So why not celebrate by brushing up on the nutritional value and proper storage of milk and milk products'* Pro perly stored, milk products contribute a wide variety of delicious and economical treats that can be enjoyed by the entire family- Man has been aware of the value of milk for centuries. A basic food throughout one's lifetime, milk and milk prod* ucta provide the beat, food sources of calcium available. Calcium is necessary, of course, for building and main taining strong bones and teeth. But milk has a lot of other thinp going for it, too -- such as other minerals, important vitamins, and high quality protein. And it's good to know there's some form of milk for everyone; whole milk, two percent milk, and skim milk. Two-percent milk offers everything whole milk does, except that all but two per cent of the milk fat has been removed. Good news for weight watchers is skim milk which contains all the essen tial nutrients of whole milk, but less than 0.5 per cent mi'h fat. Dieters may also enjoy buttermilk. Usually made from skim milk, it offers nearly everything regular milk does, but with fewer calories. Whatever form of liquid milk you choose, remember it ia very perishable. Once purchased, it should be hur ried home and refrigerated immediately. One of the most over looked bargains in the market is nonfat dry milk. Just add water to give yourself a low- calorie, high nutrient drink at of regular milk. Once dry milk has been opened, it may gat lumpy and the flavor may change. It is best to transfer it, upon purchase, to a sealed plastic container. After mixing, non fat milk can be stored in Tupper ware's 1 or 2-quart Beverage Container. For those who prefer to "eat their milk" rather than drink it, there are many milk prod ucta to choose from which supply the same amount of calcium and high quality proWin as the milk from which they've been made. The following foods con tain a calcium content equi- of milk. They ar stored in the refrigerator or freeaer in appropriately siaetff sealed plastic containers. 2 1-inch cubes cheddar t cheese 1 cup plain yogurt 1H cups cottage cheese 1 v% cups vanilla ice cream or ice milk There are, of coume. many • other ways of obtaining milk 'a „ nutrients Use U on cereala. > Make a custard. Add it to i soups, sauces, mashed pota-, toes, and other cooked foods. • Above all, remember to store your milk and milk products properly -- and celebrate National Dairy, Month in style! SPRING IS THE TIME to be wary of fraudulent home improvement schemes, says The Better Business Bureau. You can protect yourself by learning to spot phony sales presentations and being familiar with the more common ripoff tech niques. Persons who come to your door offering thejir services to re-roof qr^paint your home, or resurface your driveway should be viewed with caution. While some reliable companies do em ploy door-to-door salesper sons, many such people are experienced con artists. They may travel in their vans, stocked with all their "materials," not so much to keep their operating costs down as to make a quick getaway for the next job. Ask for identification from an itinerant salesper son, or if your community requires licensing ask for proof of this. One common "door open er approacl lent home imi roach which fraudu- provement workers may use is the sur« vey technique Their intern to sell may not be obvio« as they tell the homcownef that such and such an agen cy or research Arm is con ducting a poll about the con dition of roofs or driveways in the area. Sometimes the pitch is that, as a representa tive of a local aluminum sid ing company, the person ig conducting an "inspection** tour of the neighborhood. spurgeons Thtir., Fri., Sat. Only!
