Stonewall Jackson was especially fond of Ashby, who was very dark-complexioned and rode a white horse. He was too daring, and more than once Union officers spar­ ed his life because they so admired his bravery. There was that kind of chivalry in warfare in those days--it's well to remember. In the vicinity of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Ashby's horse was shot from beneath him, on June 6th, 1862. He thereupon undertook to lead a charge on foot, was shot through the heart. Colonel Thomas Kane, of the Pennsylvania "Bucktails," was captured by the Con­ federates in the same encounter. He told his Confederate captors: "I have today saved the life of one of the most gallant soldiers in either anny--General Ashby--a man I admire as much as you do. His figure is familiar to me for I have seen him often enough in our front. He was today within fifty yards ot my skirmishers, sitting on his horse unconscious of the danger. "I saw three of them raise their guns to fire .... I succeeded in stopping two and struck up the gun of the third as it went off. Ashby is too brave to die in that way." Ashby*s men appreciated this eulogy (unknown to Kane Ashby had been killed a few hours later) and after the war one of Stonewall Jackson's staff, Henry Kyd Dou­ glas, of Maryland, personally thanked him in Harris- burg, Pennsylvania. Douglas was there to ask the Penn­ sylvania legislature to remove the Confederate dead from Gettysburg. Kane and another great Pennsylvania soldier of the war, General John Hartranft, convinced the legislature to do so. Ashby was the first to employ a battery of horse ar­ tillery in the war and was said to have once fought thirty cavalry engagements in twenty-eight days. Stonewall Jackson said he never knew his superior. After the war Ashby's remains .were removed from Charlottesville and he was buried at Winchester-in the "Valley" of his proudest days.
