It seems there was a huge swarm of bees in her backyard, going after her children and making their home in one of her trees. She remembered reading that if anyone had questions about mosquitos, to contact the Health department, so she did. They were very helpful and gave her a name of a man who raises bees as a hobby, and is interested in collecting as many as he can. That evening when the man arrived, she invited my family over to watch him capture the bees, which was very educational. What my neighbor thought (the size of a football and weighed about three pounds) was a hive, wasn't, it was solid bees throughout, which were all stuck together. The man brought a bee box, snipped the branch they were on, and laid it on top of the box which had three traps of honey on it, and although it took two- and-one-half hours for all the bees to go in, there were only two or three bees left the next day. The man said bees that usually come and nest are only resting for the evening and will probably be gone by the next morning. These bees were Italian honeybees. Just a reminder - tell your children if they see a hive or swprming bees "Just leave them Aone." Because if you get the bees mad, they will attack and will really hurt the child. If you want to get rid of the bees (make sure they aren't wasps) notify this man immediately and I'm sure he'll be out to get rid of them for you. His name is David Jones and you can reach him at 338-6352 or 338-0234. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Happy Birthday to Theresa Kasper who recently celebrated her birthday on What One Person Can Do DR. WHITNEY SMITH. VEXILLOLOGIST What's - a vexillologist? A vexillologist is a flag historian - "vexillum" is the Latin word for "flag" - and Dr. Whitney Smith is the foremost authority on the banners under which men and women have lived and died throughout civilized history. The author of 11 books, the most recent being Flags Throughout * the Ages and Across the World, Dr. Smith is also director of the Flags Research center in Winchester, Ma. A flag, he points out, represents "what a group of people want to say, who they are and what they stand for." Responding to Bicentennial June 17. Many more happy birthdays to you, Theresa! interest in the American flag, Dr. Smith explains that Betsy Ross did not make the first American flag, which evolved slowly and was based on other existing flags. "She made flags but she didn't make the first flag." The traditional tale is "a story passed down through the family but it doesn't work out with the known facts of the time." 'Americans, he believes, "have taken their flag to heart and made it a part of their everyday lives and that is a healthy thing to do." Although he grants that some people may show poor taste in their use of the flag, Dr. Smith feels that "the flag is a symbol which belongs to all the people, not just to one group, and that means we are going to have to tolerate diversity." "To me." claims the world's V.A. NEWS EDITOR'S NOTE: Following are representative questions answered daily by VA con- selors.
