The McCullom Lake Boys Little league i> having a car wash on July 1®. The car wash will take place at the Arco gas station on the corner of Routes 120 and 31. The time will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The project is to help the boys buy new equipment and new uniforms for next year as theirs are quite old. < So, come on, folks, remember that all-important date, Saturday, July 10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The league would also like to remind the folks that the boys play ball on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. and they sure would like to see more parents as the attendance is very poor. The boys would play a lot better if they had someone out there to cheer for them. GIRLS SOFTBALL The Lakers of McCullom played a terrific game this last Wednesday, beating the '76ers by a score of 12 to 8. The score was 10 to 1 in the bottom of the first with the Lakers playing terrific ball but by the end of the game, the '76ers had picked up sufficient runs but were unable to bring in any in the last inning. Well, girls, you both played a fabulous game. The girls play ball on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and they would also like to see some of their folks out there to help cheer them on. VILLAGE MEETING The McCullom Lake village held their meeting on June 28 and the main topic was the upcoming Bicentennial which is to be held on August 8. There is to be quite a lot of fun planned for this occasion. We have several contests planned, ftiere will be an old fashioned swim suit contest and in­ formation may be obtained by calling the Glen Gates residence. Then there will be a poster contest. This is being handled by Sis Jordan at 385- 1335. There is no judge for the tepee contest. If anyone is interested in helping out, you are asked to call Alice Schroetfr' af 285-2S02 Also someone is needed to sell balloons in costume. Dave Hanson will be selling Bicen­ tennial tee shirts. BICENTENNIAL The village of McCullom Lake will hold their Bicen­ tennial on August 8. There lot of fun planned for everyone from the youngest to the oldest. To kick off the celebration, you will see George Washington crossing the Delaware, Abe Lincoln walking around talking to the people, fend watch your scalps, folks, there will be Indians scouting around the parkk Just kidding folks, these are friendly Indians. There will also be an Indian chief and his squaw, a fur trader and a village blacksmith. Elmer Thorpe will • have his Bicentennial theatre. The fun part is that there will be pioneer juice and McCullom dogs available all day. Also fun for the grownups and kids are horseshoes and a train ride. So don't forget the date, Aug. 8. Scott CONSERVATION CLUB The Conservation club meets every third Thursday of the month. Attendance is very poor from this side of the lake and would like to see more attending. The lake requires a lot of maintenance and upkeep. Everyone's help and suggestions help to make the job a lot easier. Try to at­ tend these meetings and find out what is being done for our lake. SURPRISE VISIT There was a surprise visitor at the home of of Kathy Regner a while back. .Her brother, Dennis Lawson who is in the Marines, dropped in after driving from Camp Lejeune, N.C. at 2 a.m. in the morning. Quite a surprise as he was not expected for some time. Dennis There are times when I feel that my continuing warnings to beware of fraud traps imply that there are few honest people left in the world. For­ tunately, this is not so. And it is because most of us tend to trust each other that many of us do, at one time or another, become victims of fi*aud. So follows the age-old dilemma; Do we respond to everyone as if he were "out to get us;" or do we trust everyone completely? s Neither. There is, however, a reasonably simple - but, un­ fortunately, general - rule of thumb to follow: In dealing with people you don't know well, or when spending or in­ vesting a hefty sum of money regardless of how well you know the person, exercise caution. If the person with whom you are dealing is honest, he or she will respect your caution-and will respect you more for exercising that caution. If the person is not honest, he or she usually will act slightly offended at your questions - thereby trying to stop those questions by making you feel guilty. The word "caution" must be defined more clearly. The dictionary uses such terms as "wariness" and "prudence." I would translate that to: 1. Ask questions 2. Don't rush or be rushed 3. Investigate. In order to ask questions, a person must know what questions to ask. Un- fortuantely, most .of us don't kriSw the intricacies of the financial world or its language - - just as we don't know the intricacies of the auto repair world or its language. If you don't know what questions to ask, find someone whom you trust who does know what questions to ask. It could mean > a difference as big as the amount of money you are spending. The same advice holds true with point number three: In­ vestigate. If someone offers to invest your savings for you, his or her smiling, "honest- looking" face and well dressed body is not a guarantee of honesty. It could be just the opposite. And in following the advice to investigate, point number two becomes important: don't rush or be rushed. If the salesman tries to pressure you into acting quickly, that usually is all the more reason for you to act slowly, to investigate. And if you don't know how to in­ vestigate the credibility of a businessperson, again, find someone whom you trust who does. And take your time. Be as sure as you possibly can be before signing a contract or paying money. Unfortunately, the apprehension and con­ viction of an unscrupulous businessperson does not guarantee the return of stolen monies. Many "crooks" don't hart «asets. I wish there were clear cut rules of thumb for distinguishing <jishonest people from honest people. But there are not. There are many shades of gray. That's why caution is the key: asking questions, not rushing or being rushed, and investigating. Trust people with whom you deal ; but trust that they will understand your exercise of caution.
