GREEN STREET (OFC. 8) 1925, for in that year the AFBF president called for a national Farm Bureau picnic because "just 150 years ago, in 1778, a group of American farmers gathered at Concord Bridge in Massachusetts for American Independence." President Oscar Bradfute of the AFBF proposed "an old- fashioned Fourth of July with a big chicken dinner, with flags, bands and speeches," He called for County Farm Bureaus to take part. Biggest of all was in Butler county, Kansas, where over 13,000 attended. Whether McHenry County Farm Bureau members took part will have to be determined by research or a talk with some old-timers, said Martin. McHenry County Farm Bureau was a growing organization in 1925. It was founded in 1912, the third County Farm Bureau formed in . the nation (with DeKalb and Kankaee the only ones to precede it). One of the most unusual picnics in 1925 took place in Cortland county, New York, where people saw a reenact- ment of the historic ride of Paul Revere and the assembly of f a r m e r - m i n u t e m e n a t Lexington and Concord. Said Martin, "The ob servation of thai-Secretary of Agriculture William Jardine helps summarise the role of farmers in the development of this nation. His comments help me issue an appropriate Fourth of July message to citizens today as we approach this Nation's 200th birthday." v Said, Jardine: "Our in dependence was won in large measure through the fighting, the sufferingand the heroism of farmers. - -*•*•*• "No body of men upholds the principles of liberty more strongly than do farmers. This is true not only in war but also in peace. Liberties must be defended, rights must be . maintained, at all times, and in this constant struggle the . fttrmer never fails to take an important part." ! MR. AND MR8.
