues to win in state play, it could cause a delay in the Warrior season. These two teams must play a doubleheader, as the Cats are in a tie for first place in the North Suburban, and their games will bear on the conference outcome. Oh well July 4th isn't too bad a day for a doubleheader. MCHS Thinclads Defeat Warhawks And Mustangs \r" ™ By Dick Rabbitt Winning seven events in cluding two relays, the McHenry Warriors avenged a defeat by the North Chicago Warhawks in last weeks con ference meet. The Warriors scored 744 points to the Warhawks 64'* and Mundelein was a distant third with 45. Denny Useman won the 220 yd. dash in the time of 22.4 defeating Charley Fingers of North Chicago. In a fine effort Don Rode tossed the shot put for his best effort ever when he threw it 46' 64" for the win. Next week we will tell the story of Rode's win. I think you will enjoy it. Tonight the Warriors are at Rockford for the District. Here is hoping some of the lads come through and go to the State finals next weekend. 2 Mile Relay: Mundelein.
