Have a first aid kit.' 4. Have an emergency kit, including lantern, flashlight, flares, jack, spare tire in top condition, and any other necessary repair or warning equipment. 5. Have a what-not kit, in cluding kleenex, sunglasses, moist packaged towelettes, reading material for passengers, a pillow, a blanket and a thermos or two. (But don't try to drive and drink hot coffee at the same time!) 6. Have a child kit (if a child is traveling with you!), in cluding books or toys or games that will quietly occupy the child while he is securely sit ting beneath a seatbelt -- which you should be, too! 7. Remember the 55 mph limit. 8. Take time to stop and stretch and relax. About your home... 1. Stop all home deliveries, including mail, newspaper, laundry, milk. 2 . Arrange to have lights adjusted at night, either by an automatic switch, or better yet, by a trusted neighbor. 3. Ask that neighbor to keep an eye on things in general, and tell him how to reach you in case of emergency. 4. If you'll be away for a while arrange to have your lawn mowed. Thieves look for high grass - among other things. 5. Unplug lights (except those to be used) and electrical ap pliances, including the television. 6. Lock all windows and doors. Remember the cellar door. 7. Tell local police you'll be away and ask them to keep an eye on your home as they patrol. Also let them know where you can be reached. 8. Don't forget your house plants! Ask that neighbor to water them, or to plant-sit! Have a good trip! The fur of a sea otter is very soft and fine, reports the National Wildlife federation. It contains approximately 650,000 hairs per square inch or 800 million hairs in a large otter. When the tips of the dense fur get wet, they cling together in a layer that repels the water and gives the animal insulation and buoyancy. We drove all night Friday to Bellevue, Mi., to meet up with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Russell and daughter Brenda, (my s i s t e r , b r o t h e r - i n - l a w , a n d niece.) We then transferred our luggage to their camper. We all set out then on a four to five hour ride to Nashville. We spent the largest portion of the day after arriving there touring through all the antique and craft shops all up and down the full length of the main street. The reason for this trip was to see my niece Miss Janis Russell appear on stage at the Little Nashville Opry house. She was on the bill with country-western singer, Donna Fargo on May 22. The show lasted about two hours and all during the show, pictures were being taken and after the show autographs were sought. The appearance of Janis was part of the prize she won as first place winner of the Talent Search contest she took pait in at LaPorte, In., May 1. Rusty and I returned home early Sunday evening very tired but thrilled and excited* to have been able to see a relative on stage in the entertainment world, who seemed to fit very well. APOLOGIES The slighting of two guests at the recent baby shower was very unintentional. The two unnamed guests were Mrs. William (Robbie) Nicholas and Louie Schuler's cousin L o r r a i n e w h o c a m e w i t h LaVerne. My apologies to both of you ladies. SHORTCOLUMN These holdays always throw me, as all of a sudden I realize the deadline is one day earlier than usual which results in not enough time to write up a longer column, but I must say it is an improvement over the past as it used to result in no column because of my forgetting completely about the holiday at hand. TIL NEXT TIME Eastwood Manor Men and Women Some say that when a women has a roof over her head and a man inder her thumb, she's happy. Others wonder why if it's a man's • world, how come women seem to nm it? Then there's the ones who claim that a man who thinks marriage is a 50-50 proposition, doesn't understand at least one of two things - fractions or women.
