PAGE 12 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1IM ' Prepare Health Papers For Cattle Exhibitions Cattle exhibitors preparing for "this year's show circuit should get health papers for their animals in order now, says J.E. Pickard, University of :• Illinois Extension veterinarian. To exhibit cattle at Illinois fairs, exhibitors must provide a valid health certificate at each show and have it available on request by animal health of ficials. The document, issued by an accredited veterinarian REAL ESTATE COLOR me Whitmr your rtaf estate needs, Buying, Selling, or Trading a Home, Put us in the picture ... and color it happy! The health certificate must individually identify all animals showing positive identification by tattoo, eartag or registration number. It must also show record of required health tests and vaccinations. The owner's or exhibitor's name and address that appears on the certificate must be the same as the name which the animal will be exhibited, says Pickard. Animals with active ring worm lesions, warts, or with scabies or mage infestations cannot be exhibited. A health certificate for females and bulls must be issued within 90 days of exhibition. If the animal is over six months old it must: -- Have a negative brucellosis test within 90 days of exhibition; or - Originate in a certified brucellosis-free county in which the herd of origin had no reactors on the last complete herd test, and test negative to a brucellosis test within 12 months; or - Originate in a certified herd, be included in the last herd test, and have the certified herd number and date of last test listed on the health cer tificate. If animals under 24 months of age are officially vaccinated, the health certificate must list the record of vaccination. Have all brucellosis testing done early, Pickard advises. Animals suspected to have brucellosis cannot be exhibited. No tuberculin test is required if animals originate directly from a non-quarantined Illinois herd. A health certificate for a steer must be issued within 90 days of exhibition and show that the animal is free of transmissible disease. Steers are not required to have a brucellosis or tubersulosis test. Cattle exhibitors who plan to participate in shows out of state should meet the health requirements of that state, Pickard concludes. What One Person Can Do Nellie Foe Powers, Globe-Trotting Teacher Forty-five years of teaching weren't enough for Mrs. Nellie Poe Powers of Peoria. Since her retirement in 1965, she has begun a new career as a world- traveling trainer of teachers. After she left the Peoria county school System at 68, Mrs. Powers saw a television ad recruiting Peace corps volunteers. She had to sell her abilities to the corps in terviewer, who felt she was too old. She convinced him; now 77, she is one of the oldest persons in the program, and has served three tours. During her years of Peace corps activity, Mrs. Powers has trained teachers for pre-school, primary and elementary levels, planned REAL ESTATE BY OWNER 2 bedroom brick ranch, near golf course, 22x20' family room with fireplace, fully carpeted, water rights mature trees, beautifully landscaped. $46,500.00. - 815-385-8988 6-11 Brand new 3 bedroom ranch on city lot, with sewer and water. Her assignments have taken her to Liberia; to Landaur, India; to Jamaica; and to Lesotho, Southern Africa. "I believe the Peace corps would be a wonderful ex perience for all teachers," says Mrs. Powers. "If active teachers were to take a two-year leave of absence for a Peace corps assignment they would come back with a different slant on teaching and their children would profit from a richer classroom environment." Enthusiasm, dedication and love of others have no "retirement age." Compassion and a lively desire to help can enable each of us to go far beyond the minimum of ser vice. If we do, we have a good chance to make every day of our lives fruitful and rewar ding. Little affection implied. Determination to seize, to control. To a sensitive mind grasp suggests GREED. And does clasp, to a sensitive mind, suggest CLING? It was Our Lord who said of marriage that "a man shall leave his mother and father and cling to his wife, and they shall be one." The Church provides the spiritual resources to strengthen marriage, to make firmer the bonds of family.
